PODIATRIST IN THE MEDIA
MA Podiatrist Provides Children’s Shoe Buying Advice

Louis J. DeCaro, DPM, president of the American College of Foot & Ankle Pediatrics appeared on NBC-TV April 17th to give tips to parents on picking out the right shoes for the right sports. Dr. DeCaro also spoke about the most common sports injuries in the pediatric population and how to prevent them.

Dr. Louis DeCaro

According to Dr. DeCaro, “Heel pain and shin splints are two very common painful conditions in pediatric athletes. Over-activity or growth is typically blamed; however the real cause is the biomechanics and foot type of the child and the repeated forces it poses on those structures. Screening your kids biomechanically is essential to prevention and treatment.” DeCaro talked about how critical it is to look at foot motion when repeated ankle injuries happen. “The foot controls the ankle. Control the foot, control the ankle."

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
OR Podiatrist Discusses Basics of a Good Running Shoe

"Whether you rarely jog, run a couple of days each week or regularly race competitively on pavement or trails, a key to enjoying – and enduring – the sport is establishing and maintaining foot health practices, which include periodic shoe-fitting and proper selection. As a podiatrist and avid runner, I’m very aware of the importance of this often overlooked aspect of the sport and its role in helping people enjoy and benefit from it long-term," says podiatrist Jeffrey R. Pentek, DPM

Dr. Jeffrey Pentek

"Although it’s not rocket science, there are a few important things to look for when selecting a good pair of supportive running shoes. They include: When you bend a running shoe from front to back, it should only bend at the ball of the foot. The midfoot and hindfoot should be firm. Heel counters on the back of running shoes should also be firm to prevent ankles from rolling in or out. And twisting running shoes with your hands should not allow for a lot of bending. You do not want very flexible shoes since this tends to put greater stress on feet," says Dr. Pentek.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
TN Podiatrist Charged in Major Opioid Investigation

A major regional drug round-up involving medical professionals resulted in dozens of federal indictments across multiple states, including nine from Middle Tennessee, officials said Wednesday.  Dr. Timothy Abbott, 62, of Nashville, a podiatrist, was indicted on seven counts of prescribing a Schedule II controlled substance outside the usual course of professional practice and without a legitimate medical purpose, between January 2015 and January 2019.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
How to Protect your Reputation Against Defamatory Online Reviews - Part 8

8. Take Action - Some proactive healthcare practices have begun fighting back against defamatory online reviews. Although many such cases settle outside of court, providers have been increasingly seeking court intervention where the damages are significant or when the reviewers will not cooperate.

For example, in a recent case in Arizona, two doctors successfully sued a patient who used her own website and other online review sites to post negative claims about her surgeries and other procedures. The jury awarded the doctors $12 million before the parties reached an agreement to resolve the matter.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)

Query: Reason to Maintain License?

Is there any reason to maintain a license to practice if a podiatrist has sold his/her practice and: A) is not going to make enough money in side practice activities (assisted living patients, locum tenens, etc.) to pay for the license and malpractice, or B) is not planning on using the license even for activities like volunteer work. I have talked to 3 different podiatrists that are inactive in any type of practice who are maintaining their license and getting required CME "just in case". What is the consensus among other soon to be, or already retired podiatrists?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
RE: Podiatrists and Humanitarian Efforts
From: Alan Sherman, DPM

Issue #6,399 of PM News features news pieces about tremendous podiatric support at the recent Boston Marathon as well as a reoccurring podiatric surgical mission to Nicaragua. I commend all of the dedicated podiatrists who donated their time and skills to these excellent efforts. Selfless outreach efforts like these boast podiatric public relations enormously. I wonder if the APMA or the state podiatric medical associations are doing press releases about these events to get placement of this news in media outside of podiatry? This type of feel good news is highly sought after by mainstream media.
