NYCPM/NYSPMA Hold Foot Screening for NYC City Employees
The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) and the New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) conducted a foot screening for NYC’s Local 983 members many of whom are in jobs that have them on the move all day tending to the New York City parks, highways, traffic patrol, trash collection, and other active jobs. Robert Eckles, DPM, Dean of Clinical Education and Graduate Medical Education at NYCPM and John Brummer, DPM, New York Division of NYSPMA participated. Dr. Brummer opened the session by providing a talk on the importance of foot health and having your feet checked by a podiatrist, especially when your job requires you to be on your feet all day.
|
(L-R) Drs. Bob Eckles, Daniel Yaeger, Faezeh Bakhtiari-Nejad, and John Brummer |
This was followed by the foot screening conducted by a team of 5 podiatrists, two of whom are residents at NYCPM: Daniel Yaeger, DPM and Faezeh Bakhtiari-Nejad, DPM. Innjea Park, DPM also participated. NYCPM and NYSPMA hope to conduct more screenings in the future for municipal employees.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Plantar Fasciitis Can Affect Other Parts of the Body: NJ Podiatrist
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the thick band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes — and it can be quite painful. Most commonly, pain is concentrated in the heel, but according to Alan Bass, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist based in New Jersey and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association, it can be felt in other areas of the body as well.
|
Dr. Alan Bass |
“Tons of patients who suffer from plantar fasciitis disrupt their normal gait to avoid putting pressure on the bottom of the heel,” Dr. Bass said. “This compensation can lead to pain in the ankle, hips, and even knees.” Bass also says people with flat feet or high arches may be most susceptible to plantar fasciitis due to increased pulling of the band along the bottom of the foot.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Partnership Agreements: Why it May be Time for an Overhaul - Part 5
When was the last time you reviewed your partnership agreement? Even if you are not currently contemplating new shareholders or partners, if you haven’t looked at your agreement in the last three or more years, now may be the time. From the perspective of business operations, let’s break out some of the key questions that you should consider in every partnership agreement:
5. Performance-based compensation: More and more often, we see payer contracts that have ‘value- or performance-based’ components attached to compensation. How will these group-based payments be distributed? Are there penalties to individuals that fail to meet targets, which may put substantial sums at risk for the group as a whole?

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: EBM for Orthotics Coverage
I have been working with a local insurance company on getting custom molded orthotics covered as a benefit. They would like me to submit evidence-based research in support of using them for inflammatory conditions as well as preventing breakdown of pre-ulcerative calluses. They have submitted this request to me:
"We request that you send literature that covers all research, not just the literature that promotes a certain stance. We do not consider information such as promotional materials, product dossiers, review articles, and white papers. Since our medical policy is developed around evidence-based medicine, it is best to submit research articles from peer-reviewed, randomized controlled trials."
Has anyone ever successfully argued this position? Any information/insight about what articles are most supportive or demonstrate the effectiveness of custom molded orthotics would be appreciated. I am not trying to re-invent the wheel here and have spent considerable time on Pub Med looking for such articles.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: Using the DPM Degree Outside of Podiatry
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM
My sister went through traditional MD training and my brother is a DVM. Although there is no doubt that our programs are not as thorough in general medicine as MD and DVM programs, they certainly require the same or more dedication and sacrifice to complete. It seems to me that one thing that has happened to us is -- that there is, or was, a disparity in our education process. It seems, at least back in the 1980s, that the quality of one’s podiatric education was determined by the curriculum at the school attended and the residency training experience. All podiatric education was NOT equal. Having been away from the education end of things for many years and judging simply by talking to younger podiatrists, I cannot say that training, especially residency training, has changed all that much. It may be longer, but quantity does not equal quality.
