CA Podiatrist Offers Some Summer Foot Health Tips
California podiatrist Dr. Joan Oloff, who has her own line of upscale fashion-comfort footwear for women, has some tips for bringing your feet up to speed for the big summer reveal. The warm climate inside a shoe can also lead to athlete’s foot. Here, Oloff suggests flossing in between toes with gauze after showering to make sure the area is both clean and dry, eliminating a breeding ground for bacteria.

Dr. Joan Oloff |
Since colder temperatures can lead to dry, cracked skin, bacteria can find its way through these openings. Oloff says moisturizing skin is essential. There are lots of good lotions and creams on the market. When using them, spread lightly on the foot, then cover with a sock to allow for proper absorption.

MI Podiatrist Opens Medical Nail Salon
We don't often pay a lot of attention to our feet -- until they start to hurt. But some, especially those with diabetes, need take extra care of them. For many, a pedicure means pampering, but for others, it's necessary for good health. "The results of not caring for the feet can be catastrophic,” said Dr. Michael David.
|
|
Dr. Michael David |
Dr. David is a podiatrist with Foot and Ankle Specialists of West Michigan. He knows that with diabetics especially, infections can happen quickly and spread rapidly, “A simple corn or a callus in a diabetic can evolve into an open sore which can turn into an infection that can easily get into bone." That's why they opened West Michigan's first medical nail salon.

Tincture of Benzoin works well. Apply and let it dry for a moment until tacky.
Brian Kiel, DPM, Memphis, TN
Mastisol is an adhesive adherent. It comes in a single application vial with an applicator tip. It also comes in bottles. This has been used for some time in the OR for Steristrips, etc.

Dr. Jacobson's remarks were excellent. I applaud his comments and understand the work he put in to collect the data and analyze it to present this valuable information on the comparative costs of many medications. If he has this information available in an easy format, would he be willing to share it?

From: Steven Kravitz, DPM
Directors and officers liability insurance (D and O insurance) is easily available and covers the "Board" in question and its individual members for performing their normal and required duties. Fraud and illegal practices are usually spelled out and, of course, excluded from coverage. It is an unfortunate reality that such coverage is required in today's business environment. There should be a number of agencies providing such coverage in your geographic area and for the type of organization you are working with.
There can be significant differences in costs for similar coverage packages. The Executive Director or a board member should investigate what's available before making a hasty decision as to which agency and company you choose to work with.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1B | |
From: H. David Gottlieb, DPM
I fail to see where this sudden sense of urgency comes from. First, the ruling only applies to members of state licensing Boards. How many podiatrists is this? Second, the referenced ruling is from February, 2015. State licensing Boards are aware of this decision and should be taking appropriate actions to comply with it. As I understand it, as long as the state board and the state professional association are distinct in function and structure, there is no problem. Prior to resigning, board members should check with their board's state attorney for guidance.
This ruling is only of comfort if one believes that state licensing boards exist as an anticompetitive agent as opposed to their true function which is protection of the PUBLIC good. Note the emphasis on public, not professional good. State professional associations are charged with promoting the profession and its members. State professional boards are charged with protection of the public health.
Disclosure: I am on a state licensing board.
H. David Gottlieb, DPM, Baltimore, MD
