GA Podiatrist Appointed to Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission
Governor Brian P. Kemp has announced the appointment of Lance Barry, DPM to the Georgia Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission. Dr. Barry is a retired podiatric surgeon with a distinguished career in medicine, military service, and community leadership. He practiced podiatric medicine from 1992 to 2017, serving patients in Cartersville, Adairsville, and Dallas, Georgia.

Dr. Barry earned his podiatric medical degree at the Dr. William M Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine and completed his podiatric residency at Vencor Hospital, Atlanta. Barry has completed 30 marathons, including the Boston Marathon, and is active in preserving local history and culture through organizations like the Etowah Valley Historical Society and Booth Western Art Museum.

Doing Bunion Exercises Can Slow Down HAV Progression: NJ Podiatrist
Bunion exercises combine stretches and strength-building activities to alleviate pain and promote mobility. More specifically, they “work to enhance the intrinsic strength of the small foot muscles,” explains Robert M. Conenello, DPM, a practicing podiatrist with more than 30 years of experience, and the former president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine.

Working out the muscles in your feet might seem counter-intuitive. After all, many women with bunions avoid exercise to prevent their pain from worsening. But according to Dr. Conenello, targeted toe and foot exercises can make all the difference. They “can even play a preventive role in slowing down bunion progression,” he says. “Research has demonstrated a noticeable reduction in the severity of bunions when individuals adhere to a tailored exercise regimen for their feet.”

A gynecologist and a podiatrist will face off in November's general election for mayor. The two candidates – Democratic Mayor Brad Cohen, MD and Republican Eugene DeMarzo, DPM – are unopposed in their parties' June primary races.

DeMarzo graduated from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. He has maintained his practice of podiatry in Woodbridge since 1989. He also assisted at Instep Podiatry in Highland Park over the years. DeMarzo unsuccessfully ran for council on two different occasions in the early 2000s. In 2012, he ran for mayor, but was defeated by David Stahl.

RE: The Passing of Joseph Vytenis Bakanas, DPM
Dr. Joseph Vytenis Bakanas, 65, born in Chester, PA, passed away on March 28, 2024. Dr. Bakanas served in the Army as a medic. He worked as a surgical technologist for 10 years and a licensed registered nurse for 14 years, where he later supervised in the operating room at Christiana Care.

His dream came true when he was accepted into podiatric medical school and earned his “Doctor of Podiatric Medicine” degree at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. He graduated at the top of his class and continued to practice as a podiatrist for 18 years.

L4396 (Static or dynamic ankle foot orthosis, including soft interface material, adjustable for fit, for positioning, may be used for minimal ambulation, prefabricated item that has been trimmed, bent, molded, assembled, or otherwise customized to fit a specific patient by an individual with expertise) includes the need for "customization" within its description.
Outside of adjusting the straps and making sure that the device fits properly, what else should be documented to satisfy Medicare requirements? This DME device rarely needs to be bent, molded, or assembled for the treatment of plantar fasciitis.

Congratulations to Drs. Tracey Vlahovic and Steve McClain who received the lifetime achievement awards from Podiatry Management Magazine for DPM and MD (non-DPM), respectively. Both these physicians are icons in clinical education. There are many who have commented on these awards, and I just wanted to also extend my congratulations as well. They should appreciate the moment, enjoy it, and deserve it.
I would also like to add the Academy of Physicians in Wound Healing proudly recognizes Steve McClain, MD as a fellow of the APWH and frequent faculty member at our conferences. Well done, bravo, to both of these leaders in medical education. I know we will continue to see more as they continue in their marvelous careers.
