'Good Samaritan' Helps Family of ill MT Podiatrist
Daniel Hodson, DPM, is a podiatrist with the Great Falls Clinic, a 41-year-old father of four who for years has been active and healthy. He organized “Rock The Clock” road races in Great Falls and his family has been leading proponents of an active lifestyle. His wife Emily said, “he’s normally very healthy, but he has developed some really serious problems with his kidneys.” Daniel got sick in early February. “Since then, he has had five surgeries,” Emily said.

Daniel’s condition worsened and he was hospitalized in Great Falls. He’d been scheduled to fly to New York City for surgery to save his left kidney. On the plane, he wasn't doing well, and “... this stranger shows up completely out of the blue,” Emily said. “He asked my husband to trade seats with him, to take his first-class seat, and he would sit in the back of the plane.” The story does not end there. More Men Now Having Shoe-Related Foot Problems: Aussie Podiatrist
"While there's a lot of press surrounding the issues of high heels and what they do to women's feet, the truth is that men are equally vulnerable to having painful problems with their feet," podiatrist Nicole Reilly told Daily Mail Australia. "Men tend to ignore foot and ankle problems more than women until it starts slowing them down."

"We are seeing a big shift in fashion shoes for men. As male fashion shoes become more available as options, we are seeing men suffer similar conditions that women in heels experience. We also see younger men wearing fashionable sneakers to the gym and lifting heavy weights. We are noticing an increase in injuries to this age group due to poor gym and work shoe choices," says Reilly.

TX Podiatrist Comments on 10-Year Milestone for HemiCAP(R) Implant
Franklin, Massachusetts based Arthrosurface, Inc. has announced the publication of mid-term data in the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM), "Metal Resurfacing Inlay Implant for Osteochondral Talar Defects After Failed Previous Surgery: A Mid-Term Prospective Follow-up Study." The study reported very high patient satisfaction, with 88% recommending the procedure to others. This marks the third independent mid- to long-term outcome data publication for the company across multiple product platforms.

Best Ways to Play the Prior Authorization Game - Part 6 & 7
There is nothing more frustrating to physicians than knowing a patient needs a certain diagnostic test or medication and having them not be able to get it because their health insurance company won’t cover it. All too often, many services require prior-authorization (PA). How can this prior-authorization game be played for better odds of winning?
6) Remember human resources. If a patient works at a company that has a HR department, have the patient get them involved. Insurance companies do not want to lose any covered lives so if they find a company is unhappy with the services provided, this can be a very effective weapon.
7) Ask for the medical director of the insurance company. Most of them were practicing medicine at some point and understand our struggles on the frontlines. If we present our medical reasoning with them, they often are able to authorize a test. Not always.

RE: Anyone Can be a Victim of Employee Theft

I just spent a lovely morning in court having to deal with an employee who stole nearly $13,000 from me over a period of four years, beginning in 2008. The original court date was April 9, 2014. At that time, the thief was given the opportunity to pay restitution during a period of probation, or go to jail. I agreed with the district attorney to allow her to pay restitution and not have a criminal record or any jail time. Was this a mistake? This morning, I appeared before the judge asking why, after four years, full restitution has still not been made. According to the original agreement, full restitution should’ve been paid at the end of one year.
Believe it or not, all of us are at risk for this above scenario. I never thought I would be. It happens more often than you think. Please, please consider that you could be a victim yourself. There are many ways to prevent what happened to me. Please take the steps necessary and don’t let this happen to you.

Dr. Forman asks an important question. Should podiatrists be held responsible for examining a person’s legs? The answer should be divided into two parts. What is legally mandated and what is morally necessary.
From the legal aspect, if one practices in a state where the scope of practice goes up to the knee, whether it is only soft tissue or soft tissue and bone, it would seem that those podiatrists would be legally obligated to examine a person’s legs when doing a podiatric examination and it would appear that if he or she missed a melanoma or some other malignancy, the doctor would be held responsible. In states where the scope is limited to ankle and/or distal to it, then it becomes a moral issue. In years gone by, when all podiatrists used hydrotherapy as part of their practices, all podiatrists were forced to look at a patient's legs because patients had to raise their clothing above the knee so as to not get it wet. This forced all podiatrists to do at least a cursory exam of the entire lower extremity.

Dr. Forman raises the issue of a concurrent E/M code with nail and/or callus care. In the case of the diabetic patient, the question Dr. Forman brings to the table is rather straightforward. What is your job as a podiatric physician? Your “job” is to improve quality of life, and reduce the risk of limb loss. This requires the identification of risk factors and the initiation of appropriate interventions. Subsequently, the effectiveness and safety of such therapies and appropriate adjustments must be conducted.
That requires evaluation and treatment of dermatologic, neurologic, arterial, venous, musculoskeletal, rheumatic pathologies, gait and fall risk evaluation, and assessment of footwear. In my humble opinion, the problem is not that Dr. Forman’s 33% concurrent E/M use is above the norm. The problem is...
