NY Podiatrists Discuss Athlete’s Foot
“Athlete’s foot, also known as tinea pedis, is a fungal infection that affects the skin of the feet,” explains Mohammad Rimawi, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist in New York City. It’s not too difficult to tell if you have athlete’s foot — the symptoms are usually quite obvious. “Signs of athlete’s foot include scaling, dryness, blistering, redness, burning or stinging,” says Bruce Pinker, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon in New York. It often occurs on the bottom of the foot, especially on heels or between the toes. Some people may only experience a few of these things, while others may experience all the symptoms simultaneously. It’s also not unusual for symptoms to start fairly mild and then get worse as time goes on.

“Fungi are opportunistic organisms that take advantage of you at your weakest.” Dr. Pinker says that those who suffer from hyperhidrosis—meaning they sweat excessively—are also more likely to encounter athlete’s foot. If you tend to sweat, changing your shoes and socks regularly can help.” Beyond this, you’ll likely also need some sort of medication. Over-the-counter, topical creams work very well in most cases, adds Dr. Rimawi. If you have a bad case of athlete’s foot, you may need a doctor to prescribe you oral medication.

PODIATRISTS IN THE MEDIA |
FL Podiatrist Interviewed on Trinidad and Tobago Radio
Richard Mann, DPM of Boca Raton, Florida was recently interviewed on the Power 102 radio station from Trinidad and Tobago. The Topic was Diabetes and Amputations. The lower extremity amputation rate in the Caribbean is among the highest in the world and there is much interest in ways in which people can prevent lower extremity amputations, especially in diabetics.

Dr. Mann discussed strategies to prevent lower extremity amputations in diabetics including the use of nutrients to improve pedal sensation.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
Potential Lack of Support in Laceless Sneakers Worries Spanish Podiatists
Sneakers have long since conquered the street. They are no longer a garment reserved for sports but can be used in all types of situations and with the most varied garments. And all age groups wear them daily: from children to seniors. Within this boom, laceless sneakers are having a good time. Fashion experts assure that those who choose this footwear do so for a matter of comfort, and sociologists point to the search for efficiency in our daily lives, also when it comes to dressing. Podiatrists warn of the importance of the shoe supporting the foot and that you must choose the appropriate footwear for each activity.
|
Elena Carrascosa and Xavi Ruiz |
Elena Carrascosa, president of the general council of podiatry of Spain, believes that when wearing footwear, you should not only look at comfort. She believes that in some cases immediate comfort can lead to “neglecting” other important aspects such as arch support, stability and cushioning. Therefore, she recommends that the ideal is to find “balance” between comfort and support. Because this last aspect is what worries podiatrists the most. “If a shoe is loose, it can be the origin of deformities,” warns Xavi Ruiz, professor of podiatry at the University of Manresa.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
10 Suggestions to be an On-time Physician
Many of these ideas can easily be implemented in any office, with minimal or no expenses and without adding additional staff.
1. Develop a time management philosophy and make staff and patients aware of your desire to maximize your time during the office. It all starts with a commitment to being an on-time physician. The doctor must commit first to this concept and then obtain the commitment of the staff that being on time, becoming efficient, and being more productive are vital to the success of the practice.
You can’t have a staff trying to be on time if the doctor(s) don’t embrace the same philosophy. You may want to create this in writing and have everyone sign the commitment. This topic deserves frequent mention at staff meetings as a constant reminder of the importance of time management, which ensures that it is a goal vital to the practice’s success.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: The Future of Podiatry
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
A recent article published in KevinMD.com, written by a St. Louis plastic surgeon, Dr. Samer Cabbabe, caught my attention. I suggest that his discussion on the corporatization of medicine is thought-provoking. Many of his conclusions are, in my opinion, applicable to podiatry. Dr. Cabbabe concludes his article with certain recommendations for the future of quality medical care. I will paraphrase some of these with podiatry relevance and additionally share my personal opinions.
1. Curriculum changes are needed to focus on non-clinical aspects of medicine, including insurance, leadership, business, and other political aspects of medical care delivery. Medicine is a business, and practice survival as well as decision-making regarding employment require knowledge and good information. The business of medicine must be taken seriously by the...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 |
RE: The Future of Podiatry - Part 2
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
As we move forward (I should say you, as I'm on the 18th green and putting out), there must be a realistic examination of the future of medicine. As corporations and healthcare institutions continue to take over medical care, and insurers evaluate our care, the bottom line is cost-effectiveness. This is a major reason why NPs and PAs are replacing MDs and DOs as independent healthcare providers. This is a driving force for pharmacists beginning to provide healthcare. It is a driving force for urgent care centers replacing emergency departments, surgical centers providing services; we can site example after example.
Ultimately, insurance carriers want the least expensive medicine provided, whether it be testing, office fees, drug choice, or procedure selection. Industry, such as corporate-driven medicine, to the contrary, wants you for profit. You are evaluated by industry first and foremost by the profit you generate. The conflict between industry and...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY) |
I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Ronnie Lepow on his retirement. I had the honor and pleasure of serving on the APMA BOT with Dr Lepow. His leadership and dedication to our profession were outstanding. His devotion to bring our profession together and achieve equality with our MD and osteopathic colleagues has led to the success that our profession has obtained today.
Mazel tov, my good friend; enjoy many years in retirement!
