PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
The Importance of Foot Health Increases as You Age: NY Podiatrist

Over your lifetime, your feet will carry you more than 216 million steps, or more than 100,000 miles. That’s a lot of time spent on your feet and, as you age, it becomes more important than ever to take good care of them. “People unable to move about suffer numerous physical, psychological, and social afflictions as a direct or indirect result of foot dysfunction,” podiatrist Michael J. Trepal, DPM told Healthline. “It is not simply how they look but how they work that matters most.”

Dr. Michael Trepal

Wearing poorly fitting shoes can cause corns, calluses, blisters, ingrown nails, and even sprains and strains. “Corns and calluses are areas of thickened skin resulting from abnormal pressure or rubbing,” Dr. Trepal said. “They are not the problem but rather the result of abnormal foot structure or function.”

MEETING NEWS
WesternU  Holds Women in Podiatric Leadership Panel

The WesternU student chapter of the American Association for Women Podiatrists (AAWP) hosted a panel in honor of Women’s History Month. The online event, held March 31, 2022, featured leaders from the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the California Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA), American College of Podiatric Medicine (ACPM), the Kaiser Bay Area Foot & Ankle Residency Program, and WesternU College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) Dean V. Kathleen Satterfield, DPM.

Women in Podiatric Leadership Panel

The six leaders on the panel echoed concepts of what it takes to be a woman leader that included listening, teamwork, being involved, and mentorship. The event was organized by the WesternU AAWP student chapter and CPM Assistant Professor Rebecca Moellmer, DPM. The mission of AAWP is to be the leading organization cultivating personal and professional development of female podiatric physicians, through education, advocacy, leadership, mentorship, and networking endeavors, said first-year College of Podiatric Medicine student Sabiha Wahab, president of the WesternU student chapter of AAWP.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
4 Mistakes to Avoid When Selling Your Practice

Proper planning can mean thousands of dollars in your pocket. Here are four tips to help you avoid medical practice sale pitfalls, disappointment, and lost money.

Mistake 2: Not finding the right person to assist you

Finding the right transactional consultant to help you with succession planning and to assist you with the sale of your medical practice is crucial to your success. Often physician practice owners go with the first person they meet just to “list their practice” and get the process going. This can cost you time and money in the long run. Within a few months, you may see no results and have to go on the search all over again. Taking time to interview professionals and looking at a realistic outcome of what is expected will get you going in the right direction. Keep in mind too, that no one is more motivated, passionate and knowledgeable about your medical practice than you.

RE: The Passing of Alice Suzanne Jackson Temples Kelly, DPM

Dr. (Alice) Suzanne Jackson Temples Kelly was born July 1, 1926 in New Brighton, PA and passed away Monday, March 14, 2022. Suzanne received her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in 1948 from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Suzanne Kelly

She set up her own practice in New Brighton, PA which she ran successfully for 12 years until she moved to Virginia. She was an active member in the community serving on various boards and organizations. Her involvement was in the areas of her church, education, and medicine.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2

It is sad to learn of the passing of a classmate. Kevan was always one of the nicest people in our class, with great stories of his family. My condolences to his family, patients, and community in this time of sadness.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL0
Query: Diphencyprone for Recalcitrant Warts

I just read an article in a dermatology journal regarding the use of diphencyprone for recalcitrant warts on hands and feet boasting a 88% cure rate. The protocol involves a sensitization application on the forearm followed by a direct application to the largest wart on the hand or foot 2 weeks after sensitization. Follow-up treatment at 2-week intervals typically took up to 6 visits for resolution.

Does anyone have experience with this procedure/protocol and success rate? Can it be used on children? How expensive is the medication? What concentration is most effective with the least side-effects. Where to purchase?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Burton Katzen, DPM, Todd Lamster, DPM

I suggest either a gastroc recession or more likely a peroneus longus lengthening if the ulcer is just under 1st MPJ.

Burton Katzen, DPM, Temple Hills, MD

I have encountered a few of these, and the usual culprits are the sesamoids. Consider excising both of them. You may also consider resecting the plantar condyle of the 1st metatarsal as well, especially if the bone is plantarflexed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
RE: Difficulty for New Podiatrists to Get into Provider Networks
From: Lance Malusky, DPM

When I started in practice in 1974, the local GM plant had Metropolitan for their medical insurance, and they covered EVERYTHING for their privileged union members. Also, the practice I bought already had coverage in other insurances.  In a few years, over-billing from all professions killed the Metropolitan Golden Goose.

A few years later, United HealthCare (UHC) started up in Dayton as "Western Ohio Health Care." When they started to cover podiatry, they capitated most specialties (a set amount of yearly money allocated per specialty), and I was left out as not being "Boarded." That happened just before I managed getting ABPS Board Certified in 1983, and they closed the panel as described in Dr. Name Withheld's letter. I kept applying and calling, as about 40% of my potential patients had "UHC." Panel Closed" was always the reply.

Then one day, several years later, a UHC executive officer came on referral to my practice, stating that she heard from several friends that I was the best DPM in town. When I told her the story, she said I would be on UHC tomorrow, and I was! So, I guess the moral of the story might be: it is who you know, but also, keep plugging it out with the best care you can, offer the best out-of-pocket fee you can provide, and they will find you.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CINICAL)
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM

The discussions in PM News regarding the values of virtual and on-demand education have suggested the many benefits of these methods. Attending meetings also presents many benefits, not the least of which, in my opinion, is a sense of collegiality. As an older podiatrist, I believe that a feeling of podiatry community in podiatry has largely dissipated, is necessary, and requires rekindling. There are other obvious benefits to attending meetings, such as workshops, skills development, interactions with product and service exhibitors, and just plain getting away and the enjoyment of a particular venue.

With that said, however, I strongly believe that, particularly following the last 2 years of pandemic required compromises. Attending meetings fosters a sense of fellowship our profession requires for personal and professional success. Live, streaming, virtual, on-demand, all have benefits of which practitioners should have an option to select. In my opinion, all of these options should be available.
