DEA Publishes Requirements for MATE Act
The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) recently published the requirements for training for the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act. These requirements are tied to practitioners’ initial or renewal DEA registration starting June 27, 2023, and the only exception is a practitioner that is solely a veterinarian.
Under the MATE Act, practitioners must complete at least eight hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders, as well as the safe pharmacological management of dental pain. The training is a one-time training and the affirmation that the practitioner has completed the training will not be a part of future registration renewals after June 26, 2026, only the next scheduled DEA registration submission on or after June 27, 2023.

5 Steps to Start Your Own Independent Practice
The key to launching a successful independent practice is proper planning. Knowing what steps to take and what mistakes to avoid is critical to ensuring a sustainable, profitable practice. Follow these five steps to get started down the right path:
4. Develop a Project Plan - The single best way to make sure that you don’t miss a step in your planning is to acquire or develop a project plan. This plan should include a checklist of the items that need to be completed before practice launch as well as a list of ongoing tasks. Some examples of ongoing tasks include state and federal registrations, compliance, credentialing and contracting, marketing, hiring, and human resource management.
Don’t let the number and complexity of tasks scare you. You can successfully open your practice if you educate yourself on what needs to be done and then set timelines for each task’s completion.

I feel that Dr. Shamsi has misinterpreted my concept of a third board. The current issue facing graduates and those in practice is that insurance companies and hospitals are requiring board certification in order to practice. Many are unable, through practice experience (lack of diversified procedures), or allowing eligibility to expire. This was the purpose of the Summit last month. When I first started practicing, TUSPM class of 1988, all that was needed was passing the national boards and obtaining a state license in order to begin working as a podiatrist. Today, that is not the case.

Bilal Shamsi, DPM recently published a letter to PM News decrying the alleged "excessive number of podiatrists" graduating DPM schools. Medscape recently published a warning of the high number of physician retirements coming on board recently, which is expected to get much worse.
Of course, those described are MDs. Even in my community, I do not see a high number of podiatrists treating our expanding elderly population here in NV. I do see dentists on almost every block. There is nothing approaching...

When I graduated from OCPM in 1976 approximately 500 podiatrists graduated from all 5 schools that year. In 1974, there were 2,500 applicants to our 5 schools of podiatry. I understand less than 600 new podiatrists are licensed every year. I believe as a profession we are barely replacing ourselves. I believe we don't need three years of residency to provide the care that the average podiatrist provides even today. I know that some podiatrists perform total ankle procedures, and obviously a number of years of post-graduate training are necessary for that.
In Wyoming, there are about 15 podiatrists practicing and about 30 are licensed in the state. There are 550,000 people in Wyoming and most podiatrists there are quite busy. We need more emphasis on primary podiatric care and only a couple of years of post-graduate training. A young person entering MD or DO school who wants to perform sophisticated foot surgery would probably not be able to do this unless they were able to get into an orthopedic residency. We could not graduate from OCPM unless we assisted at delivering a baby. That part of my education and training I have really never used. Let's focus on podiatric medicine.
