PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
MA Podiatrist Discusses Children and Foot Health
Podiatrist Dr. Neil Feldman warns that children with foot problems often don’t complain of pain. They just get tired easily, won’t participate in activities they like, or they move in an uncoordinated manner. Parents should watch for those signs and have children examined if they feel there may be a problem.
|
Dr. Neil Feldman |
“Children also outgrow their shoes more quickly than parents expect,” he said. “The shoe needs to match the shape of the foot. If a child’s foot is wide in front, the shoe needs to be wide in front.”

“The Most Popular Brand…”
“I have been dispensing Orthofeet shoes, as part of my diabetic shoe program, for a number of years. By far, they are the most popular brand of shoe. My patients enjoy the numerous styles, and the good looks of these shoes. I like the selection, easy fitting, and affordability. Dispensing Orthofeet shoes has been a very positive experience in my office.

ON THE LECTURE CIRCUIT |
AZ Podiatrist Presents Virtual Keynote Address to Brooklyn Hospital
David G. Armstrong, Professor of Surgery and Director of the University of Arizona's Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA), delivered a video keynote address to New York's Coney Island Hospital. "It was a pleasure to do this lecture virtually with Dr. Glenn Donovan, Chief of Podiatric Surgery at Coney Island Hospital," noted Dr. Armstrong.
|
Dr. David Armstrong |
"To be able to project our efforts and collaborations virtually like this with such regularity worldwide really is satisfying. We call it 'spreading the SALSA'," said Armstrong. Dr. Donovan noted, "I took this position many years ago in part on Dr. Armstrong's advice, and the job is really making a difference."

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
MA Podiatrist Honored by His Temple
Each year, Beth El Temple Center spotlights the achievements of individual congregants. This year, the Temple committee, chaired by Florence Cooperstein, honored Dr. David Alper, who is is well known in Belmont as a podiatrist for 25 years and also from his 24 years as Chairman of the Belmont Department of Health. Alper is also one of the founders of the Belmont Youth Commission and received “Citizen of the Year” in 2005. Less well known is Alper’s interest in blacksmithing; he may have the only blacksmith forge in Belmont, for him a healthy outlet in hammering metal after performing delicate foot surgery.
|
Dr. David Alper |
Also less well known is Alper’s early training overseas. In 1984, Alper earned a fellowship at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. At the time, podiatry was not an established specialty in Israel or in Egypt. On short notice, the Israelis picked up Alper in a jeep, drove him to the Suez Canal and he took a ferry to Egypt. He lived near the Pyramids for a month and taught Egyptian physicians.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS |
Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present excerpts from Meet the Masters.
Bret Ribotsky: What kind of person does it take to be a residency director?
|
Dr. Alan Catanzariti |
Alan Catanzariti: I think it is somebody who just really enjoys teaching. If you feel you have something to give back, and if you feel you have something to offer in terms of teaching, I think it requires just a little bit of passion and interest more than anything else. I think you just really need somebody who wants to teach residents, wants to deal with young people, wants to be able to get involved in training the future of our profession. I certainly hope a lot of people reading this will give consideration to getting involved in residency training.

Dr. Paul Kinberg |
Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday Night at 9 PM (EST). The next segment will feature coding and compliance expert Dr. Paul Kinberg. You can register for this event by clicking here

RE: Orthotic for Golfer With Met Adductus Foot
From: Dwight L. Bates, Roody Samimi, DPM
A panel of Plastizote could be placed on the lateral/plantar aspect of the left shoe to accommodate the styloid process of the foot. Probably, the shoe would have to be replaced/repaired very often.
Dwight L. Bates, DPM, Dallas, TX, dlbates04@yahoo.com
I would consider a custom orthotic to give adequate pronation control, minimal fill to the medial arch. If the pain is on the side of the 5th metatarsal base, your biggest challenge will be to get a wide enough orthotic for a wide enough shoe - the patient may need to get these in wide sizes. If it's sub-5th met base, you may want to consider something such as a 5th ray cut out, depending on any calluses or lack of stiffness (also sometimes termed "hypermobility") in the 5th ray. Also with these wider overpronating met adductus foot types, you don't want too thick of an orthotic (i.e., avoid bottom cover, remove old insert from shoe) so that both the foot and orthotic can fit comfortably into the shoe.

RE: Presentation to Nursing Students (Michael Lawrence, DPM)
From: Richard Wolff, DPM, Kenneth L. James, DPM, MPA
I have given presentations to nursing students and MD residents in the past. It is very rewarding, as they are usually very appreciative of the education that we can offer. I would be happy to share PowerPoints that I created and used in the past. Contact me.
Richard Wolff, DPM, Oregon, OH, wolffie@sbcglobal.net
When I was active serving nursing homes, I was often asked to give educational in-services to staff and sometimes family members. I usually spoke for fifteen minutes about what I wanted them to know that would help me better care for the patients; e.g., how to identify circulatory problems, early ulcerations, and infections.
After this, I would have a question and answer period. This kept my talk extremely interesting as....

RE: Celebrex Not Being Detailed to Podiatrists (Jeffrey Kass, DPM)
From: Gerald Mauriello, Jr., DPM, MA, Robert Kuvent, RPh, DPM
Certain reps for Celebrex/Pfizer will call on internists, others cardiologists, and still others Ortho and podiatry. Not every rep calls on every specialty. It is very likely that there is, in fact, a rep in your area who does service DPMs. I would contact Pfizer. I'm sure they can put you in contact with him or her.
Gerald Mauriello, Jr., DPM, MA, Freehold, NJ, drmauriello@gmail.com
With all due respect to Dr. Kass, one should prescribe based on the best drug available, not on who gives you free samples.

RE: Advertisements for Laser Treatment of Onychomycosis (Ken Meisler, DPM)
From: Bryan C. Markinson, DPM
I know Dr. Ken Meisler for many years. I refer him patients for certain problems with pleasure, and they are always satisfied. In every regard, I consider him an ethical colleague. However, I am not at all sure what Dr. Meisler addresses in his post except to tout his own ethical behavior regarding his use of laser for onychomycosis. In his last sentence, he states, "I hope Dr. Markinson will agree that after giving patients a more realistic expectation that it is appropriate to use laser for fungus toenails."
I never, at any point, questioned the appropriateness of this modality. I only questioned...

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) |
RE: FL Podiatrist Charged With Child Abuse
From: Olga Luepschen, DPM
As a Florida podiatrist practicing in Highlands County, I was offended that PM News quoted the Highlands Today newspaper regarding Dr. Evaristo Rivero's arrest. Many times newspapers print information incorrectly and prematurely without knowing all the facts.
I feel that PM News should have waited until all the facts are known. This type of story isn't helping podiatry's image, especially since Dr. Rivero has not been convicted of anything.
