PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
CA Podiatrist Discusses Team Physician’s Role in Sports Medicine

According to Howard F. Liebeskind, DPM, an internationally recognized podiatric sports medicine specialist and current team podiatrist to the Los Angeles Lakers, the role of podiatric team physicians in multidisciplinary sports medicine encompasses optimization of athletic performance, prevention of injury, and the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related conditions.

Dr. Howard Liebeskind

Dr. Liebeskind asserts that in today's landscape of high-performance sports medicine, a dedicated team podiatrist is not only common but also essential and that their active involvement elevates the performance of individual athletes and helps contribute to the overall success of the team, organization, and franchise served.

ON THE LECTURE CIRCUIT
NYCPM Orthopedic Faculty Lecture at NJPMS Annual Meeting

The New Jersey Podiatric Medical Society (NJPMS) joined with the New Jersey Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons to present the Atlantic Regional Osteopathic Conference of 2024 held April 10th-April 13th at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Joseph C. D’Amico, DPM, DSc, Professor of Orthopedics and Pediatrics and Samantha Landau, DPM, MPH, Assistant Professor at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in the Division of Orthopedics Sciences, were featured presenters.

Drs. Joseph D'Amico and Samantha Landau

In his lecture titled, “The Asymptomatic Pediatric Flatfoot: Identification, Justification, and Management,” Dr. D’Amico dispelled myths and misconceptions regarding the premise that the excessively pronated child’s foot is outgrown on its own. He urged that based on years of observation, investigation and analysis all agreeing with reason that this foot should be aggressively and conservatively managed. Dr. Landau's presented, “A Critical Analysis of Studies Refuting the Effectiveness of Orthoses in Children and New Updated Data”. She reviewed the results of a new study that determined the age of onset of musculoskeletal problems in the untreated adult at 31 years of age, further reinforcing Dr. D’Amico’s presentation.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
9 Tips for Collecting from Patients

Experts provide nine tips to help practices successfully collect patient balances.

5A. Continue post-visit collection calls..but with sensitivity.

Denny Flint, chief commercial officer at Millennia, a tech-enabled patient engagement company specializing in the recovery of end-to-end patient financial obligation, suggests calling patients after the same invoice remains unpaid after two billing cycles to make sure they received it, answer any questions they have and try to connect in some way.

To minimize questions, be sure to send a clear and concise invoice. This includes the service date, location, provider, description of the service rendered, amount insurance paid (including primary and any secondary insurance), and the amount the patient owes, says Flint. Differentiate between co-payment and co-insurance amounts, he adds.

Arden Smith, DPM

Congratulations on your 30 years of service to our community. I remember watching the days when the subscription numbers would go up by one and two at a time. You’ve been a service to all of us. I know the dialogue and the ability to find information has been a regular part of my practice patterns. You have guided PM News with a very steady hand and very open for multiple viewpoints. RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)

I am sad by the passing of Ira Tartack. I really enjoyed his company at the podiatry meetings. He was very cheerful, outgoing, and had a nice personality. Ira definitively made his presence known, rest in peace brother.

Walter Perez, DPM

Ira was a talented surgeon, great instructor, always there to help a colleague, and all-around genuine mensch! He always added something to a discussion that he seemingly pulled out of his hat, and was always on spot. Sincere condolences to his family. He will be missed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS)

Surgeons should also check with their malpractice policy to make sure they are covered for cosmetic procedures as some policies do not.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING AND BILLING)
From: Robert D Teitelbaum, DPM

The second posting of the Michigan podiatrists' exhaustive essay on the murky origins and unjustifiable requirements for a nail avulsion procedure evoked a negative response from a reader which was critical of the repetitious, redundant, and long-winded nature of the post. Which it was on all counts, but with a very good reason.

This was a letter to the National Government Services (NGS) for an LCD reconsideration of this code. In this type of letter, which was tantamount to a legal brief, and was read by bureaucrats who are surely negatively disposed against the thesis of this type of letter, repetition is essential, and an incremental build of the logic of the argument is required.

In this they succeeded on all counts, and hopefully there will be some positive response to their letter. This is podiatry's dealing with 'the deep state', and it is boring, unfair, but absolutely essential to make this argument in this way.
