AT THE COLLEGES

FCNY Will Open On Saturdays

The Foot Center of New York, a critical health resource for the residents of Harlem, will open on Saturdays beginning Saturday, April 16, in addition to its regular Monday–Thursday hours. The Saturday hours, 8am to noon, will give working Harlem residents the opportunity to take advantage of the services offered by this full-service podiatric medical facility associated with the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. Parents will now have the chance to bring their school-age children for check-ups or treatment of problems.

Dr. Eunice Ramsey-Parker

The Foot Center of New York’s podiatrists treat all common foot problems, and all causes of foot pain, as well as foot problems caused by diabetes, including diabetic wound care. “Saturday hours will help us ensure that all residents who have foot pain or other problems can come in without missing work or school. Also, more diabetics will be able to receive the foot care they need to avoid major complications down the road,” said Eunice Ramsey-Parker, DPM, MPH, Clinic Administrator of the Foot Center.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS
IL Podiatrist Denied 2nd Place in St. Louis Marathon by Doped Kenyan Runner

For third place at the 2015 St. Louis half-marathon, Dr. Krista (Arnold) Nelson got $300. It should have been $1,000. She can blame that on the doped runner from Kenya who raced off ahead of the pack. The foot doctor from Edwardsville, Illinois, is among the recreational runners who were cheated out of places and prizes by Lilian Mariita, a second-tier Kenyan athlete who made her living from small U.S. road races, got busted twice for doping, and was the focus of an Associated Press investigation published last week.

Dr. Krista (Arnold) Nelson

The story shows how the sports doping problem has trickled down to the non-elite, amateur level. Suddenly, a practice more usually associated with Olympic champions and Tour de France cyclists is hitting close to home for runners like Nelson. “You don’t have to be elite to be knocked off the podium and out of your deserved place,” she told AP.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
FL Podiatrist Discusses 3 Basic Rules for Runners

There’s no doubt that runners’ feet take a pounding, and this makes them vulnerable to a wide range of ailments, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and even stress fractures. John Coleman, DPM has seen them all. A practicing podiatrist and an avid runner, he frequently volunteers in the medical tent at running races and is well versed in the foot ailments that commonly plague runners who have not taken proper preventive measures. Coleman, who is board-certified in Primary Care in Podiatric Medicine and Foot and Ankle Surgery by the ABMSP, says there are three basic rules for runners to follow that will ensure better foot health for years to come before launching a new spring training program .

Dr. John Coleman

1.) Schedule a complete foot exam, and bring your running shoes along for an inspection as well. “Podiatrists are trained to check wear patterns of running shoes,” Coleman said. “Their background in biomechanics enables them to watch you walk and run and identify issues that can cause or contribute to injuries.”
2.) Find the right footwear. “Your podiatrist will assess the need of custom orthotics,” Coleman said. “A runner should also visit a running specialty store, where trained consultants will evaluate your foot type and shoe needs.”
3.) Listen to your feet. A marathon-induced blister is one thing, Coleman said. But sudden pain, persistent soreness, or even skin changes in your feet can be a sign of an underlying condition that could be caused or aggravated by running regimens. Pay attention to your feet and be sure to examine them frequently for visual signs of problems.

STATE LEGISLATIVE NEWS
NC Lawmakers Table Occupational Licensing Proposal

North Carolina legislators have backed off a proposal to eliminate state licensing requirements for a dozen occupations and consolidate other occupational boards. Members of the Joint Legislative Administrative Procedure Oversight Committee meeting Tuesday shelved draft legislation for the upcoming General Assembly session, which starts April 25.

The decision for inaction came after people associated with the boards or the professions regulated spoke at the committee and urged lawmakers not to move forward. Committee co-chairman Rep. Jonathan Jordan of Ashe County said more information is needed from the boards to ensure that public health and safety are protected. Licensing boards on the chopping block in the bill covered acupuncturists, athletic trainers, and podiatrists among others.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
8 Last-Minute Tax Tips for Physicians - Part 1

"Filing an extension is an excellent move for taxpayers who have a more complicated return than average. Examples include owning your own practice or acting as a principle (e.g., shareholder, member, partner) in a group practice, owning rental property, or having a significant number of securities transactions (i.e., buying and selling stocks and bonds).

The most common reasons (excluding procrastination) for filing an extension are two-fold. First, most taxpayers don’t receive K-1s or brokerage statements in time to meet the April 18 filing deadline. Secondly, your tax preparer, attorney, or CPA can often provide a better result if given an opportunity to think through the many options available to you."

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS)
From: Robert Boudreau, DPM

I dont get it. It seems that there is a segment of our profession that continually harps on the "We've got to get the MD degree" and the "parity" theme, but then I read this and think that the same segment wants to "get it the easiest way possible." No offense, Dr. Wan, but I don't want someone who is just "adequate" when I have a medical problem, and I don't think the general public does either. It should be all or none; quit trying to cut corners.

Robert Boudreau, DPM, Tyler TX

Editor's note: Dr. Boudreau, we hope that you never have to go to an emergency room at a hospital. If so, there's a good chance that you will be treated by a foreign medical doctor.
