PM News Marks 30th Anniversary
This issue commemorates the 30th anniversary of PM News. This publication, which started out in 1992 as notes exchanged between a few dozen podiatrists on the Prodigy service, began formally publishing as PM News in April 1994. In the interim, PM News has grown from 150 initial subscribers to over 22,000 podiatrists and students, becoming podiatry’s daily newspaper.

Routine Foot Exams Prevent Future Health Issues: AR Podiatrist
Podiatrist Kory Miskin, DPM of Northwest Medical Plaza – Springdale is encouraging patients to put their best foot forward by following a few simple healthy feet tips. The majority of adults in the U.S. acknowledge that they do not care for their feet as regularly as some other body parts such as their heart or teeth. In fact, only two in 10 regularly give their foot health a great deal of thought. Because foot health can be an indicator for other health problems, it is important to take care of your feet each day.
|
|
Dr. Kory Miskin |
"Because we have seen the effects of delayed care, we continually stress the importance of preventative measures," Dr. Miskin said. "Putting your 'best foot forward' means routine foot checks - especially for those with diabetes or other systemic diseases, like peripheral arterial disease."

MI Podiatrist Discusses Remote Patient Monitoring
According to Conway McLean, DPM, “Remote patient monitoring (RPM) is the term developed for this direction in electronic devices, coming under the auspices of home telehealth. The concept allows for the use of mobile medical devices to gather specific information about some particular patient, which is then sent to the appropriate healthcare provider. Depending on what is being monitored, these can look at numerous factors affecting health.”
|
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
“Some of the more common components of overall health include heart rate, blood pressure, weight changes, breathing, sleep, and others. These devices are quickly becoming a vital part of chronic disease management and for numerous conditions. The benefits of a physician being able to monitor minute to minute changes in blood sugar for a diabetic, or respirations in someone with lung disease, are significant for many population groups.”

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
9 Tips for Collecting from Patients
Experts provide nine tips to help practices successfully collect patient balances.
4. Offer a payment plan.
Cheryl Mongillo, practice manager in Wilmington, Delaware, doesn’t want patients to forgo or delay care because they can’t afford it. “Most of our patients who are on these plans are people we’ve seen for 20 or 25 years who have fallen on some rough times,” she says.
However, remember that the longer it takes patients to pay off their debt, the less value that money has to the clinic because of overhead, salaries, and other expenses, says Sergio Quiej, Texas-based independent revenue cycle consultant who recommends three or four monthly installments.

RE: The Passing of Ira Tartack, DPM
I am sad to announce that Ira Tartack, DPM of Brooklyn NY who did his post-graduate residency at NYCPM recently passed away at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer. Ira was in practice for many decades and was a longtime surgical attending at NY Community Hospital. Over the years, Ira trained many residents and befriended myself and all the new attendings. He had a unique sense of humor and was always eager to share his vast depth of knowledge with the entire medical community.
|
|
Dr. Ira Tartack |
Ira leaves behind a wife, daughter, three sons and four grandchildren. Ira will be missed by all he touched. RIP my friend.

Salus University, the former Pennsylvania College of Optometry, now has a certified Orthotics & Prosthetics program. Has our profession completely abandoned a science and a skill that distinguished us from other health providers?

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS) | |
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH
I am happy to see foot screening occurring in Malta public schools. I have tried multiple times to do school screening of feet here in California with no success. I believe foot screening is as essential as screening for scoliosis. Has anybody been able to break through and get a local school district to do them. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I think this is very important and should be done for all elementary school children.

From: Steven Mazer, DPM
Dr. Jill Berkowitz-Berliner is confused about not being allowed to treat bunions cosmetically with possibly not being reimbursed by an insurance company. A podiatrist may, with informed consent of the patient, perform a bunionectomy for cosmetic reasons in the state of New York. The patient would need to be made aware of the fact that his or her insurance may not pay for the procedure and that the patient would be responsible for any fees associated with that procedure.
Steven Mazer, DPM (retired), Woodbury, NY
