High Arched Foot Pain Often Develops Over Time: MI Podiatrist
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "Some abnormality in foot shape or function causes no symptoms when the individual is flush with the vitality of youth. But the years take their toll, and that stress is greater to those specific joints in the higher arched foot. These recurrent symptoms, sometimes experienced as a sharp pain, more often as a dull, aching sensation, are a mystery to most healthcare providers; and have led many sufferers to abandon the activity or reduce their fitness level."
|
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"Many structures, such as joints, tendons, or ligaments, can be stressed by abnormal structure or function. And symptoms often develop over time, without an inciting injury. The pain simply appears. But normalizing gait mechanics can relieve the stress to the affected structures, leading to a resolution of the problem. It is a complex phenomenon, how the body moves, but a thorough and detailed study of human structure and function can lead to pain relief, allowing the pursuit of a variety of fitness and sporting activities," says Dr. McLean.

ME Podiatrist Discusses Bunions
According to Jared Wilkinson, DPM, "Bunions can be a potentially debilitating problem of the big toe joint which can cause physical deformity of the foot along with joint changes over time. Basically, it is a deviation of the big toe toward the lesser toes with a prominent bump on the inside part of the foot. That “bump” is complex – it’s a reflection of an unstable joint that makes your bone drift out of alignment. Typically, it is a slow onset or progression that can start as a child. Usually there is a genetic predisposition to bunions."
|
|
Dr. Jared Wilkinson |
"To treat bunions, we usually start with addressing some basics, such as stretching and wearing appropriate supportive footgear with arch supports. Wide toe box supportive shoes can be helpful for some people. Various toe splints spacers can also be used but they do not cure the bunion. Sometimes, anti-inflammatories or pain reducers can be helpful initially," says Dr. Wilkinson.

TN Podiatrist Invents FootJelly for At-Risk Patients
Many times, when health professionals prescribe, suggest, or highly recommend a topical prescription or OTC foot care products to manage serious foot conditions for high or at-risk patients like those with diabetes, poor circulation and lack of sensation or neuropathy, some patients may not be able to physically comply with instructions.
|
|
Dr. Robert Spalding |
"When I became a diabetic with neuropathy suddenly, I had to experience what my patients go through on a daily basis to take care of my feet," shares Robert Spalding, DPM. "I found out through becoming a 68 y/o diabetic that rubbing your own feet with preventative topical medications is an effort that I wanted to make more pleasant, effortless, and something one would look forward to as part of their activities of daily living. This is why I invented FootJelly."

Physicians Received $12 Billion from Drug & Device Makers in Less Than 10 Years
A review of the federal Open Payments database found that the pharmaceutical and medical device industry paid physicians $12.1 billion over nearly a decade. Almost two thirds of eligible physicians — 826,313 doctors — received a payment from a drug or device maker from 2013 to 2022, according to a study published online in JAMA on March 28. Overall, the median payment was $48 per physician.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
6 Steps to Starting an RPM Program
Here are six steps to get you started with a remote patient monitoring program:
5. You may end up working with a partner
Physicians must consider “build or buy,” creating an RM system with technology they are familiar with or joining with a vendor to offer a program, said Emily K. Hurst, DO, national medical director of intensive care remote monitoring for Avel eCare.
Don’t just shop around to see what vendors offer. “Figure out what you need and what you want first and then see if you can match it to (the vendor),” she said. “Because you’re going to get something that’s a lot more customized to what your needs are and you’re not going to be paying for things you don’t need.”

RE: Nail Avulsion Procedure and Guidelines CPT 11730 Local Coverage Reconsideration/ Challenge
From: Ralph Zicherman, DPM, Herman Zicherman, DPM
Nail infections and treatments have been recorded and written about for the past 4,000 years. Nail infections affect about 25 to 35 million patients per year in the United States, and are responsible for considerable complications, ranging from pain, swelling and inflammation, to limitations in ambulation, gangrene, amputation, and death.
The treatment for nail infections has been termed a partial nail avulsion, which up until the early ‘80s simply required the excision and removal of the infected nail segment for Medicare reimbursement. This was a simple effective treatment, with little complication or difficulty, for the temporary correction and treatment of a nail infection. Depending on the extent of...
