PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
How to Protect your Reputation Against Defamatory Online Reviews - Part 2
Doctors, dentists, psychologists, clinical laboratories, and other medical providers have a right to defend their reputations and livelihoods against reviewers who spread false and damaging claims. Fortunately, there are a variety of legal options available to combat defamatory online reviews.
2. Seek legal advice Unlike many other industries, healthcare providers operate in a highly-regulated environment. Providers should be extremely careful when confronting defamatory reviews, as they must not violate any of the ethical, legal, or regulatory guidelines, e.g., HIPAA, that govern doctor-patient relationships. In addition to regulatory concerns, healthcare practices should keep the following steps in mind when considering whether or how to address negative online reviews:
Seek a lawyer. Consult a lawyer with experience handling defamation matters for healthcare providers. These matters are fraught with potential peril if not handled properly, so you need to work with a qualified and effective advocate. After all, your practice and reputation are on the line not only because of the defamatory review but in how you respond to it.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Differences between CPT 64722 and CPT 64704
I am having a difficult time understanding the differences between two codes: CPT 64704; neuroplasty; nerve of hand or foot and CPT 64722: decompression; unspecified nerve(s). Are these two codes interchangeable?
Archived Codingline Question
Response: The question is really what is the difference between neuroplasty and nerve decompression?
CPT 64704 - Neuroplasty; nerve of hand or foot means surgery to repair or restore nerve tissue in the foot for podiatrists.
CPT 64722 -Decompression; unspecified nerve(s) (specify) means relieving pressure on a nerve usually by cutting away restrictive bands of tissue in foot, ankle or leg for podiatrists.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A |
RE: Using DPM Degree Outside of Podiatry
From: David S. Wolf, DPM, Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM
With only a 45% pass rate for the ABFAS Certification test, maybe the USMLE will be easier? Maybe that is one of the reasons that younger DPMs are looking outside of their DPM degrees for more realistic opportunities. The ABFAS needs to make their requirements to even sit for the exam more seamless as well as make the exam more relevant and less esoteric (I was board certified with ABFAS).
David S. Wolf, DPM, Retired, Houston, TX
What should we do to the podiatry colleges that refuse to add Ob/Gyn, Peds, and Psych? Does your alma mater offer these courses? Are you a member of the alumni association? If so, would you contact them and let them know you expect them to offer a modern and complete education?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B |
RE: Using DPM Degree Outside of Podiatry
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM
In the almost 39 years since I graduated from NYCPM, it is my assertion that very little has changed in the world of parity with MDs and DOs. I will also say that very little has changed in podiatric medical education in terms of teaching our students cause and effect. We still focus on attacking symptoms and when we fail, we turn to surgery. The reality is that if every podiatrist understood the reasons why patients presented to his/her office with a problem, we would be light years ahead in our transition to parity.
Here is an example: I lectured to a group of podiatric residents. I asked them what could be the underlying cause of...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1C |
RE: Using DPM Degree Outside of Podiatry
From: Joe Agostinelli, DPM
I have been following this discussion closely and would like to present comments from experiences in my 23 year USAF active duty military career and then 14 years in private practice as a DPM in a large orthopedic surgery/sports medicine group. Ultimately, it is not the "degree" that allows other than podiatry utilization, but the "person."
While in the military, I found that when it came to additional duties such as - ACLS instructor and affiliate faculty, trauma management lectures, executive committees of medical staff, chief of surgical services (including orthopedics), etc., my actual degree did NOT matter! It was the...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
If patients with diabetes who have low vitamin D levels are three times more likely to develop foot ulcerations, should we be routinely ordering vitamin D tests for our diabetic patients?
What is triggering this question is the problem that many of our carriers including Medicare have with ordering vitamin D lab tests. Unless we can document osteopenia or osteoporosis, many insurance companies will not pay for vitamin D blood tests, and the patients will have to pay out-of-pocket. Could Dr. Chai's study linking vitamin D deficiency to greater chances of getting foot ulcers be enough to demand that insurance companies pay for the test?
