NY Podiatrist Runs His 10th and Final Boston Marathon
Robert Fried, DPM finished the Boston Marathon on Monday in 3 hours, 56 minutes and 13 seconds. It was not the time he had hoped for, but it was a kind of "closure," he said in a phone interview. Dr. Fried, 62, said Monday's race would be his final Boston Marathon but he plans to run his last marathon in Chicago later this year and continue with shorter races in the future. The retired podiatrist from Lake Success was one of about 100 Long Islanders who qualified for the Boston field this year.

Fried was a college kid at Adelphi University when he ran his first Boston Marathon in 1983, a sub-elite but strong 2 hours, 35 minutes. In this, Fried's 10th Boston Marathon run, 40 years after the first, he proved all too human: his quadriceps and calf muscles began to cramp 16 miles in it. When the cramps came, be considered dropping out. He reconsidered and is glad he did, "There was no way I was not going to finish."

FBI Uses Forensic IN Podiatrist to Help Solve Murder Mystery
Seven years ago today, mother of three, Terri "Missy" Bevers was murdered inside Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian. The country took notice of the case, given eerie surveillance footage showing a suspect clothed in black, body armor and other strange circumstances surrounding the brutal killing. The killer has an unusual gait, and detectives said they couldn't determine whether the suspect was a man or woman.

Later, the FBI called in forensic podiatrist Michael Nirenberg, DPM to study surveillance video of the suspect. Dr. Nirenberg said wearing the type of gear the killer was wearing and carrying a weapon would affect gait, so it's difficult to know if that's how the suspect moves in regular clothing. He said investigators on the case sent him recordings of people walking, to see if he thought they moved like the suspect. Nirenberg said just one of them had a gait similar to that of the suspect.

UK Podiatrist Awarded 3rd Place in Ultra-Marathon Post-Controversy
A top runner who was disqualified from an ultra-marathon after riding in a car for a portion of the race said she was ‘not thinking clearly’ when she accepted a third place medal. Joasia Zakrzewski finished third in the 2023 GB Ultras this month, but was accused of travelling two and a half miles of the route by car after concerns were raised about her Strava data.

The medal for the third-placed woman was instead awarded to NHS podiatrist Mel Sykes, who took to Twitter to slam her shamed rival as a "cheat"’, saying it was "great news for me but really bad news for sportsmanship." Answering questions about how her rival was caught, Sykes added: "Too many people noticed things were amiss and contacted the race organizers separately, so they had to launch an investigation."

5 Steps to Start Your Own Independent Practice
The key to launching a successful independent practice is proper planning. Knowing what steps to take and what mistakes to avoid is critical to ensuring a sustainable, profitable practice. Follow these five steps to get started down the right path:
3. Create Your Brand - The combination of your mission and your vision becomes your “brand” of medicine. The culture and environment that you are creating influences how you market to your targeted patient population.
Invest the time and money up front to develop a memorable name, a strong logo, and a mission statement that communicates to potential patients what your practice is all about. And remember that rebranding costs significantly more than branding, so it’s best to take a “measure twice, cut once” approach for marketing materials.

Query: Not The Average Neuroma Surgery
When I perform surgery on a Morton’s neuroma, I not only resect the neuroma, but under loupe magnification I bury the resected end of the nerve into the adjacent intrinsic musculature of the foot. I generally code this as:
CPT 64784 Excision of neuroma; major peripheral nerve, except sciatic
CPT 64787 Implantation of nerve end into bone or muscle (List separately in addition to neuroma excision)
Any thoughts or comments on this combination?

Response: I think that the use of both of these CPT codes together would be appropriate if the neuroma that was excised from the foot was not a Morton’s neuroma, but a neuroma that was afflicting a major peripheral nerve. The correct CPT code to use for the excision of a Morton’s neuroma is CPT 28080 which is defined specifically as the following: Excision, interdigital (Morton) neuroma, single, each.
As far as the use/billing of CPT 64787 in conjunction with CPT 28080, despite the fact that these two CPT codes are not bundled within the NCCI edits, it would not be appropriate to do so. When the CPT manual is accessed, it clearly states that CPT 64787 can be used in conjunction with CPT codes 64774 – 64786. Period.

A third board is not a good idea and will just create more confusion, as well as do nothing to move the needle. How about if the profession’s leadership, including retired cheerleaders, address the elephant in the room? There is widespread market saturation...which is why enrollment has tanked. I recently attended a dinner where there was concern posed by state leadership that two podiatry schools may close - my thoughts are good riddance. We should close weak programs as well. There is a disconnect or willful ignorance among podiatrists who graduated 25 years ago, and what tuition and loan burden is now, along with an abysmal job market and starting pay.
Has anyone visited a jobs board recently? We are graduating more than what this profession needs or the market desires. Young folks aren’t spending 7 possibly 8 years of their life in post-grad education to be offered the glorious opportunity to work for (Insert Mobile Podiatry Incorporated). Thank God for the Internet...sunlight is the best disinfectant.
The APMA's and ACFAS’s dreams of “attracting higher quality candidates" has been a wash, and it’s precisely because we have more practicing podiatrists than there are practicing orthopedists across all disciplines. But sure - Let’s create a third board.
