Barry Students Participate in Maundy Thursday Tradition
In the Bible’s Book of John in the New Testament, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. Many Christians see this as an act of humility and service. Dozens of students from Barry University’s podiatry department chose to spend Friday providing a service that’s not only expensive but necessary to Miami’s homeless community.

“Being here, providing this service, this is absolutely what we want to do,” said Dr. Shanika Hill with Barry University. “We’re doing nail cutting, we’re doing callus trimmings, we’re doing evaluations of feet, vascular exams, neurological exams, muscular skeletal exams, just to kind of make sure that everybody’s feet are kind of up to par as they’re kind of traversing their day,” said Hill.

Hallux Joint Replacement Surgery Results in Faster Recovery: UT Podiatrist
An arthritic big toe joint is one of the most common foot problems that primarily affect women. “The pain associated with arthritic big toe joint is very severe,” says Ogden Clinic’s Dr. Jason Bruse. “The joint appears red, swollen, and may include a bump. Mobility decreases because walking is so painful. Women can no longer wear heeled shoes because even a slight bend or pressure application to the toe causes pain." Dr. Bruse performs Arthrosurface® joint replacements in Utah and educates doctors around the country about Arthrosurface® HemiCAP toe implants.
|
|
Dr. Jason Bruse |
“There’s a huge difference between replacing the joint and fusing it,” says Dr. Bruse. Arthrosurface® joint replacement features an anatomically contoured plate and non-locking screws that preserve the toe’s full range of motion. Dr. Bruse adds, “We’re not waiting for bones to heal and repair so recovery is much less difficult with this surgery."

Court Revives Infant Foot Surgery Suit Against NY Podiatrist
A New York appellate panel revived a malpractice suit against a Brooklyn podiatrist who allegedly caused an infant to experience constant pain after conducting a surgical procedure on her foot, saying it was unclear if the podiatrist had provided enough information beforehand on the surgery’s potential impact.
A four-judge panel for the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division’s Second Department on Wednesday said that a lower court was wrong to grant summary judgment to defendants Gary Saphire and Parkway Podiatry Group on plaintiff Michele Parrilla’s claim of podiatric malpractice and her allegation that she was not given sufficient information to properly consent to the surgery. The claims were brought on behalf of her infant child, Jessica, who was allegedly injured by a surgical procedure on her right foot that Michele Parrilla claimed was medically unnecessary.

MI Podiatrist Charged for Role in $13.9 Million Medicare Fraud Scheme
A Detroit podiatrist was charged in an indictment unsealed today for his alleged participation in a $13.9 million healthcare fraud scheme involving fraudulent claims for unnecessary foot surgeries and other podiatric services that were never rendered. Lawrence Young, DPM, of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, was charged with six counts of healthcare fraud in an indictment filed in the Eastern District of Michigan. Young was arrested this morning and made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Anthony P. Pattiof the Eastern District of Michigan.
According to the indictment, between January 2010 through 2016, Young falsely conveyed to his podiatry patients that they needed weekly or bi-weekly shots and minor surgeries to prevent hammertoes, which were allegedly medically unnecessary. As a result, these patients returned to his practice on a regular basis every month for shots and minor surgeries. Additionally, Young allegedly billed Medicare for other podiatry services, such as Unna boots, which were never given.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A | |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
There is no simple solution to this and there are multiple factors here. On one hand, asking for a credit card deposit on the phone does set a bad tone, but with high deductibles and co-payments and tight schedules, last minute cancellations are also unfair to other patients who otherwise would have been able to obtain care sooner.
I agree that calling the patient the day before to confirm is far better than collecting a credit card "deposit" on the potential new patient. However, the reality is that tight schedules and last minute (24 hours is last minute) cancellations are unfair to...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Brian Kiel, DPM
I have a different perspective on this issue. Even though it can be aggravating to have no- shows, perhaps you are better without them in the first place. Those who do that frequently will be the ones who will not follow instructions for care, especially post-op or with wounds. I prefer not to have those patients in my practice. Also, another aspect is that we do slightly overbook on purpose and when there are no- shows, which happens every day, it leaves me a chance to "catch up."
