The CPM Class of 2025 celebrated Match Day on March 21, 2025 at the Mountain Meadows Golf Course in Pomona, California, surrounded by family, friends, faculty, and staff. The class extended a remarkable streak for CPM – the 12th consecutive year of achieving a 100% residency placement rate.

APMA Opposes Rhode Island Nurse Scope Expansion
APMA is working closely with the Rhode Island Podiatric Medical Association (RIPMA) to defeat proposed legislation, H6088, which would permit a nurse to perform routine foot care and other related foot and ankle services in home settings with no podiatric physician supervision. In support of RIPMA, APMA expressed strong opposition to the Rhode Island House Health & Human Services Committee. APMA also organized a grassroots campaign for members, office staff, and patients in Rhode Island to express their strong opposition to unsupervised nurses providing this important and nuanced care.

In a letter to Rep. Susan R. Donovan, Chair, House Health & Human Services, APMA President Brooke A. Bisbee, DPM wrote," Simply put – registered nurses and nurse practitioners do not receive adequate education and training to universally provide this care to these complex and elderly patients. Patients who qualify for covered at-risk foot care are at extraordinary risk for lower extremity pathology, including non-healing wounds, infection, and amputation. In comparison to podiatrists, registered nurses and nurse practitioners, even those with one of the specified designations, lack sufficient breadth and depth of training and expertise to ensure optimal patient outcomes."

According to Robert Weil, DPM, "Physically, with young growing bodies, playing the same sport with the same movements, same muscles used, same stresses to tissues is very challenging. Overuse and repetitive motion injuries to the upper and lower extremities are a real problem. It’s an unfortunate fact that these injuries are a youth sports epidemic. What I call the “Terrible 2s” – too much, too soon, too aggressive, can happen in any new sporting endeavor, but many feel that specializing just multiplies these problems."

"It is important to include off sport and sport-specific functional conditioning that helps to develop the overall athlete and strengthening to prevent repetitive motion injuries. Often, this means a home program. Concentrate on what my long-time colleague and late National Fitness HOF teammate Bob Gajda, a famous sports performance specialist, called 'strengthening the stabilizers and opposites.' These are the muscles and tendons that stabilize, counteract, and control these repetitive motions. Athletic trainers, physical therapists, and personal trainers can help devise and supervise these programs. Proper technique is essential. This kind of functional training is also great for multi-sport athletes," says Dr. Weil.

VA Podiatrist Discusses Regenerative Medicine and the FDA
Ben Pearl, DPM and Scott Martin, MD discussed the principles of regenerative medicine and FDA regulations on Dr. Pearl’s podcast, Fit Foot U. They discussed the use of differentiated mesenchymal stem cells and the role of growth factors in tissue regeneration. They also explored the differences between autologous and allogenic biologics such as placenta and umbilical cord tissue. Here is a clip from the podcast:

Lastly, they discussed the challenges of performing drug studies using human cell and tissue products, and the potential of Wharton's jelly for comparative observational studies. The use of lidocaine was discouraged with allograft tissue. The FDA registration process for tissue banks and the importance of adhering to guidelines to ensure patient safety and maintain regulatory approval were reviewed. The FDA’s evolving role in safety versus overreach in determining clinical decisions was also discussed.

I get that your experience of Landmark was quite different from what participants are experiencing in 2025. The course I am taking is run by a practicing psychiatrist who dedicates many hours from his private practice to work with people under the Landmark banner. Be that as it may, I have heard some of the stories from people who took Landmark training 30 years ago. It was quite rigid in those days, and I don't know if I would have been able to get through it way back then.

With all the recent discussions and postings about horror stories and sequelae from DVT and resultant PE status post lower extremity surgery, what is the standard of care in different areas of the country for pre-heparinizing patients who have an increased risk of PE and the corollary of stopping anticoagulants before surgery and then restarting? Do we leave this up to the internist to clear the patients for surgery, or do most practitioners have their own protocols?
