Aetrex Worldwide Named “Company of the Year” by APMSA

The American Podiatric Medical Students' Association has proudly announced that Aetrex Worldwide has been named as its “Company of the Year” for their support of the APMSA, including the redesign of the APMSA Website.

The award will be presented in Philadelphia, at the National Scientific Meeting of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) in August during the APMSA House of Delegates and will be announced in various podiatry publications. “We are very excited to receive this honor,” says Aetrex Regional Manager Barbara Mauss. “It was our pleasure to work with the APMSA to help others propel their careers in podiatry through the redesign of the Website.”

APMA NEWS

Free APMA Membership for First-Year Postgrads to Start in June

On June 1, APMA will launch a three-year membership recruitment pilot program that will provide free national APMA membership to DPMs in their first year of postgraduate training.

Though a component society fee may still apply, Resolution 17-07 was adopted at the APMA 87th House of Delegates meeting, encouraging all components to waive their state and local dues (if any) to those in their first year of training during this pilot program. The goal is to make membership for the first-year postgraduate completely free.

This program should make the grassroots recruitment efforts of the component societies to recent graduates much easier. For more information about the program, please contact Membership Services at 1-800-ASK-APMA.

Medicaid Facing Quality, Access Woes: Report

More than four decades after its inception, the federal-state Medicaid program is rife with poor quality of care, limited patient access and paltry reimbursement rates, according to a new report by the consumer-advocacy group Public Citizen. The study of all 50 states and the District of Columbia showed that the Medicaid program, which covers about 55 million mostly poor Americans, has failed to deliver adequate services to millions of individuals because of a wide-variance in eligibility requirements and other adverse factors.

The study ranked state-operated Medicaid programs on eligibility, scope of services, quality of care and provider reimbursement, using data from 2004 and 2005. Annette Ramirez de Arellano, a public-health expert also with Public Citizen, said that states earned the lowest scores in the category that measures quality of care. She also said that on average, states with higher median incomes scored better than those at the lower end of the spectrum, meaning that states with the neediest Medicaid enrollees often got the lower-quality services.

Programs were graded on a scale of one to 1,000, but half of all states have scores lower than 500, she said, adding that “No one state Medicaid program can be considered excellent among all categories.” Mississippi, Idaho and Texas scored as the bottom three, respectively, while Massachusetts, Nebraska and Vermont were the top three, respectively.

Large Clinics can Increase Revenue with a Centralized Appointment Desk

First impressions are important! New patients can be lost on their initial contact. The staff may be with a patient, at lunch, out sick, or on vacation and not answer the phone. They may be answering for another location that they don’t know very well. A disappointed, potential new patient who calls a different clinic is lost for life.

A better approach is for all appointment-related calls to go to a centralized staff that is knowledgeable about all of the doctors and locations in the practice. The US-based, friendly, professional operators at the Appointment Desk Company remotely schedule appointments for podiatrists and other doctors across the US . For larger clinics, we use the clinic’s scheduling system to schedule the appointments. Visit us at www.appointmentdesk.us or call 888.244.5150 for details or a quote.

Physician Trading Cards Help Patients Connect With Caregivers

Honus Wagner's 1909 baseball card sold for $2.35 million earlier this year, so how much would the card of cardiologist Roddy Canosa, DO, fetch? Not much, he admits.

But that hasn't stopped patients from keeping Dr. Canosa's photo card when he sees them at Ephrata (PA) Community Hospital. He's one of dozens of physicians featured in doctor cards at the hospital. The facility hands out the images to new patients to help them identify doctors, physician assistants and other healthcare professionals who come to their bedside. Doctors and patients liken them to baseball cards, but these are about connecting with patients, not home runs and batting average.

QUERIES

Query: Psoriasiform Dermatitis?

This is a 40y/o diabetic B F sent to me by a local dermatologist. Duration about one year. Isolated to L foot only. Mildly pruritic. FH is non-contributory. The dermatologist’s treatment has been topical Loprox and a short course of oral steroids. A biopsy revealed a psoriasiform spongiotic dermatitis—eczemous type of tissue reaction. No fungi were seen with PASD stain.

Psoriasiform Dermatitis?

The most successful treatment, to date, has been a short course of steroids(dosepak) with additional use of a fluorinated steroid ointment under occlusion. This just condition “keeps coming back” and breaks through with only topical steroids. Does anybody have any quips or pearls that might help me keep this patient off long-term steroids?

RESPONSES / COMMENTS

RE: Lawrence Harkless, DPM Retires from UTHSCSA
From: Neil A. Burell, DPM, Al Kline, DPM

In my opinion, Dr. Harkless is one heck of a podiatric medicine leader and will continue to promote podiatry wherever he goes. I thank God everyday for bringing Dr. Harkless into my life. I wish him only the best. God bless Dr. Harkless.

Neil A Burrell, DPM, Beaumont, TX, nburrell@gt.rr.com

I was so happy to hear from a reliable source at the UTSA podiatry program that Dr. Harkless was going to head a new podiatry school in Northern California. I was equally happy to hear that this new podiatry school would become part of an interdisciplinary academic program including medical and osteopathic medicine.

What will be the legacy that Dr. Harkless will leave the next generation of podiatrists graduating from our schools? Dr. Harkless is a role model for all of us in an attempt to “better” our profession. His determination to integrate podiatry into the mainstream of medicine & surgery by research, teaching and lecturing is a refreshing reminder that we can all take a lesson from his lead. Podiatry, as a whole, need more driven individuals to participate in bringing podiatry to the forefront of foot & ankle orthopaedics where we truly represent the “foot and ankle specialist.”

Until now, orthopaedic journals continue to produce many quality articles and studies that rival our own. As an extern through his program, many years ago, I still remember how he tried to instill these attributes in his students; to give something back to our profession; to do more than just get comfortable in our own, day-to-day, practice. His example should inspire all of us to dig deep in our souls and give something back to this wonderful profession. This may well be the legacy that Dr. Harkless will leave this podiatry generation and the next.

Al Kline, DPM, Publisher, Podiatry Internet Journal, al@kline.net

RE: Peppering of the Plantar Fascia

If I remember correctly, the original article about drill holes in the calcaneus was out of Egypt in the late 70's. I remember Guido LaPorta, DPM advocated this procedure. It was fairly successful. The prevalent theory was that it caused a micro-fracturing of the calcaneus, loosening the fascia.
