PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
IA Podiatrists Use Heavy-duty Suture to Treat Chronic Ankle Instability

Drs. Valerie Tallerico and Kosta Antonopoulos (husband and wife team) perform two types of ligament repair: primary, which brings the patient's own ligaments together; or secondary, which recreates the patient's ligaments. Antonopoulos said the secondary technique, also know as InternalBrace, uses FiberTape, a high-strength suture. He said this type of repair is the most common.

Drs. Valerie Tallerico and Kosta Antonopoulos

During surgery, Tallerico and Antonopoulos first use a small camera, or arthroscope, to look inside the ankle joint. The arthroscope is inserted into the ankle through two small incisions. "We use a heavy-duty suture that's non-absorbable," Tallerico said. "We do use little absorbable bone anchors, so basically we're recreating where that ligament is between those two bones."

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 2
Injuries Can Forecast the Weather: IN Podiatrist

Dr. Kenneth Oglesby, a podiatrist for IU Health Southern Indiana Physicians in Bloomington, said that although some people don’t believe it, studies have shown that increased pain from a former injury can correlate with a change in temperature, barometric pressure or precipitation, especially in arthritic patients. And sunny weather without precipitation is when rheumatoid arthritis patients tend to be most comfortable, he said.

Dr. Kenneth Oglesby

Oglesby’s patients often describe the site of the former injury (such as a broken bone or tendon injury) or surgery as feeling a little tight and achy for a short period. “It could be related to atmospheric pressure causing fluid levels to change within the joints,” he said, although other factors could be at play. Rain and prolonged cold weather can give people a gloomy outlook, for example, causing them to be depressed and inactive.

PODIATRISTS IN SPORTS
IN Podiatrist Runs "Only" 50 Miles After Re-Injuring Himself

The Denton trio from Newburgh, Indiana totally dominated the results in the Locomotion 12 endurance run at Camp Jordan Park Saturday. Jared Denton, a 37-year-old who graduated from law school last fall, was the overall winner in the 12-hour group as he covered the flat two-mile loop some 33 times for a total of 66 miles in 11 hours, 28 minutes and 47 seconds. Jared’s twin brother Dr. Jason Denton had to back down after the first 40 miles after re-injuring himself and ended up taking fifteenth overall by covering 50 miles in 8:44:26. Jason’s wife Kristy was the women’s overall winner as she covered 58 miles in 11:41:10 to take eighth overall.
Dr. Jason Denton

“I did 50 miles today, but I re-injured my leg and decided to cut it short.  I’d like to think I could have done more as I was hoping to get at least 64 miles, but heat was the biggest factor I dealt with today. “Hopefully, since I’ve had plenty of time to rest, I’ll be rested enough to drive us home tonight,” the podiatrist expressed.

MEETING NEWS
AZ Podiatrist and Team Win Top Research Award at Wound Healing Meeting

The Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) at the University of Arizona College of Medicine took the top abstract poster award at the Symposium for the Advancement of Wound Care (SAWC) held at the San Diego Convention Center this past week. The cutting-edge work, which involves a new optics technology called Spatial Frequency Domain Imaging (SFDI), allows clinicians to quantitatively image and assess foot circulation in patients at high risk for ulcers. “This technology gives additional insight into tissue vascular health so clinicians can improve the lives of patients”, noted Amaan Mazhar, PhD, VP of Research and Development at Irvine start-up Modulated Imaging.

Dr. David Armstrong

Celebrating its 30th year, SAWC hosts more than 3,000 delegates and others each spring. Drs. Mazhur and David G. Armstrong co-authored the study with UA vascular surgery resident Craig Weinkauf, Kairavi Vaishnav of SALSA and David J. Cuccia of Modulated imaging. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

6. Testimonials: Positive reviews and testimonials are something you should always be collecting from your patients. Everyone loves a good success story. Using video patient testimonials can add a strong sense of authenticity that written testimonials can't match.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Penalties for Using CR vs DR X-Ray Systems

Is there a penalty in 2017 for using a CR rather than a DR x-ray system? I was led to believe that there would be a downward payment adjustment for not upgrading our old ScanX to a direct digital system.

Wendy Siegel, DPM, Smithtown, NY

Response: Medicare/CMS as of January 1, 2017 began reducing payments to providers submitting claims for analog x-ray studies by 20%. The reduction is deducted from the “Technical Component” of the x-ray service.

Starting in 2018, payments for x-ray studies performed using computed radiography (CR) equipment will be reduced by 7% for the next five years and 10% after that. The goal is for all x-ray studies to be performed using digital radiography (DR).

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Lynn Homisak

I believe you are asking ‘should you bill a new patient you haven’t even seen yet?’ and ‘should you collect their credit card information prior to their appointment?' Instead of applying a Band-aid on an obvious problem and sending a negative message to patients before you even meet them, why not try to determine the reason WHY new patient cancellations are such an issue for you?

Yes, new patients must occasionally cancel an appointment. It happens. It is not typical, however, to have a new patient cancellation "problem"; unless of course, new patients are scheduled so far out that...

We e-prescribe and give each patient a written script also. This gives them a shopping choice and eliminates the weekend calls when the pharmacy cannot find the prescription!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: Joel Lang, DPM

In the last PM News retirement plan survey, I noted that about 11% of podiatrists have no retirement plan. That is really bad – and it’s all in the “thinking”.

I suspect the majority of those 11% are new practitioners who either think they can’t afford to put money away at this time because of their low income and high student loans, or those who are short-sighted and think that the need for retirement funds 30-40 years down the road is not...
