MS Podiatry Clinic Donates to Kicks for Kids
The Junior Auxiliary of Meridian received a donation this week toward their "Kicks for Kids" project. The Foot Clinic of Meridian and Internal Medicine Clinic donated the money. It will help the JA reach its goal of buying 1,000 shoes that will be given out to kids in the community. Doctors at the foot clinic say they wanted to have a part in helping local kids. "Kicks for Kids really co-mingled with what we do for a living, and we thought it would be a great idea to participate," said Dr. Leigh White, podiatrist at the Foot Clinic of Meridian.

"It started as our provisional project this year, and we have decided to continue that as a part of our Helping Hands project each year," said JA member, Hallie Majure Dyess. The Junior Auxiliary will also host its "Breakfast with a Bunny" at St. Paul's Episcopal Church to raise money for "Kicks for Kids."

IL Podiatrist Donates $250,000 to Community College
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that employment in fields related to healthcare will grow by 18 percent by 2026. There will be more healthcare jobs added in that time than any other occupational group, as measured by the BLS. Dr. Gina Santori, of Lisle, knows the trends and wants to help prepare people to serve in healthcare. She recently made a generous donation of $250,000 to Waubonsee Community College to support the students in the Nursing and Healthcare Programs.
|
Dr. Gina Santori |
"I'm on the advisory board for the Nursing Program so I've seen its quality first hand. I've seen the surgical techs up close. I know they are great," said Santori. Her expertise on the advisory board is critical to the success of the program. The program administrators and faculty members rely on her, and others, to guide the program to ensure the students have the greatest education and training possible.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Areas of Financial Waste to Cut at Your Practice - Part 6
Here are a few ways to reduce financial waste, according to practice management and accounting professionals from across the country:
6. Create Benchmarks
"If your clinic has 10 medical assistants but only two providers, you can compare that to similar clinics to see how far you vary from [the] standards. If a clinic is too highly staffed compared to their peers, it's a problem area and warrants further investigation. But if you are too efficient and have only two medical assistants [and are] understaffed compared to your peers, you need to hire another staff person. Hospitals nationally share staffing data, so they can benchmark with each other, but independent practices don't have that level of sophistication." - Glen Laurence, business consultant for healthcare, Aldrich CPAs + Advisors LLP, Lake Oswego, OR.

Query: Coding matrixectomy and Initial Visit
A new patient presented and the decision was made to do a matrixectomy at this visit. Can I bill both a CPT 99202 and a CPT 11750? If so, what modifier should I use?
Howard Miller, DPM Manteca, CA
Response: Billing both an initial office visit in addition to a matrixectomy at an initial visit is appropriate. After performing an H&P, I suggest that you bill a CPT 99202-25 with CPT 11750-TX (appropriate digital modifier), along with a 59 modifier.

Query: Recommendations for 4-Line Phone System
Can anyone recommend a 4-line phone system? All the systems I’ve researched have too many cons, i.e., no caller ID, etc. I’d prefer a corded system.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (DME) - PART 1A |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
CMS instituted a re-validation fee for DMEPOS providers five or more years ago. Since this re-validation is only for a period of three years, I am curious how you may have re-validated without having to pay the piper when you last re-validated. CMS requires validation payment(s) from certain types of providers, which is why as physicians under Medicare we don't pay. However, the NSC which enrolls suppliers doesn't have a special category entitled "Physician Suppliers". DPMs, MDs, or DOs are considered suppliers and are offered no special exemption. Thus, you must pay the triennial payment.
The NSC will not even initiate the re-validation process until that fee is paid.
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Woodside, NY
