PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NY Podiatrist Encorages Patients to Walk Their Way to Good Health

Science backs this up: Two recent studies found that walking between 2,000 and 10,000 steps each day can reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, and decrease the likelihood of premature death by at least 10 percent. Other research has linked walking to mental (improved mood and self-esteem) and physical (better sleep and decreased disease risk) benefits.

Dr. Jacqueline Sutera

“I have patients that come in because they are either self-motivated or motivated by other doctors, such as cardiologists, to become active, and the first thing I advise them to do is get out and walk,” says podiatrist Jacqueline Sutera, DPM, owner of City Podiatry in New York City.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Stability Running Shoes Provide the Most Support: NY Podiatrist

In the market for a new pair of running sneakers? Don't just go buy the flashiest pair you can find. For the best experience, you might need a little more support. Stability running shoes may be your best bet. But first, understanding the use of stability running shoes requires a basic lesson on foot mechanics—and specifically the term pronation, i.e., “rolling in or inward tilting of the arch when the foot contacts the ground,” says Scott R. Lurie, DPM, founder of Park Avenue Podiatry Associates in New York City.

Dr. Scott Lurie

As Dr. Lurie explains, while every foot pronates to some degree upon contact with the ground, the bony structure of a particular foot will dictate the level to which the foot rolls inward. “In the worst case scenario, a ‘flat foot’ or pes planovalgus foot may be the end result of these pronatory forces requiring even greater stability and control,” he says. Shoe choices are critical for such a foot type, along with possible custom orthotic supports to be fabricated for additional control.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
NJ Doctor Pleads Guilty to Bilking Amtrak Out of $1.4M

A New Jersey doctor pleaded guilty to defrauding Amtrak of almost $1.4 million by submitting bills for procedures that were never provided or were medically unnecessary, prosecutors said. Dr. Muhammad Mirza and a group of conspirators charged Amtrak's health plan for the bogus treatments by recruiting employees of the rail service and paying them to use their patient and insurance information to submit fraudulent claims. In court documents, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Mirza conspired with podiatrist Michael Denicola and others to bribe Amtrak employees to use their information to submit false claims.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Four Common Pitfalls Your First Year in Practice

Congratulations for making it through medical school, and residency, and perhaps even a fellowship. Now — finally! — you’re ready for your first or second job. You may be clinically prepared, ready to see patients and begin procedures, but are you ready from a practice management perspective? There are four areas that trip up new doctors the most.

1. Contracts - Negotiate contracts, find out what you are worth, and know how to slow things down and advocate well for yourself. Understand expectations. Are you meant to be on call nights and weekends? To see patients 34 hours per week in the office? Are there certain productivity expectations? Do you have sufficient paid time off and reimbursement for continuing medical education? You need to fully understand what is expected and see whether it’s reasonable or something you must negotiate.

Your first job is unlikely to be your last, so find a way that you can exit the agreement within a certain notice period, like 90 days, without any strings attached. Then think about what will happen when you do leave. Is there a tail policy you have to pay? A penalty? A non-compete agreement? Think about all these factors before you sign.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) - PART 1
From: Ben Pearl, DPM

While the results of the survey are a little surprising, there is an inherent selection bias in that only runners that were not suffering with debilitating knee arthritis would be participating in the Chicago Marathon.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) - PART 2
From: Richard Jaffe, DPM

I have been watching the movement to MIS foot procedures for well over 40 years. I always hoped that I could rationalize the negatives and include the technique in my list of available procedures. Now that we have a serious study to help evaluate the efficacy of the technique, I am as steadfastly opposed to it as ever. Twice the complication rate? Twice the rate of a second surgical procedure? And for what? Has it eluded our practitioners that recovery from foot surgery takes much longer for bone than for soft tissue? Pain and swelling come from bone healing, and not much from skin. And the sum of 3 small incisions is almost as long as a scarf incision. So, what are the advantages of MIS?

In the early years, it took only a few minutes to perform the procedure. Indeed, I noticed the first comments made by orthopedists who tried it always...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS)
From: Robert Chelin, DPM

As podiatrists practicing in Ontario, Canada, we are unable to prescribe any opioids medications for our patients. Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise. In performing over thousands of bunion and other invasive foot surgeries for many years, I have been using Toradol (ketolorac) in managing post-op surgical pain in most of my patients with great success. Of course, there are those who cannot tolerate NSAID medications due to certain medical conditions and for those, we get the family physician involved in providing prescriptions for an opioid.
