PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
10 CT Podiatrists Provide Foot Exams for Homeless

A line of people stood outside Dunkin’ Donuts Park on Saturday morning, but they weren’t there for baseball: They wanted New Balance sneakers. Volunteers from UConn and the Hartford Police Department helped them pick out free, factory-fresh sneakers and socks, and 10 volunteer podiatrists provided free foot exams.

Dr. Lynn LeBlanc

Bloomfield podiatrist Lynn LeBlanc, DPM lined up podiatrists willing to donate a couple of half-days a year to provide foot exams; frequently, they find infections, blisters, or untreated injuries. “Today there was a woman with shortness of breath and swelling in her legs. It was most likely a blood clot — we sent her to the hospital,” LeBlanc said. “Another woman had an (untreated) ankle fracture. A lot of what we see is from neglect, or where people just hope it will go away.”

REMEMBERING PODIATRISTS
Cancer Wellness Center Named After OH Podiatrist Looks to Expand

Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center (SCP) is seeking assistance from Summit County officials in finding a new home with more space. At the April 1 meeting, SCP Executive Director Jeannine Marks and Director of Operations and Programs Stephanie Davis-Dieringer provided a presentation that included a brief video about the cancer wellness organization. Marks added that SCP, which now has 7,400 square feet, is “bursting at the seams” and has launched a $3 million fundraising campaign to renovate or build a new facility.

Dr. Stewart Surloff

SCP opened in October 2014 with a bequest from Dr. Stewart Surloff. A podiatrist who died of lung cancer on Dec. 20, 2001, Surloff wanted to create a facility to help those facing cancer and survivors with a variety of resources and offer patients a break from the medical side of the disease through a comfortable, healing place. The holistic facility offers a variety of physical, emotional, and financial support for visitors of all ages, free of charge.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
How to Protect your Reputation Against Defamatory Online Reviews - Part 3

Doctors, dentists, psychologists, clinical laboratories, and other medical providers have a right to defend their reputations and livelihoods against reviewers who spread false and damaging claims. Fortunately, there are a variety of legal options available to combat defamatory online reviews.

3. Determine if the review qualifies as purported fact. Work with your lawyer to determine whether the statements in the negative online review qualify as statements of purported fact. To do this, you may need to parse the language carefully to determine exactly what the reviewer was communicating. Often times, statements may initially appear to be factual but after a deeper look may constitute opinion, or vice versa.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Must Patients Supply Social Security Numbers

I just had a patient refuse to give an entire ss#, and only gave the last 4 digits. Am I breaking any law if I accept that for my records?

Larry Aronberg, DPM, Lake Worth, FL

Editor's comment: PM News does provide legal advice. Given the rise of identity theft, Medicare and most (if not all) insurance companies no longer use a patient's Social Security number on their insurance card. Therefore, unless there is a legitimate need for the number, such as using a company to finance a medical bill, a patient is not required to provide a Social Security number. On the flip side, if the patient refuses to provide identifying information and you feel s(he) is at risk of not paying your bill, you are under no obligation to accept the patient.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Ordering Lyme Disease Tests

The CDC has now confirmed that in the most recent available statistics, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York rank the highest in the number of confirmed cases of Lyme disease. Based on this, it is probably advisable for podiatrists practicing in the above states to order a Lyme disease test when evaluating patients who present with joint pain and swelling.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
RE: Using the DPM Degree Outside of Podiatry
From: Bryan C. Markinson, DPM

I have stayed away from this discussion (but Alan Sherman drew me in) because I feel the hard facts as I see them regarding podiatric medical/medical/DO equivalency are also going to be hard truths.

First of all, the notion that a gynecology course and psychiatry course evens up the score is an outrageous fantasy. It does so only on paper. The milieu, structure, oversight, support, etc. in a medical school is different than...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
RE: Using the DPM Degree Outside of Podiatry
From: Ty Hussain, DPM

I have to commend all these great physicians and their inputs as to basically answer our question of who we are and where our profession is headed. I would love to be on a panel at any of our national or regional meetings as this topic and anything relevant to it will draw crowds by the thousands.

After reading much of what has been stated, the need for DPMs to be equal or this so called parity to our MD colleagues will only begin with us having the initials MD behind our names. That being said, discussion has now led us to...
