With great fanfare, Ross Taubman, DPM was installed as APMA’s new president, by Marc Lenet, DPM, past president of APMA. The oath of office was administered to him by his father and colleague, Jack Taubman, DPM.

Dr. Ross Taubman

In his Inaugural Address, Taubman stressed the importance of completing Vision 2015 to ensure podiatry’s future. “Achieving parity starts and ends with each of us”, he declared. He reminded delegates that the APMA cannot achieve this goal alone. “Political activism is the responsibility of every member of APMA, " said Taubman.

Query: Injectible Cortisone Dosage

I have seen a few untoward reactions from my neuroma and heel spur cortisone injections lately. I may be injecting too much volume into an already tight space or is it "cortisone flare"? What is a typical dose/volume of cortisone and anesthetic. Please be specific, e.g.,. 40 mg methyl prednisolone (Depo Medrol) 1 ml. mixed with 1m.l 0.5% bupivicane.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (CLINICAL)

Symptomatic Treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy (Tip Sullivan, DPM)
From: Steven H. Goldstein, DPM

This is becoming a growing problem around the country as the number of diabetic patients has been steadily growing. I have spent the last 4 years of my practice concentrating on this issue. It is still an extremely difficult problem to treat, let alone resolve.

There are many published articles as to the use of various drugs such as the tri-cyclic antidepressants, the epilepsy drugs such as Depakote and Tegretol, Neurontin, and its newer counterparts Lyricia and Cymbalta. All of these meds have a degree of common side-effects which the patient must be made aware of.

The other approach is to try Vitamin therapy such as B complex vitamins or Mentax or Folgard. These do help some patients and certainly have less potential side effects that the drugs listed in the paragraph above. Next, we can delve into cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation, pain management, electro-stimulation, implanted neurostimulators, just to name a few.

The bottom line is it is so complex an issue that no one treatment works for everyone. I do think it is important to the doctor prescribing any medication to have a complete and through knowledge of how it works and its benefits and associated risks and side effects. With that being said, I defer to the physician who has the expertise in writing for a drug that can benefit the patient, of which I do not use in my practice on a routine basis.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)

RE: Republican or Democrat?
From: Mathew M. John, DPM

I recently received a notice from APMA PAC listing the politicians that APMA PAC has supported. I found it interesting that the majority of politicians were Democrats. In fact our PAC supports Democratic politicians 2:1 based on their record in support of podiatry. I have been a lifelong Republican, but this list had me rethinking my reasons for supporting a particular party.

Any legislation in support of the podiatric profession affects me directly and if it means supporting a Democrat to keep the support moving forward, then I may have to rethink who I vote for. I am a fan of Rush and Hannity but they’re not putting income into my bank account. Has anyone else thought about it this way?
