KSUCPM Student Wins APMWA Student Writing Competition
Lekha Mutyala, a 3rd year student at the Kent State University Colege (KSUCPM) has been named the winner of the 38th Annual American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) Student Writing Competition. Her paper was entitled, "Advancements in Technology and Innovative Approaches in Diabetic Foot Ulcer Management," She will receive a one thousand dollar ($1,000) honorarium from a special endowment by Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin to the APMA Educational Foundation.

In her paper, Mutyala writes, "Current standard of care of diabetic foot ulcers revolves around debridement, glycemic and infection control, patient education, negative pressure wound therapy, platelet-rich plasma, growth factors, cellular dermal regeneration templates, acellular dermal matrices, repurposed medications, stem cell therapies, allografts, substitutes, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and surgical modalities (Dasari, et al., 2021); however, given the escalating prevalence of diabetes mellitus, there’s a pressing need for advanced care and management strategies for diabetic foot ulcers. Thus, serious consideration should be weighed to embrace innovative approaches."

The conference hosts more than 10,000 attendees from across the world to discuss the latest in dermatological research, patient care, and product innovations.

TUSPM Dermatology Club E-Board AT AAD Conference |
TUSPM’s Dermatology Club participated in AAD’s research and poster session. The poster, entitled “TikTok, Time to Tell the Truth on Onychomycosis” investigated the validity of onychomycosis-related content shared on the social media platform TikTok. With over 1.1 billion users internationally and an increase in younger generations seeking medical information and education online, it is important for the medical community to assess the validity of medical content shared on TikTok.

6. Keep an open mind
Part of the challenge that all of us face is the busyness of our practice and the needs of our patients. When we have the opportunity to off-load parts of that onto a remote patient monitoring tool that gets better outcomes for the patient and then frees us to do things that are helping our patients, then we’re optimizing not just for our own productivity, but for our patients’ benefits. So we should all be open to these things.

Query: Alternative to Quickbooks
I have been using Quickbooks for my office checkbook for several years. I originally purchased the disks for a couple hundred dollars and downloaded it onto my computer. My 11 year old version started causing problems so I contacted Quickbooks for an updated version. They put me in contact with a company that downloaded the 2024 QB version and converted all the files from the old version onto the office computers for over $1,000. Now Quickbooks has contacted me claiming that I need to purchase a 1-year license for this new version for $1,200, or data will possibly be lost.
There are only 2 users in my office (me and my billing person) and we do only basic functions on the program, as payroll is outsourced and we only print about 6-8 checks per month. The new version of QB Pro Plus has a lot of bells and whistles that we will never use. Is there a simple, cheaper checkbook program that others are using that they would recommend and won't cost me over $2,200 for a year's use?
