WesternU Student Wins APMWA Student Writing Competition
Elaine Chu, a 3rd year student at the Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine (WesternU) has been named the winner of the 37h Annual American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) Student Writing Competition. Her paper was entitled, "Overcoming Challenges and Promoting Podiatric Medicine: Highlighting the Essential Role of Podiatrists in Healthcare," She will receive a one thousand dollar ($1,000) honorarium from a special endowment by Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin to the APMA Educational Foundation.
|
|
Elaine Chu |
In her paper, Chu writes, "Podiatric medicine is a hidden gem that requires greater attention and support to overcome the challenges concealed within the field. By increasing insurance coverage, emphasizing the importance of podiatry in healthcare, creating personal connections, and promoting education, we can vitalize this amazing field and illuminate the significant impact podiatry makes in the lives of many individuals."

MI Podiatrist Discusses Chronic Pain
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "Chronic pain affects more than 50 million Americans, about 20% of the population, and leads to almost $300 billion in annual healthcare costs. Definitions vary, primarily on how long someone must experience some discomfort before it can be termed ‘chronic.’ Three months is often mentioned, but six is as well, for some persistent pain, that carries on despite treatment."
|
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"Ideally, healing occurs after some injury or surgery…but not always. We don’t really understand all the factors leading some painful problem to become a chronic one, and no longer proceeding through the appropriate stages of repair and recovery. But chronic pain serves no purpose, and its course is unknown. Treating it requires the use of differing approaches, varying therapies, employed congruently. This is a serious issue in modern medicine: we need to develop either better meds, or healthier alternatives to the health crisis that is chronic pain," says Dr. McLean.

Ingrown Toenails Can Result from Not Trimming Them Often Enough: AZ Podiatrist
Lack of flexibility and specific health conditions can be factors why people don't trim their toenails, says Sondema N. Tarr, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist practicing at Direct Podiatry Arizona in Tempe, Arizona. "For some people over time, as they age, being flexible enough to reach your feet becomes challenging," she explains. "Also, certain people have health conditions like a previous stroke, spinal bifida, or rheumatoid arthritis, that changes the shape of your feet and makes it harder to trim your nails.
|
|
Dr. Sondema Tarr |
Sometimes people's nail shape can change over time, and nail trimming which was once painless becomes extremely painful. "If people don't trim their nails often enough, ingrown nails can become a problem," warns Dr. Tarr. "As toenails becomes very long, they tend to curl and will grow into the skin."

CMS to Raise Medicare Advantage Pay Rates by 3.3% in 2024
The Biden administration finalized a proposal to raise Medicare Advantage payments by 3.32% in 2024, slightly above the 1% raise that it proposed. The final payment rule released Friday comes after an intense lobbying campaign from insurers who claimed that the original advance notice released in February would amount to a cut to plans. The agency also finalized changes to the MA risk adjustment model, but will instead phase the changes in over three years as opposed to implementation next year.
Administration officials said that the goal of the rule is to help ensure pay is accurate to plans in the popular program. “Paying Medicare Advantage plans more accurately for the care they provide is how we ensure that people enrolled in Medicare Advantage, especially populations with the highest health disparities and people in underserved communities, can continue to access the care they deserve,” said CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure in a statement.

Student Loan Concepts to Know During Tax Season
With tax season approaching, many people are focused on gathering all the tax forms to make sure they don’t miss the April deadline; however, few will pause to inquire how their tax filing could impact their student loan payment. Fortunately, there are many ways that borrowers can get creative with income reporting come tax season that could impact their student loan payments substantially.
5. Why would you want to lower your payment?
You might be asking yourself why you would want to reduce your payment? Wouldn’t that just mean that I will eventually have to pay more interest over the long haul? Not necessarily! The clients that are looking to lower their payment for strategic reasons fall into two camps: they are either pursuing a forgiveness program or they are looking to take advantage of interest subsidies available.

If you upload your medical notes on Availity, it will be paid within a month (assuming notes are well documented).
Jay Seidel, DPM, Deerfield Beach, FL
We have been having the same trouble. And yes, you can appeal and eventually get paid. But why should we have to? It costs us time and money. It has been mentioned on this forum in the past months before, so it is not new.
We are considering having our Aetna Medicare patients sign an ABN, making them aware of the situation, so we can bill them and the patient can fight. Has anybody tried this approach?
Justin Sussner, DPM, Suffern, NY

From: Arman Kirakosian, DPM
I am a residency director in San Francisco, and I was present at the Certification Summit on March 20th. The ideas generated at the Summit are worthy of strong consideration and I am thrilled that so many podiatrists across the profession are all on the same page regarding what the future of certification should look like. Hopefully, everyone realizes how special our profession is.
Something that has gone under-reported from the Summit was perhaps the most important finding. We reviewed the consensus of about 900 APMA-surveyed DPMs and heard many testimonies of unfairness and hardships from well-trained podiatrists that lead to reduced practice opportunities. It was nearly unanimous that:
1. There is a problem with podiatric board certification, 2. There should be one board in podiatric medicine and surgery, 3. The pathways to certification opportunities should be inclusive of all those left behind, 4. The timeline to achieve this should be accelerated.
Our training has evolved, but not all of our board certification processes have adapted with the change. There is now a single, standardized, 3-year Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency (PMSR). For every ACGME (MD) residency program, there is a single recognized board and a single tier of certification. Additional certifications are available with additional training. This is the future that we should be working toward for podiatry.
Arman Kirakosian, DPM, San Francisco, CA

I cannot speak to the overall efficacy of walking backward. However, many years ago I had a patient named Plennie Wingo who did just that. He walked backward from California to Istanbul or about 8,000 miles. I can relate that he lived a very long life and was in excellent condition. Plennie L. Wingo - Wikipedia
