AT THE COLLEGES - PART 1
Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine Award Recipient Announced

Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University has announced Beth Jarrett, DPM, of Vernon Hills, IL, as the 2016 recipient of the Honor Medallion and Alumnus of the Year awards. Bestowed by Scholl College and its Alumni Association, the honors were announced during the annual Scholl Scholarship Benefit and Networking Reception held April 1 during the Midwest Podiatry Conference, held at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.
Dr. Beth Jarrett

Dr. Jarrett has dedicated her professional life to podiatric medicine, her medical alma mater, students and patients. She earned a doctor of podiatric medicine degree in 1985 from Scholl College, where she has taught for more than 20 years, primarily in the areas of biomechanics and orthopedics. An associate professor, she is also associate dean of clerkship and residency placement and coordinates the Biomechanics and Second Year Orthotic Lab courses. She serves on university committees including admissions, academic rank and promotion, curriculum, and assessment. Dr. Jarrett was twice named among “America’s Most Influential Podiatrists” by Podiatry Management

AT THE COLLEGES - PART 2
Scholl Students Distribute New Shoes and Socks to Children in Need

The day was a little brighter for the students at North Elementary School in Waukegan, IL as they anticipated the arrival of their new shoes and socks. Sole Fit, a Scholl College philanthropic organization, distributes new shoes and socks to children from low income families. This was the second annual shoe distribution event after Katerina Grigoropoulos, a current third year student, founded the organization last year. “We believe in empowering children and teaching them the benefits of proper podiatric care. Having a new pair of fitting shoes affects a child’s developmental health and provides them with a sense of dignity, confidence, and self-esteem to help them focus on their academics rather than their circumstances” states Grigoropoulos.

Katerina Grigoropoulos and Tom Nguyen

Second year student and current Sole Fit President, Tom Nguyen, successfully led this year’s distribution event with the help of other organization members. “Our events really show how much of an impact we can make on a child’s life. We provided one child with a pair of shoes that ended up being one size too small. She was so ecstatic she had a new pair of shoes that she wouldn’t let them go. It wasn’t easy convincing her that I could trade with her for an identical pair that fit. Words can’t begin to describe how happy these kids were to get new shoes and socks,” reported Nguyen. Sole Fit has donated 153 pairs of shoes and 435 pairs of socks thus far and aspires to continue their mission for years to come!

E-HEALTH NEWS
IN Governor Signs Telehealth Bill

While licensure requirements for physicians don’t vary much from state to state, rules governing telehealth historically have been cumbersome. That has changed over the past few years as telehealth gains acceptance. Three states, Alaska, Arkansas, and Texas, require that a provider-patient relationship be established — through a face-to-face encounter — before telehealth visits can take place. In Indiana, telehealth patients must undergo a physical examination before a prescription can be written. That rule, however, is about to change. On March 21, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) signed H.B. 1263, a telehealth bill that will give providers authority to write prescriptions for non-controlled substances through telehealth visits. The law goes into effect July 1, says John Jesser, president of Anthem’s LHO operations.

Jesser says some primary care doctors are concerned that patients, particularly younger ones who don’t have a regular doctor, could turn to telehealth as a replacement for office visits. Blues plans that have launched a telehealth option tout it as a convenient service for members who might not have time for an office visit, or who might need care outside of their doctor’s normal office hours.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: HIV and Qualified Routine Care

Is HIV positive status still a covered criteria for routine footcare in New York? If so, what ICD-10 code would be acceptable? Does the person need to be vascularly compromised?

Stephen Bennett, DPM, NY, NY

Response: I checked your LCD on routine foot care. There is no listed approved coverage for HIV (B20) present.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS)
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM

I believe that Dr. Boudreau may have a great idea! If we continue to want parity, then we should prove that we deserve it. Why don’t we give the same test to our graduates (USMLE step 1, 2, and 3) and see if we are as well educated as we feel we are? It would be well worth any expense incurred by our profession to gain this information. At least, then we will know where we stand in the realm of general medical knowledge.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS FROM PM's CURRENT ISSUE)
From: Annette M. Joyce, DPM

Podiatry Management Magazine recently announced this year's winner of the PM Podiatry Hall of Fame, Lifetime Achievement Award - none other than our own beloved ASFAD board and faculty member  - Bret Ribotsky. There really is no better educator, entertainer, or life coach in practice management than Bret. He has brought organization and focus to our board in the past year by making us seek out only the best in dermatology education, and we are proud to call him one of our own. Bret will be speaking at DERMfoot next week on, "How to Harvest Clinical Pearls in Dermatology and Achieve Great Success". Congrats Bret, and thank you for giving back to our profession and for being a visionary - podiatry's future success is counting on leaders like you.
