Des Moines Student Wins Drake Relays Half Marathon

Spectators watching the Drake Relays half marathon races Saturday morning were asking the same question. Just who was that masked man winning the race? Chris Bourke crossed the finish line and pulled a red and white hood off his head to reveal himself as the winner. Bourke, a Des Moines University podiatry student, earned the win in 1 hour, 10 minutes, 30 seconds.

Chris Bourke

Bourke ran the 13.1-mile race in a full body suit patterned after the American flag. He said he ran about 4 miles with the hood over his face. “I’ve wanted to run for the USA,” said Bourke, a former University of Delaware runner who is from the Philadelphia area. “The problem was the mask. It was steaming up and I had to keep taking it off (my head). This is not the best material to see through.”

PODIATRIST AND LIFESTYLE CHANGES

NY Podiatrist Maintains 218 Pound Weight Loss by Avoiding Temptation

Dr. Howard Dinowitz has learned to conquer temptations using a smart interference plan. When he comes eye to eye with a tasty goodie that pleads, “Eat me!” Howard thinks about how long it would take to chew it, taste it, and finish it. Then, he forces himself to wait that same amount of time to evaluate whether the treat is worth the calories.

Dr. Howard Dinowitz (Before and After)

Realizing that the sweet thrill would have long been over by that point makes it easier for him to say, “Forget about it!” instead of giving in. Howard says once you get the hang of this psychological technique, it becomes a great way to nip impulse eating in the bud. In fact, this very strategy helped Howard lose 218 pounds — and keep them off for good.

DIABETES NEWS

ADA & EASD Issue New Hyperglycemia Management Guidelines

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) have issued a joint position statement emphasizing patient-specific treatment of hyperglycemia in persons with type-2 diabetes. Key recommendations in the new ADA/EASD statement include the following:

  • Glycemic targets and treatments to lower glucose must be individualized according to specific patient characteristics.
  • The mainstay of any type-2 diabetes treatment program is still diet, exercise, and education.
  • Metformin is the preferred first-line drug, in the absence of contraindications.
  • Whenever possible, patients should participate in all treatment decisions, focusing on their preferences, needs, and values.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present excerpts from Meet the Masters.

Bret Ribotsky: What should podiatrists be doing to maximize their reimbursement while being highly ethical?

Dr. H. F. “Bunny” Brown, III

H.F. "Bunny" Brown : Number one, bill for what you do. Don’t try to overbill. I’ve seen doctors try to bill for 17 procedures when it is really just one procedure. Don’t try to cheat. You know, you’re going to get caught. It’s not worth it either. Number two is to document. Document everything you do.

Dr. Lisa Schoene

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week's guest is sports medicine specialist Dr. Lisa Schoene . You can register for future events by clicking here

QUERIES (EMR)

Query: Transmitting Schedule II-V Controlled Substances Electronically

I read in "AMA's Understanding the basics of Medicare's electronic prescribing program (updated 2/12") that effective June 01, 2010, we could transmit schedule II-V controlled substances electronically. We have not been able to do this using our Surescripts software with TRAKnet, and we have been told that this is not allowed. Does anyone have further information regarding this?

RE: Nerve Compression Vs. Fictitious Injury (Elliot Udell, DPM)
From: Peter J Bregman, DPM

Certainly, conservative therapy such as Dr. Udell suggests is a great idea, but if and when it fails, the sooner you decompress the affected nerves, the sooner the patient will get better. This is a local CRPS injury, which means a peripheral nerve is involved and needs to be repaired. I will not go into the neurochemistry here, but suffice it to say, a decompression can only help not hurt if done properly in the right hands. I suggest going to aens.us and find a surgeon near you who can treat this problem.

RE: 10% Health Professional Shortage Area Bonus
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM

Yesterday, I received a nice financial gift from CMS for attesting that my practice used a qualified "meaningful use" EHR software program in 2011. I wasn't expecting an $1,800 check. Since I practice in a rural area, I qualified for an HSPA (Health Professional Shortage Area) 10% bonus incentive on top of the $18,000 that the practice already received for Stage I use of the EHR in 2011.

It took some research, but according to advanceweb.com,"Bonus payments for EPs who practice predominantly in a geographic HPSA will be made as separate lump-sum payments no later than 120 days after the end of the calendar year for which the EP was eligible for the bonus payment."

RE: Sterilizing Bits Between Debridements (Alan Meyerberg, DPM)
From: Dan Michaels, DPM, MS

I still think no grinding, no whirlpools, and one should fully sterilize all instruments every time (prepare them as they would be prepared to go in the operating room). I was at a general surgeon's office and saw instruments unwrapped on the counter and some soaking in a stainless steel-covered container with gross liquid inside. This made me decide that if I ever needed surgery or a general surgeon, I would not go to him. We are doctors and not a nail salon, so we know better and should not touch a patient with anything but a sterile instument.

RE: The Passing of Virginia "Ginny" Jewell
From: Lynn Homisak, Estelle Albright, DPM

My deepest sympathies to both the personal and podiatric families of Ginny Jewell. I really only connected with her recently, but have long admired her devotion and dedication to podiatry (and especially Indiana) in the time and energy she so selflessly gave. May our memories and her everlasting peace be of comfort to all who will sorely miss her.

Lynn Homisak, Renton, WA

I am saddened to hear of Ginny's sudden passing. She was a sweet and kind person. She also was instrumental in managing the IPMA's annual meetings and administrative management at the IPMA. She was always helpful and always friendly. We will all miss her.

RE: The Passing of Lawrence Mandel, DPM
From: Bruce G Blank, DPM

I'm very saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Larry Mandel. He was one of my residency directors at The Kansas City Podiatric Residency Program. He was a great teacher in the operating room. His technique always appeared effortless and was always efficient. He, like so many of the attendings, was very confident while teaching the residents. We, in turn, were able to feel confident as he directed our technique through procedures. It was a great learning environment.

Larry was a very warm and kind man who gave to the profession not only as a residency director but as an examiner for the ABPS. He always treated the residents with respect and as colleagues. His kind demeanor will be greatly missed. He was taken from us at too young of an age. God bless his family and his memory.
