"With their degrees in hand, and about to head off for residency, these outstanding students are one step closer to being able to practice as podiatrists," SOPM Dean Javier La Fontaine, DPM said. After completing four years of training, graduates will move on to three years of residency before qualifying for licensure as podiatrists. Students were matched to residency programs this past March during SOPM Match Day.

NY Podiatrist Discusses GPS Tracking Shoes and Insoles
From a biomechanics and foot health perspective, tracking devices can be used safely when placed correctly and with a few key considerations in mind,” says Samantha Landau, DPM a podiatrist and assistant professor at New York College of Podiatric Medicine at Touro University. But to ensure that the tracking device doesn’t harm your foot, you should pay attention to the following: Placement: “The safest placement is beneath the insole, where it is cushioned and integrated into the shoe without disrupting the plantar surface,” says Dr. Landau.
|
|
Dr. Samantha Landau |
Material sensitivity: “Some individuals have nickel allergies, and because tracking devices may contain metallic components, prolonged exposure in a warm, enclosed environment like a shoe could contribute to skin irritation,” says Dr. Landau. Comfort: After you place the tracking device, re-assess the comfort of the shoe. “It should not feel tighter, uneven, or unstable,” says Landau. “If there is any discomfort, pressure, or change in gait, the device should be re-positioned.”

Study Reveals Diagnostic PsO and Eczema Disparities in UK Podiatry Education
A new mixed-methods study provides an important and timely examination of diagnostic disparities in dermatology education among other medical specialties. This research focused specifically on pre-registration UK podiatry students’ ability and confidence in identifying common inflammatory skin conditions across different skin tones. Conducted across universities in South-central England, the investigation highlights persistent gaps in training that may contribute to broader healthcare inequalities affecting patients with skin of color.
Using an explanatory sequential design, the study combined quantitative and qualitative methodologies. In the first phase, 33 final-year podiatry students completed a validated pictorial multiple-choice questionnaire featuring 6 clinical images of either eczema or psoriasis presented across three categories of skin tone based on the Fitzpatrick skin type scale. In the second phase, 22 participants engaged in focus groups to explore their diagnostic reasoning, confidence, and perceptions in greater depth.

8 red flags that signal your billing is leaving money on the table
From clean claim rates to contract negotiations, these warning signs could mean your practice is leaving thousands in revenue uncollected.
3. Your staff cannot explain why a claim was denied
If your billing team is resubmitting denied claims without fully understanding the denial reason, you are likely repeating the same mistakes. Every denial code has a root cause, and identifying it is the only way to prevent recurrence.

What Are Your Chances of an IRS Audit? 15 Audit Red Flags
These red flags could increase your chances of the IRS selecting your return for audit.
5D. American Opportunity Tax Credit
College is expensive, and the tax law gives individuals some tax breaks to help with the cost. One of these is the American Opportunity Tax Credit.
The AOTC is worth up to $2,500 per student for each of the first four years of college. It's based on 100% of the first $2,000 spent on qualifying college expenses and 25% of the next $2,000. And 40% of the credit is refundable, meaning you get it even if you don't owe any tax. This tax saver begins to phase out for joint-return filers with modified adjusted gross incomes above $160,000 ($80,000 for single filers). The student must be in school at least half-time. Eligible expenses include tuition, books and required fees, but not room and board.
Among the AOTC problem areas that the IRS focuses on:
-
Taking the credit for more than four years for the same student
-
Omitting the school's taxpayer ID number on Form 8863 (the document used to claim the AOTC)
-
Taking the credit without receiving Form 1098-T from the school, and
-
Claiming multiple tax breaks for the same college expenses.

RE: Podiatric Research
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
In 1992, before some of our current DPMs were born, I either got a phone call or ran inro Allen Jacobs, DPM. He said that he was looking over the table of contents of the most recent Journal of Foot Surgery the progenitor of JFAS. He said when he saw the word “Meta-Analysis" in the title of one of the articles, he was certain that I had written the article before confirming it by reading the name of the author. The article has been used in malpractice cases. When questioned by plaintiffs’ attorneys, I responded, “It says what it says.” When the defense attorneys ask questions, I suggest that in this case, the meta-analysis suggests that within certain parameters, the choice of first metatarsal osteotomies is the “surgeon’s choice.”
One can argue that, hopefully, this article saved money for fellow podiatrists. Consider the place a meta-analysis holds today in the hierarchy of evidence-based medicine. It is at the top or very near the top of the pyramid. To say research by podiatry schools, their faculty, and students is almost impossible because of the cost and lack of funding might not be totally correct.
Writing that meta-analysis article costs nothing, $0.00, Zip. The one student and I spent a lot of time reading the numerous articles, constructing inclusion and exclusion criteria, and performing the calculations to come up with no practical significance between a surgeon’s choice of metatarsal osteotomies. Other authors will tell you it takes time, a lot of time to get results, and it does. But industry doesn’t have to support the work with questionable funds.
Rod Tomczak, DPM, , MD, EdD, Columbus, OH

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS) | |
From: Lawrence Oloff, DPM
Drs. Gottlieb and Jacobs bring up interesting points. I think it is fair to label podiatry as a predominantly clinical care profession with some research. I would like to hear from others whether they agree. Part of the problem is that it is difficult to do “true research” outside of an academic center as Dr. Gottlieb points out. Some time ago, I was full-time faculty at a podiatry school. My recent job is full-time faculty in a medical school. This environment is completely different than the podiatry school environment. In the Orthopaedic Department there are research facilitators, statisticians, grant advisors, and many others that help to facilitate research. In addition, advancement is often based on contributing research. The podiatry school environment focuses on teaching, and advancement can occur without research.
As was also pointed out by Drs. Gottlieb and Jacobs, research funded by corporations may be fine but becomes suspect as...
