AZ Podiatrist Discusses Achilles Tendon Ruptures
Unfortunately, relief for Achilles tendon ruptures does not happen overnight. Recovery times vary depending on if a surgical or non-surgical treatment approach is prescribed. "Treatment processes are dependent upon a patient's overall health, activity level, and ability to follow a functional rehabilitation protocol," said Jeffrey E. McAlister, DPM, FACFAS, a fellowship-trained Arizona foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow member of ACFAS.
|
|
Dr. Jeffrey McAlister |
According to Dr. McAlister, typically, unhealthy and less-active patients may choose a non-operative approach, since they are not trying to return to active sports. But, we should keep in mind that the re-rupture rate is roughly 10 percent higher with non-operative treatment. "A non-operative approach works well in a patient who does not have the expectation of aggressive sports and activities. This usually involves a lengthy functional rehabilitation process," said Dr. McAlister.

It's Easier to Prevent Addiction Than to Stop it - IN Podiatrist
After losing five Griffith High School graduates to heroin overdoses early this year, the Griffith Public Schools has decided to join the fight against the drug. The school district is bringing Dr. Mann Spitler to the community to have a frank talk to students, then the community. Spitler and his wife Phyllis were devastated 15 years ago when their 20-year-old daughter Manda died of a heroin overdose.

Dr. Mann Spitler |
Since that horrific tragedy, the Valparaiso podiatrist has dedicated his life to helping youth steer clear of drugs and assisting families already in the throes of helping a drug-addicted child. “I was part of the NCAA club – No Clue At All,” Spitler said. “I was introduced to the drug culture when Manda got into trouble. What I learned first and foremost: It is much easier to prevent drug use than it is to stop it.”

NY Podiatrist Composes Hymn as Final Birthday Gift
On Saturday, the Richmond County Orchestra performed the world premiere of "Hymn for Kathy," composed by Dr. Howard Fox, at the Olivet Presbyterian Church in West Brighton. But the performance doesn't translate into an ordinary aria. The "Kathy" of which the good doctor refers, is Kathy Vorwick, one of the early founders of the Greenbelt Conservancy and a devout environmentalist.

"She interviewed me for the board and then took sick," said Dr. Fox, an Oakwood podiatrist, before adding: "She was in hospice when she had a birthday. She was a very spiritual person and active in her church. So what do you get someone for their last birthday? I wrote this Hymn for her, and the RCO picked it up and offered to perform it."

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
7 Essential Elements for Your Practice Website - Part 2
About Us: Although you may have been in practice for 28 years, that fact alone may not impress your potential patient. What patients want to know is why they should choose you over the competition. How you separate yourself from your competitors is known as your unique selling proposition or USP. If you need help defining what is your USP, here are some questions you can ask yourself:
-
What does your practice do?
-
Why did you start your practice?
-
What do you enjoy most about your practice?
-
What makes your practice different from others that provide similar services?
A prospective patient will gain more insight on your practice, with a well-written 'About Us' page that answers those questions.

RE: Longitudinal Arch Load-Sharing System of the Foot
From: Kevin A. Kirby, DPM
I recently had a paper published online titled “Longitudinal Arch Load-Sharing System of the Foot” in the Spanish Podiatry Journal, Revista Española de Podología, a journal which most podiatrists in the U.S. are probably not aware of. This journal, edited by Javier Pascual Huerta, PhD, publishes all articles in both Spanish and English and has been in existence now since 2015. Previous authors such as Craig Payne and Alan Banks, along with a number of Spanish authors have also contributed papers to this new and upcoming international podiatric journal.

With sorrow, I learned of the passing of my friend and classmate Sheldon Weintraub. Several weeks ago, I was having dinner in Delray Beach, Florida when I heard a voice that was so familiar. I turned and sitting at the next table was Leonard Labush, a classmate from Temple University School of Chiropody, 1959. We talked through dinner, reliving old memories.
When I got home, I decided to call Sheldon, for we had not talked for several years. My call went to voice mail and was not returned. I completely forgot about the call, when on March 7th, my phone rang with an unfamiliar area code and number. This would normally go to voice mail but for some unknown reason, I chose to answer. It was Marge Weintraub who filled me in on what was happening and asked if I would call Sheldon around 2PM. I called and spent close to an hour catching up on family , friends, and old times. Just before the call ended, I promised to call again in a month. This call is on my calendar for Tuesday April 11. Needless to say, it is a call I wanted to make but will never have the opportunity to do. My deepest condolences to Marge and family. They have lost a truly unique man.

Find each price list by typing in your search engine "Walmart $4 list", "Publix free prescriptions", "Target $4 generic drug plan", etc. There is a link to their PDF file and/or website. I created a file on my computer and store the PDFs there. The pricing for most of the OTC and common drugs that I recommend is just in my head. The OTC price may very in your area. When you are shopping in any store with a "foot products aisle", just take a gander at what could benefit your patients as well as what you would not recommend. This will also give you an idea of what patients may have tried before ever seeing you.
I have counted more that 20 different shoe inserts in many drugstores. Some are just inserts; others are arches. Some may be comparable to what you dispense from your office. I hope not. Three tubes of Biofreeze are $23.77 on Amazon, so I don't sell it in the office anymore. A search of Amazon even yields 40% urea cream for less than $14; walking cast boots and post-op shoes all sell for less. So, if you dispense products, it may behoove you to know costs elsewhere, especially on Amazon. Amazon Prime can be helpful to your practice. I needed a closed post-op shoe for a postal worker and got it in two days with Amazon Prime.

From: Chet Evans, DPM
I have read the comments concerning this posting regarding my resignation, and am concerned at the simplistic view some have taken regarding this issue. State boards are legislatively evolved bodies, and correction of the exposure to potential anti-trust liability requires legislative mandated changes to statues or laws. Nor is it resolved with the simple purchase of D&O insurance; it does not protect governmental entities. An individual can buy his/her own expensive anti-trust liability policy, but why should you have to do that as a volunteer representing the best interests of your state?
Recently, the Federation of Podiatric Medical Boards surveyed the various states on their response to this Supreme Court ruling from 2015, and you would be surprised at how few are doing anything legislatively. There is some traction here in Florida in Tallahassee, but it looks as if it is not going to make it through this legislative session, and if that is the case, the three professional members who remain on our board continue to be exposed. And keep in mind, this affects every professional board in each state. There are professional boards/board members that are being sued as we speak, having to pay for their defense and any damages, and it is certainly not a "simple" issue to them.
