OSF Podiatrists Washed Feet for Carpenter’s Place Guests
OSF Podiatrists and St. Anthony’s Medical Center physicians washed, and trimmed nails for guests at Carpenter’s Place on Thursday. The event honors Holy Thursday, which is believed to be the day Jesus celebrated his last Passover with his disciples. Jesus also washed his disciples’ feet and encouraged them to do the same for each other.

They also gifted guests with new socks and shoes. “I would love it if we can continue this through the state of Illinois or even the whole United States with every single podiatrist on this day doing some charitable act. ABPM Petition Successful in Oregon
The Oregon Medical Board (OMB) held a hearing on April 6, 2023 on a petition from the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM) to remove the requirement to be board certified (in RRA) by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) in order to have the license to perform ankle surgery. The ABPM also filed a lawsuit in the Oregon Court of Appeals versus the OMB challenging the constitutionality of the rule. In the hearing, the OMB acknowledged it must amend its rules to remove the requirement of ABFAS certification.
Oregon was 1 of only 4 states to require board certification to have full access to the scope of practice in podiatry. No state has a board certification requirement for any part of the scope of an MD or DO license. This requirement meant that only 15% of Oregon podiatrists had the license to perform ankle surgery, regardless of their training. In an email, ABPM called the decision "a victory for patients and podiatrists in Oregon!"

MO Podiatrist Pleads Guilty to Federal Healthcare Fraud Charges
A podiatrist who practiced in East St. Louis pleaded guilty in a U.S. district court on Thursday to committing healthcare fraud from 2016 to 2020. Howard Jackson, 69, of Florissant, Missouri, admitted he routinely billed Medicare and Medicaid for procedures he did not perform. Dr. Jackson admitted in court records that, on many occasions when he billed for a nail avulsion, he had not used anesthesia and had provided only routine foot care like trimming and clipping nails. Jackson cheated Medicare and Medicaid out of at least $144,694.69 as a result of the fraud, court records state.

Student Loan Concepts to Know During Tax Season
With tax season approaching, many people are focused on gathering all the tax forms to make sure they don’t miss the April deadline; however, few will pause to inquire how their tax filing could impact their student loan payment. Fortunately, there are many ways that borrowers can get creative with income reporting come tax season that could impact their student loan payments substantially.
8. Interest subsidies - Even if you are in a situation where you might not qualify for any of these forgiveness programs, there is still an argument for pursuing an IDR plan and aiming to minimize your income reporting due to a great plan called the Revised Pay As You Earn (REPAYE) plan. This IDR plan allows for you to get half off your “unpaid interest”. Since these plans are based off your income and not the size of your loans outstanding, there are many instances that your payment is much lower than even the interest accrual on your loans. This is a bad word in the financial world that we call “negative amortization”.
As a hypothetical example, if you have $300k of loans outstanding that are accruing $1,700/mo in interest, yet your IDR payment is only $300/mo since it is based off a prior lower income, you would have $1,400/mo in “unpaid interest”. This amount would typically be added to your total owed; however, on REPAYE, they cut that number in half. I know you might want to pay aggressively on your loans but let’s not throw $700/mo (in this situation) out the window if we can avoid it! Keep in mind, everyone’s situation will be different and there have also been formal proposals for an updated REPAYE plan that would eliminate unpaid interest altogether but we can’t make any decisions off this until it is finalized an in law.

A number of modern office fluoroscopy units have the added capability of a flat panel receptor for radiography. The flat panel allows standard radiographic views of the foot and ankle. The manufacturers also sell platforms for weight-bearing views. Orthoscan was one of the first manufacturers to offer such units.
I had an office in a medical office building owned by a hospital previously. The ground floor of the building had a radiology company part of the hospital system. My lease stipulated that I could not have an x-ray unit. I obtained an Orthoscan which had the advantages of low radiation, not requiring lead in walls, for example, and other requirements associated with standard x-ray units, the capability of fluoroscopy, and not violating my lease.
Use of a fluoroscopy unit with flat panel receptor for the purpose of static radiographic images is billed as an x-ray, not a fluoroscopic study.
