IA Podiatrist Uses 3D Printed Talus for Ankle Replacement
Shaka Robinson learned to live with pain after an accident 20 years ago. "I fell out of a car, and separated my foot from my tibia," Robinson explains. Back then, doctors reconstructed his ankle with pins. He went about his life without any big problems until he moved to Iowa this summer. "I thought I had twisted it in my yard doing yard work," he recalls. It became inflamed and infected, so he came to Broadlawns Medical Center. He learned the talus bone in his ankle was dead and had to be removed.

"The nice thing is, two years ago your option would have been to go in and tear out that bone and pack this whole thing of just a bone graft and fuse up your whole rear foot and ankle and none of it would have ever moved again," says podiatrist Mica Murdoch, DPM. Dr. Murdoch had a new option. In January, Dr. Murdoch performed a total ankle replacement with a talus bone made from a 3D printer. "They use the normal ankle, or the healthy ankle in order to build a mirror image bone that we can use to replace the one that has been damaged or destroyed," he said.

MI Podiatrist Provides Advice on Preventing Athlete's Foot
The snow and ice are finally melting and people are starting to break out of their houses. Shaking this winter weather, people are headed out to the trails. "This is a great time for tinea pedis. Tinea is a fungal infection of the skin and [fungi] need a moist environment,” said Conway McLean, DPM. Dr. McLean reminds people to take a few precautionary steps to avoid the discomfort athlete's foot could cause. Wearing different shoes two days in a row can allow boots or shoes to dry out. This technique also works if you are prone to having sweaty feet.

"If you have a problem with perspiration and you are doing some hiking or outdoor activities, coming equipped with an extra pair of socks is great,” said Dr. McLean. “Even foot powder can be used to avoid some extra moisture.” If you are the unlucky contractor of athlete’s foot, remember to aerate your feet and apply OTC medication if desired. "But one of the keys of treating tinea of the feet is to continue to apply an anti-fungal, even after it looks better because organisms will go into hiding," Dr. McLean said.

“Compression socks are, as they sound, providing compression,” says New York City-based podiatrist Ernest L. Isaacson, DPM. “Blood is pumped away from the heart via the arteries, and then it comes back via the veins. That should be a pretty even process, but if the veins (or the lymphatic system), which drain the fluid out of the legs don’t work quite as well, you’re going to develop some kind of pooling in the legs.” In the high pressure environment of an airplane, the blood stops moving and your feet might swell up like twin balloons.

KS Podiatrist Has License Suspended for False CME Certification
Dr. Dean Carter, who has practiced podiatry in South Hutchinson, had his license indefinitely suspended by the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts. The board found Carter committed fraud in securing a renewal license when he certified he completed continuing education credits. He misrepresented his compliance with the continuing education requirement on a minimum of five occasions, stretching back years.

How to Protect your Reputation Against Defamatory Online Reviews - Part 4
Doctors, dentists, psychologists, clinical laboratories, and other medical providers have a right to defend their reputations and livelihoods against reviewers who spread false and damaging claims. Fortunately, there are a variety of legal options available to combat defamatory online reviews.
4. Address the review. If the review contains only statements of opinion, consider alternative methods for addressing it, such as pursuing any takedown procedures or other features the review platform provides to help business owners address negative reviews.

Query: Purging Patient Charts
I am having a company come out to shred old patient charts, EOBs, and other various insurance information. I understand you are required to keep charts for seven years. I would like to be able to shred charts and patient information from the year 2012 and before. Can all of the charts from 2012 be disposed of since technically it won't be seven years from 2012 charts dated April 2012 forward? Does it go by calendar year or actual time?

Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. The seven year time period for retaining charts is not a legal requirement; it is a widely espoused recommedation of practice management experts. Medicare, for example, has a five-year lookback period, and state requirements fo retaining records vary.

The Social Security number is not a necessary requirement for treatment nor is it a necessary requirement for billing for a patient. The only reason, I can think of, you "might" need the Social Security number is for the purpose of sending a patient's account to a collection service.
I do think it is important to have enough identification to confirm that the person you are treating and the insurance being used are for the appropriate person. I further believe you need enough correct information in order to contact the patient as might be necessary for their medical care. I do not believe the SS# is necessary for these purposes.

As a 57-year-old podiatrist (Class 1987, UK, England) who also graduated from the American system of podiatry education in 2016, I have a little insight. I concur 100% with Dr. Markinson. Podiatric and medical education are similar: on paper. Podiatry school attempts to cram in topics in a few hours of 'teaching' that will receive three months of studious attention in medical school. This disparity, among others, is ever more evident when the hapless podiatry resident is thrown into the e.g. vascular service, in residency, charged with the duty to keep the patients safe and attempt to match the effort of the medical resident. A plea to the movers and shakers of podiatry education: wake up and smell the coffee. That's just an absurdity.
I will also agree that if podiatry were ever to follow the model of the osteopath, in the quest for 'parity', podiatry will wither away. I, for one, am quite happy with what I know, and what I can do. Had I wanted to work as an MD, I would have gone to medical school, not podiatry school.

It was the first day or two that I spent at OCPM in the fall of 1972 that our dean Abe Rubin, DPM told us why real doctors (i.e.. MDs) did not consider podiatrists real doctors. He stated they said this because podiatrists did not deliver any babies during their training. Dr. Rubin stated that beginning with our class, that would all change!
I remember spending 6 weeks in an externship at an osteopathic hospital in Texas in the fall of 1975. While there, every Wednesday I observed podiatric surgery. For 24 hours a day, one of us was on call for assisting on obstetric deliveries. I remember assisting on 27 deliveries while I was there. I am not sure this experience made me feel more like a real doctor when I graduated. I do know that it convinced me that I would not have become an obstetrician even if I was able to!
