APMA STATE COMPONENT NEWS

IPMA Lobbies State Legislature

There are many issues facing Illinois podiatric physicians. Dr. Joseph Borreggine, President-Elect of the IPMA and his executive council colleagues recently attended the "Annual Illinois Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA) Lobby Day. Having the ability to speak directly to State of Illinois representatives allowed Borreggine and his fellow podiatrists to get their voices heard.

(L to R) Illinois State Senator Dale Righter, Drs. John Sigle, Joseph Borreggine (President-Elect IPMA), and Ada Paloucci (Treasurer IPMA))

"With the sweeping health care reform issues facing the State, any opportunity that we as a podiatric profession can do to be included in the process is vitally important to our future", said Borreggine. The IPMA looks to return next year to Springfield.

PODIATRIC STUDENT NEWS

TUSPM Student Had Run-Ins With Accused Craig's List Killer

The moment Morgan Houston saw hotel surveillance pictures of the "Craigslist Killer," she recognized her old college pal, Philip Markoff. The Temple University podiatry student had just gotten a call about Markoff's arrest and "started going into shock," she told the Daily News at her family's South Carolina vacation home.

Morgan Houston with Philip Markoff

Houston and Markoff had been friends since sophomore year, fellow members of a pre-med fraternity who ran with the same crowd. She'd had a few uncomfortable run-ins with him. He had pinned her against a wall one dark night to kiss her — and had to be pulled away. He made lewd comments about her body. And he showed up at a Halloween party dressed as a mammogram machine, offering free breast exams.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Add Clarity to Your Work Goals

What do you want to do or to gain? Success begins with clear goals. If, for example, your goal is to reduce the clutter that surrounds you at work, a poorly stated goal might be “I want to get organized.” That goal is too ambiguous. It does not state clearly what you want, when you want it or how you intend to gain it.

Better: “I want to set up a system to organize my files within two weeks. Then, I want to start filing the papers on my desktop within 24 hours of receiving them so that my desktop stays clear.” In that example, the following details improve your chances of succeeding at the goal.

  •  What: a clear desktop.
  •  When: within two weeks.
  •  How: by organizing a filing system and then filing all papers within 24 hours.

QUERIES - NON-CLINICAL

Query: Reporting Diabetic Shoe Dispensing Problem

Every spring and frequently throughout the year, for the last couple of years, I been having diabetic patients come to my office complaining about foot pain. Usually, it is a neuroma or a heel spur. These patients come in wearing diabetic shoes that have been made/dispensed at a local pharmacy. These patients may qualify for the Medicare Diabetic Shoe Program, but they are active people without significant foot deformities that would do much better in an athletic shoe.

My concern is these pharmacies. Are any other podiatrists  seeing a problem here? I saw two patients this week who both had shoes from the same pharmacy. Both patients are active and never should have been put in diabetic shoes. When this happens, should I be reporting this to someone?

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1

RE: Selling X-Ray Films (Mark Levine, DPM)
From: Jordan Sheff, DPM

Here's an answer to Dr. Levine who asked about someone who would buy his old x-rays for the silver in them. There is a company called B&B associates that will do this. Ask for Herman Fisher. (877) 486-3456. Just be sure to cut off the patient's name bar from the film so you don't have to worry about violating any HIPAA laws.

MICROMAT NAIL-DRILL SYSTEM
FOR PATIENT COMFORT

Med-Pro Corporation features the Micromat 3000 Nail Drill System for debriding patients' nails by using a controlled water and alcohol combination spray. The spray also keeps the dust away from the doctor and down on the patient's feet, to be wiped away with a piece of gauze. Patients will love this drill as the combination of water and alcohol reduces the friction heat, allowing the doctor to work more aggressively. The Micromat features include variable speed control, spray adjustment, forward and reverse and a foot control. The nail drill system is manufactured in Switzerland. Med-Pro Corp. includes a two-year warranty on both parts and labor and a 30-day, money-back guarantee. All service is performed by Med-Pro Corp in the USA. We have just introduced a new line of autoclavable burrs to be used with the Micromat. However, the Micromat will also accept most standard podiatry burrs. For further information, go onto our website at medprocorp.com or phone us at 800-633-7761.

RE: Employee Salaries (Tip Sullivan, DPM)
From: Jon Purdy, DPM

The fact that you have employees who are satisfied working for you and not receiving a raise in three years tells me you are doing something right already. Of course, you may not realize there is a swell of discontent, if that is in fact the case, but they are holding steady for the moment. Although working only four days a week may be a benefit for some, not getting maximum work week hours, or working a 10-hour day may not be for others.

My thoughts over the years have turned from pulsed incentives toward...
