PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Fitness, Not Rest May Be Key to Recovering From An Injury: DC Podiatrist

Aerobic exercise helps release human growth factor hormones that promote healing in the tendons and connective tissues, said Dr. Stephen Pribut, a DC podiatrist. Here are some ways to stay active when you're rehabbing an injury: First, do no harm. Talk with your doctor about which activities are safe, Pribut said. You want to get the benefits of aerobic exercise without aggravating your injury or creating a new one. Swimming and pool running, for instance, are typically safe with IT band syndrome, Achilles' strains, and stress fractures, as long as you're not pushing off the pool wall with the injured area, he said. Stationary bikes are often safe with shin splints, plantar fasciitis, and IT band syndrome, as long as you remain seated. But if you have Achilles' issues, cycling can make the issues worse.

Pribut recommended that those with stress fractures get extra calcium and vitamin D, plus plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to lower inflammation.

IL Podiatrist Has the Right Rx for a 3-Peat Basketball Championship

Sev Hrywnak, DPM, MD, owner of the Rochester RazorSharks has much to celebrate today as his team won the Premier Basketball League Championship beating the Michigan Admirals 93-92 to sweep the best of three game series 2-0. This year, the RazorSharks had to get by both Buffalo and New England in the early rounds of the playoffs to then face the Michigan Admirals in the league Championship Series.

Dr. Sev Hrywnak holds championship trophy

“Winning does not get old,” stated Hrywnak. “We are fortunate to have strong relationships with agents that send us the best players from across the U.S.  Many of the players we have on this championship team are recent cuts from the NBA who are looking to improve their skills with us and eventually crack an NBA roster.”

Choose Shoes Based on How Much Walking You Do: IL Podiatrist

Whether shoes are sexy or not, Dr. Dave Charnota, a podiatrist at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, IL, warns that safety and comfort should come first when choosing shoes for the day. High heels can also be dangerous, he adds.

Dr. Dave Charnota

"The change in gait and unnatural position of the foot in the shoes can provide instability in the ankle and mid-foot regions, leading to injuries such as sprains, strains, and fractures," says Dr. Charnota. He recommends that women choose their shoes for the day based on how much walking they will do.

FDA Advisory Committee Recommends Pre-market Approval of Synthetic Cartilage Implant for 1st MTP Joint

The Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee of the FDA recommended a synthetic cartilage implant should be given pre-market approval for the treatment of degenerative and post-traumatic arthritis in the first metatarsophalangeal joint.

The panel voted 10 to 2 that the synthetic cartilage implant Cartiva (Cartiva Inc.) is safe, voted 9 to 3 that the implant is effective, and voted 8 to 2 with 2 abstaining that the benefits of the implant outweigh its risks. The panel focused on results of the MOTION study, which showed that patients who received the synthetic cartilage implant in the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint experienced a high success rate while undergoing a shorter surgery, maintained motion in the MTP joint, and avoided risks of non-union and hardware fracture compared with patients who underwent fusion.

MEDICAL LICENSURE
OK Goes MOC-Free, Others May Follow

Oklahoma this month became the first state to enact a law aiming to remove maintenance of certification (MOC) as a requirement for physicians to obtain a license, get hired and paid, or secure hospital admitting privileges. Days before, Kentucky's governor signed a more limited measure that prohibits making MOC a condition of licensure.

Similar laws are brewing in other states as the widespread rebellion against MOC programs operating under the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) takes a more militant turn. Internists and internal medical subspecialists arguably have been the fiercest critics, protesting that the MOC program of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) wastes their time and money and does little to nothing to improve their patient-care abilities. The ABIM, in turn, says it's open to reform, but nevertheless wants to promote lifelong learning in its ranks.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Name Withheld

I’ve been reading the responses to this question and felt as a fairly new practitioner (on my 4th year of practice) that I should chime in. I feel that my answer not only addresses this question but also dives into a fairly recent debate on PM News about “where are the new graduates finding jobs.”

I think that starting salaries greatly depend on the type of practice this new graduate is joining. If the graduate is joining a solo or single specialty group practice they may not be able to absorb losses as well on the front end as say a hospital-employed position could. However, when I came out...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM

100K$ to 180K$? Where does Dr. Fellner get his data? I would hope that the APMA had this type of data. I don’t take home that much money and I did three years post-graduate studies (PSR24 and a fellowship) and have been in solo private practice for 27 years! There are some of us who are considering retirement and developing a plan to that end. We are not BAD people. We want our young associates to be successful.

There have always been those practitioners who try to take advantage of podiatrists right out of residency. Wake up Dr. Fellner - this is not a new dilemma. I will give you some advice that was given to me some 30 years ago by a doctor whom I have great respect for—(Bruce Dobbs, DPM). Don’t worry too much about...
