AT THE COLLEGES
OSU President Keynotes at WesternU CPM Dean's Distinguished Lecture

Michael V. Drake, MD, who assumed Ohio State’s presidency in 2014 after nine years as chancellor at the University of California, Irvine, was the featured speaker at the second annual College of Podiatric Medicine’s Dean’s Distinguished Lecture. Drake, whose medical specialty is ophthalmology, had “Higher Education, Health Care, and the Future of America” as his theme.

(L-R) Drs. Lawrence Harkless and Michael Drake

Higher education and the health sciences share several key traits – including societal good, truth, and honesty – that make them comfortable bedfellows in American culture, the Ohio State University’s president told a WesternU audience on March 30, 2017.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Foot Problems Often Linked to Systemic Disease - NY Podiatrist

When it comes to addressing their overall health and well being, few people put their best foot forward. But, according to Brooklyn, NY–based podiatric surgeon Dr. Allyssa Knowles, not paying attention to one’s feet can have serious consequences. While broken toes, sprained ankles and foot conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, may readily come to mind when many people think of foot-related disorders, Dr. Knowles says that many more serious health conditions can first present themselves in the feet.

Dr. Allyssa Knowles

“A great percentage of the time when patients come to me [suspecting] that they have a foot condition, it turns out to be in relation to some other systemic disease,” Dr. Knowles said. “It happens much more often than you may think.” In fact, Knowles says there is a direct correlation between systemic diseases and podiatric care that is often taken for granted.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
NY Podiatrist Advises Against Running a Race in a New Pair of Shoes

Why It’s Bad: “I see many runners who get close to a race and think ‘I better get a new pair of sneakers!’” says NYC-based sports podiatrist Lori Weisenfeld, DPM. But even if you purchase the exact same model, running in fresh sneakers can give you blisters or shin splints simply because they haven’t been broken in yet. “I tell patients to never opt for new shoes in a competitive or distance situation,” explains Dr. Weisenfeld.

Dr. Lori Weisenfeld

What to Do Instead: Once you find a sneaker brand and model that works well for you, purchase several pairs and alternate usage, advises Dr. Weisenfeld. This means you’ll always have a backup come race day.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Sometimes Even the Best Shoes are Not Enough: NE Podiatrist

“The No. 1 unintentional mistake people make is not wearing a good quality shoe,” says Dr. Charles Halverson, a podiatrist on the medical staff at Fremont Health. A good shoe basically has a stiff mid-sole. That’s where you get your support. When shopping for footwear, twist a shoe from front to back and try to bend it in the middle. The firmer it is, the more supportive the shoe is, he said.

Dr. Charles Halverson

Memory foam shoes have become very popular, but typically have poor support, he noted. Shoes that are too narrow can be tight, which also causes problems. Halverson also noted that even the best shoes may not work for some people. Some people may need more support than the shoe can offer. Different types of orthotics (arch supports) can be custom made or non-custom made.

PODIATRISTS AND ANIMAL RIGHTS
NJ Podiatrist Saves Dogs from Guatemala

Dr. Amannda Richline, a podiatrist, and her husband take mission trips several times a year to minister to people in need. But two years ago, on a trip to Guatemala, a different need crossed this foot doctor's path - a littler hairier than her usual patients, but in just as much pain. Everywhere she turned, hundreds of dogs were dying in a country that doesn't have rules for animal care. In fact, dogs there, she says, are openly abused just for sport. "They have open wounds. They're starving to death, skin and bones," she points to one picture of a dog, who looks very near death.

Dr. Amannda Richline

Suddenly, Amannda's mission grew from two feet, to four. "I just thought, I can't walk past this. It doesn't make sense…that I'm helping people, walking past an animal who's dying," she says. Over the next two years, she was the one who got the training - how to get the dogs from Guatemala to America, the legal steps, the safety requirements, and then the training involved at Cole's K-9 in Bath, PA, to get them socialized for human interaction. Amannda foots the bill for everything. All she asks, is that her dogs get a good home.

MEETING NEWS
DERMfoot Has Record-Breaking Attendance

DERMfoot's renowned faculty, with combined expertise in the fields of infectious diseases, clinical trial research, lasers, onychomycosis, biofilm, and coding, discussed one of the leading public health issues in podiatry today, onychomycosis. Other topics of interest included the latest protocols for terbinafine, drug resistance, and emerging therapies such at VT-1161 and micro-drilling.

(L-R) Drs. Maureen Jennings, Bryan Markinson, Annette Joyce, Jodi Schoenhaus, Warren Joseph, and Harry Goldsmith

This session's moderator, Annette Joyce, DPM stressed that "the key to treatment success is making the right diagnosis." Infectious disease expert, Dr. Warren Joseph responded, "Molecular diagnostics is the future of mycology and bacteriology...but it may still be too soon for prime time." A lively discussion followed at this year's DERMfoot Annual Scientific Conference in Annapolis, Maryland with a record crowd of over 330 attendees who wanted to learn more about lower extremity dermatology.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Bret Ribotsky: What can individual podiatrists do to help podiatric medicine and surgery survive and flourish?

Dr. Barry Block

Barry Block: While belonging to the podiatric associations and supporting APMAPAC are vital steps to podiatry's survival, they are simply not enough. Each and every podiatrist must become an ambassador for our medical specialty. There should be career information in every podiatric office. Additionally, every podiatrist must "recruit" his or her patients to support legislation critical to us. While it is necessary and useful for us to lobby our legislators, it can be seen as self-serving. Enlisting our patients to lobby is a far more effective way to get the attention of legislators.

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday Night at 9 PM (EST). This week's guest is to be announced. You can register for this event by clicking here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: David Secord, DPM

I thought I'd weigh in on the topic raised by Dr. Udell.

Why do life-saving prescription drugs cost so much? Drug companies insist that prices reflect the millions they invest in research and development. In this gripping exposé, Merrill Goozner contends that American taxpayers are in fact footing the bill twice: once by supporting government-funded research and again by paying astronomically high prices for prescription drugs. Goozner demonstrates that almost all the important new drugs of the past quarter-century actually originated from research at taxpayer-funded universities and at the National Institutes of Health. He reports that once the innovative work is over, the pharmaceutical industry often steps in to reap the profit.

Goozner shows how drug innovation is driven by...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Erika Schwartz, DPM

Congratulations to Dr. Denise Beach Davis on the Women in Business Trailblazer Award she has received. I agree with her that podiatry has been "male dominated" for many years and can certainly understand her feeling of having to "prove herself" as a woman in this profession. What I do not understand is her calling our profession "Jewish male dominant". I would be surprised if there were any data to substantiate such a claim.

It reminds me of when I was an extern looking at residency programs and was cautioned by people that the one I desired only "took Jewish men from PCPM". When I began at that program the next year, I found myself to be the only Jewish resident, and the only resident who had attended PCPM/Temple. But there had been two Jewish men who had graduated from the program within the previous five years. It appeared that some found this to be "dominant", but I would caution that it actually made them anti-Semitic.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1B
From: Paul Eisenberg, DPM

Congratulations to Dr. Beach Davis on her award.

I would like to see the study that supports her contention that podiatry was dominated by Jewish men. This remark was inappropriate and reeks of anti-Semitism. This was inflammatory. I await the study reference to which Dr. Beach Davis alludes. If there is no study, an apology is in order from the doctor.
