Apply Sunscreen to Top and Bottom of Feet: UT Podiatrist
Warmer temperatures spark plans for outdoor activities and vacations, and that means more wear and tear on your feet. But following a few simple tips from a podiatrist might keep you on your toes this summer. "Check your feet every day and that means top and bottom," says Dr. Annemarie Edwards, a podiatrist with Intermountain Healthcare.
|
|
Dr. Annemarie Edwards |
"And, since you are going to be out in the sun, make sure that you put sunscreen on the top of your feet as well as the bottom. You cannot only get a sunburn on the top of your feet but it would be extremely painful on the bottom," says Edwards.

NC Podiatrist Runs For Re-election to City Council
When the next municipal election is held in November, four seats will be open in Gastonia. Incumbents up for re-election will include Mayor John Bridgeman, Councilmen Robert Kellogg, Dave Kirlin, DPM, and Porter McAteer, who were elected out of Wards 1, 2 and 5, respectively. Kirlin, who was first elected in 1999 and is by far currently the longest-tenured city councilman, said he will seek another term. He has served a variety of two- and four-year stints in office, due to the city changing the duration of council terms over the last 20 years. But he is now completing his sixth term and will be seeking his seventh in November.
|
|
Dr. David Kirlin |
Given his experience, there has been speculation that Kirlin might one day run for mayor. As for now, the Gastonia podiatrist said his medical practice is keeping him too busy to be able to contribute the amount of time that would take. Being a councilman allows him to work during the day and attend the regular evening meetings that come with that, he said. Down the road, he suggested that could change. “Who knows what the future brings?” he said.

PA Podiatrist Seeks Seat on Reading School Board
Five years ago Dr. Noahleen Betts started a scholarship pageant to empower girls in Reading. Now she's running for a seat on the Reading School Board in hopes of helping students on a larger scale. A podiatrist at Berks Community Health Center, Betts moved to Reading several years ago with her husband and daughter. She grew up in Sierra Leone but moved to the United States for college and returns to her home country when possible to provide free podiatric care services to people who live there.
|
|
Dr. Noahleen Betts |
Betts said that her passion for giving back to the community arises from her experience growing up in a poor environment. She wants to help children in Reading realize that they can escape the cycle of poverty just like she did, which is why she founded Miss Teen Reading in 2012. "Education really is the great equalizer," she said. "I can tell students I was where they are. I was born and raised in that environment where studying biology, becoming a scientist is just a dream, and I want to show them it's possible."

Query: Non-Aerosol Tape Adherent
Does anyone know of a non-aerosol tape adherent?

Query: MIPS: Registry vs. Claims Made Basis
After listening to a number of webinars, our group practice would like to report via a registry for the former PQRS measures. In past years, we have always done this on a claims made basis. Since our EMR was already set up this way, all providers have been answering the questions in 2017, and sending them on claims as before. Does this action mean we are forced to continue claims made submission for the coming year? If so, I will make sure this doesn’t happen in 2018.
Jane Graebner, DPM, Delaware, OH
Response: My understanding is that you can switch over to registry reporting for 2017 even though your providers have been submitting via claims so far.
I think when the registry reports your quality data that will trump the claims that have been submitted. I also think we are going to be given the opportunity to designate our reporting period and you can choose your reporting period for your Quality category to be during the time you were using the registry.

RE: Kudos for NYCPM Galway Seminar
From: Patricia Lee Walters, DPM
I just returned from a fantastic seminar for wounds and podiatry in Galway Ireland. The lectures were great and the Galway Bay Hotel venue was phenomenal. I think every podiatrist should check this group out for next March's seminar. There were excellent lectures and a cadaver workshop was included. The seminar featured world renowned lecturers. Dr. Susan Rice was amazing in the cadaver lab. Thank you NYCPM.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 | |
From: George Jacobson, DPM
Yes, it is absolutely ridiculous and scandalous. The light should be shined publically on the very examples discussed here. I study the costs and review the generic formularies at Walmart ($4 list), Publix (free list), Target... Indomethacin, terbinafine, meloxicam, naproxen, flucinolone, and cephalexin can be purchased for $4 or less. This is especially advantageous for the uninsured and sometimes less than some co-payments. I also walk by and look at the OTC products at different stores near my office, so I know what is available and the cost.
You can get 25% urea cream (Heel Balm) at Walmart for $4.99 and the same product is $9.99 at Walgreens. Clotrimazole 1% is $1.00 at most "dollar stores" which can cost $10-$15 at most pharmacies. I keep hydrocortisone 1% (also $1) and the clotrimazole 1% in the office and make 100% by charging $2.00. Patients appreciate that I am concerned about their medical expenses. By the way, the Walmart's "Antifungal Liquid" 1oz (30ml) is 25% undecylenic acid and costs $5.99. I have had patients purchase 25% undecylenic acid for $40 from their former podiatrist.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) | |
From: Joseph S. Borreggine, DPM
I recommend that PM News readers pay attention to this recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2015 which makes it easier to sue State Licening Boards regarding anti-trust. If they are on a licensing board, then they should be fully abreast of the legal liabilities that they may face as a board member and heed Dr. Evans' advice and possibly consider resignation from their board if they feel uncomfortable with a possible exposure of anti-trust.
I am not an attorney, so I would consult with one before moving forward in a rash manner. Obtain all the facts before making a decision to resign. I understand that there is Board of Directors Insurance, and usually it can be a part of a State Affiliate Association if you are a board member of that association. As to whether you have that same coverage as a member of the State Licensing Board is another story. Click here to read an anti-trust blog on this topic,
Joseph S. Borreggine, DPM, Charleston, IL
