NC Podiatrist Provides Spring Foot Health Tips
April is foot health awareness month, and there are several things you can do to keep your feet healthy and happy says Michael Price, DPM, a podiatrist at Triad Foot and Ankle Center in Greensboro and a member of Cone Health Medical Group. Check your feet each day, especially if you’re diabetic. Those with the disease can develop calluses that predispose them to sores. Additionally, some diabetics don’t have a lot of feeling in their feet, so they can see problems but not feel them.

During the spring and summer months, check your feet for athlete’s foot. To prevent it, don’t walk around the pool or gym without shoes. It’s important to keep your feet moisturized both in the morning and at night. Use lotion on the tops and bottoms of your feet, but not in between toes, as they stay naturally moisturized," says Dr. Price.

NY Podiatrist Presents Grand Rounds at MI Hospital

Drs. Robert Conenello (3rd from left) and Andrew Cohen (with ball) |
Robert Conenello, DPM presented a Grand Rounds to the medical staff at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital, in Saginaw, Michigan. Residency director, Andrew Cohen, DPM arranged the talk as he hoped that Dr. Conenello’s story of dealing with stage IV throat cancer would inspire the attendees to persevere against adversity, advocate for themselves and their patients, and utilize others in problem solving. Participants also learned strategies in dealing with conflict and improving patient relationships.

Exercises are Key to Maintaining Foot & Ankle Strength and ROM: PA Podiatrist
Headed for a workout? Don’t forget your feet and ankles. When it comes to exercising, these body parts are often overlooked. Feet and ankles are crucial for stretching and mobility, said Joshua L. Moore, DPM, associate professor in the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. “Many people neglect the feet and lower extremity with stretching exercises and mobility exercises, which ultimately may lead to pain, inflammation, and injuries,” Moore said.

Dr. Joshua Moore |
Ignoring feet and ankles can also result in decreased or limited performance when exercising other regions of the body, he said. The “strength” of the foot involves the tendons that make up the foot and ankle. “These structures need to be intact to maintain the foot’s arch, normal function, range of motion and strength in performing exercise, walking and running,” Dr. Moore said.

Many Women Wear the Wrong Type of Shoe: MA Podiatrist
Dr. Cynthia M. Galavotti has her Soffts, Borns, and Clarks, and frequently advises her patients as a physician who treats the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg, “It’s best to avoid shoes that have no support at all.” This means slipping instead into properly fitting shoes with an arch and some cushion for the ball of the foot. “Women come in because they are on their feet all day and they are wearing the wrong type of shoe for them in my opinion,” said Galavotti, a podiatrist and an associate of Dr. Christopher H. Peteros at New England Foot Specialists in Longmeadow.

A registered nurse earlier in her career, Galavotti became interested in podiatry while working in orthopedics at Massachusetts General Hospital. She returned to school, graduating in 1993 from the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
How to Protect your Reputation Against Defamatory Online Reviews - Part 6
Doctors, dentists, psychologists, clinical laboratories, and other medical providers have a right to defend their reputations and livelihoods against reviewers who spread false and damaging claims. Fortunately, there are a variety of legal options available to combat defamatory online reviews.
6. Determine if a legal claim is viable. If you believe that the review is indeed defamatory, ask your lawyer about whether you have a viable legal claim. When determining whether to pursue legal action, keep in mind that:
-
If a review is posted anonymously, you may be able to obtain a court order compelling the Internet service provider to disclose the identity of the wrongdoer so that he or she may be taken to court.
-
To prevail in court, you will need to prove that the statements in question are false. There are many different ways of establishing the falsity of the reviewer’s claims, including through the testimony of witnesses (such as office personnel), records, or other evidence.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Michael Cassano, DPM
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Dr. Michael Cassano. Mike passed away on April 12th after a long and valiant battle with throat cancer. Mike was a 1984 graduate of NYCPM and longtime member of the Nassau County Podiatric Medical Association.
|
Dr. Michael Cassano |
Mike, along with his wife Dr. Maryann Alongi, also a Nassau Division member, was a regular attendee at our division meetings and special events always supporting the division activities. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Cassano Family at this most difficult time.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Switching to VOIP
We use cable for our phone service provider which is bundled with Internet. Our office has had problems for about a year with dropped calls, both incoming and outgoing. All of these problems appear to be along the phone lines that the buildings share and are not internal phone line problems. I am thinking of making a switch to VOIP. Does anyone have experiences to share with this type of service?
John Scholl, DPM, Lady Lake, FL

QUERIES (DME) |
Query: Lapse in DMERC Certification Due to Inactivity
I have been a participating doctor in the DMERC program through Palmetto for many years. I have had no issues with them, and never submitted many claims. I paid my multi-year re-application fee in January of 2018. Today, I received a notice stating I have "not billed out within the past four consecutive quarters" and I have been, effective immediately, de-activated from my billing privileges! Naturally, I must accept responsibility for perhaps not knowing this nuance, BUT....really! Now I must go through the whole process of submitting the CMS 855s form again in its entirety, which has always been characteristically a real joy to do. Is this common? Has this de-activation from CMS been out there and do many not know of this requirement?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) |
From: Vincent Marino, DPM
I respectfully disagree with Dr. Warshaw’s post. If one reads the terms of coverage, it says it is covered in a setting “requiring anesthesia other than local”. So unless a practitioner is utilizing conscious sedation in their office, ECSWT would not be covered by Medicare, making it a CASH procedure at whatever value you charge. Be sure to do an ABN though.
Vincent Marino, DPM, San Francisco, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) |
From: Ernest L Isaacson, DPM
In response to Dr. Gregory, yes, agreed that should have read “low” as most commercial airliners are pressurized to the equivalent of 8,000 feet not ground level; however, to be fair, the pressure is high relative to the air outside of the airplane.
And with all due respect to Dr. Werter, I did indeed emphasize the risk of DVT formation to the reporter, but like most articles, sound bites about fat legs are more compelling than life-threatening blood clots, and that was somehow lost in transmission.
Thank you both for your astute observations and comments on the article; it’s another testament to the virtual sense of community that has been so diligently and passionately cultivated by Dr. Block!
Ernest L Isaacson, DPM, NY, NY
