PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
WI Podiatrist Warns of the Dangers of Going Barefoot

As the weather starts to heat up, many will begin replacing their winter boots with sandals, flip-flops, or no shoes at all. As tempting as it may be to feel the earth beneath your feet, doing so can expose them to harmful risks. “Although it may be a very common summertime habit, going barefoot can leave your feet exposed and vulnerable. Walking barefoot on hot surfaces such as blacktop or cement can burn the bottoms of your feet in addition to the possibility of stepping on rocks, glass, or other sharp objects that could penetrate the skin and cause an infection,” said Thomas Landretti, DPM.

Dr. Thomas Landretti

Apart from potential cuts and burns, walking barefoot also exposes feet to bacterial and fungal organisms that can infect the skin and nails, leading to a change in appearance, odor, and comfort. “Public showers can contain contagious bacteria and fungus that can lead to health issues including athlete’s foot and ringworm,” said Dr. Landretti. “Wearing shower shoes in high traffic areas is the best way to prevent the spread.”

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 2
April is National Foot Health Month: CA Podiatrist

"April is National Foot Health Month, and I’m glad it exists, because people neglect their feet all too often, despite how important they are. Keeping our feet in good shape helps us stay active and moving properly, which contributes to good health overall," says Adelina Stateva, DPM.

Dr. Adelina Stateva

"It’s hard to move well if your feet aren’t up to the task. Once you lose your mobility, other health problems start to pop up, beginning a domino effect of issues that affect your wellbeing. The sooner you learn how to keep your feet healthy, the better off you’ll be–now and for the rest of your life. Approximately 20 percent of Americans experience at least one foot problem every year, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). When you think about how hard our feet work, that number makes sense.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
Bermuda Podiatrist Opens Atlantic Podiatry

Podiatrist Matt Francis has opened a new clinic with a particular focus on the feet of diabetic patients. After working in the industry for more than a decade, Francis went out on his own to open Atlantic Podiatry last month in Hamilton.

Matt Francis

“Doctors will often recommend regular diabetic foot checks,” Francis said. “We do diabetic screenings. We check your blood flow, pulses, and I write a report and send it to your doctor. We work with the Bermuda Diabetes Centre and the diabetic clinic — the Dream Centre at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. Our job is to maintain the feet and catch these issues before they become serious.”

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
MO Podiatrist Discussses Best Shoes for Walking on Concrete

Whether for work or leisure, if you spend long hours walking on hard surfaces, you know it takes a good pair of shoes to keep your feet comfy. And, the best shoes for walking on concrete “combine arch support and shock absorption for maximum comfort,” according to Timothy Oldani, DPM, a podiatrist at Missouri Foot and Ankle. Additionally, Dr. Oldani suggests looking for outsoles made of “tougher materials that can withstand the abrasive nature of concrete” and provide enough traction.

Dr. Timothy Oldani

“Concrete is particularly hard and unyielding compared to other surfaces,” Oldani explains, so it’s especially important to choose a pair of shoes with cushioning and support for your feet. When shopping, look for shoes with cushioned insoles and shock-absorbing midsoles to help reduce the impact of each step. Oldani notes that having ample arch support is one of the most important features in an insole, and some even have plush memory foam for extra comfort.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
OK Podiatrist Agrees to Pay $7M to Resolve False Claims Act Allegations

The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma announced that podiatrist Dr. Bryan Andrew Blanck has agreed to pay $7 million to the U.S. to resolve allegations that he violated the False Claims Act. Blanck formerly owned and operated the Valley View Foot and Ankle Center in Ada, OK. This settlement resolves allegations that Blanck submitted false claims to the VA Choice Patient-Centered Community Care programs for excessive medical services and for higher levels of service than what was medically reasonable or necessary for veterans receiving bioengineered skin substitutes and skin substitute-related treatment.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Steps to Start Your Own Independent Practice

The key to launching a successful independent practice is proper planning. Knowing what steps to take and what mistakes to avoid is critical to ensuring a sustainable, profitable practice. Follow these five steps to get started down the right path:

1. Establish Your Motivation and Vision - want to work as a solo provider. Is there a financial reason? A desire for better work-life balance? Or do you wish to treat a different type of patient care, perhaps with a more personalized touch?

An appreciation of your motivations will help define your mission, which sets the framework for the kind of practice you will build and map out the steps to launch it. Even more importantly, your mission will serve as a grounding point, an ideal upon which you can continually reference to measure whether your practice is fulfilling its purpose.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

Dr. Rosenblatt - first and foremost, I am happy to hear you didn’t need the operation and are doing well. Orthopedists are human, like everyone else. Some will share and some won’t. Podiatrists are the same way.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW)
From: Bret Ribotsky, DPM

Once again, it comes as an absolute shock to me from the conscious side of my brain that many podiatrists who hold leadership positions are so blatantly unaware or intentionally committing acts that will place them in jail, tarnish their reputation, and reflect badly on our profession. When I first read the story about Brian Carpenter, in 2019, I was cheering for his acquittal. But obviously the wheels of justice took four years, and he was found guilty.

As Brian is a past board member of ACFAS and a leader on the lecture circuit in our profession, Brian knew better. This must be a huge gut-check to every seminar that has had him as a speaker. As I shared on this forum a few months ago, there continues to be podiatrists lecturing at CPME-approved events who don’t have licenses (and the audience is not told). I can’t believe that nobody is concerned about this. Where did integrity go?
