Parents Must be Vigilant About Foot and Ankle-Related Sports Injuries: MI Podiatrist
“Sports play a significant role in the lives of millions of young athletes,” said Dr. Elizabeth Baker, a podiatrist at Reedsburg Area Medical Center and member of the American Podiatric Medical Association. “Parents need to be aware that sports, which require a substantial amount of running, turning, and contact, can translate to injuries. Protecting children’s feet from injuries, and bringing them to a podiatrist when problems occur, can help keep kids in the game and make the sport more enjoyable.”
|
|
Dr. Elizabeth Baker |
“Sports-related foot and ankle injuries are on the rise as more children participate actively in sports,” Baker said. “Parents need to be vigilant to ensure children’s feet remain healthy and safe. And remember—lack of complaint by a child is not a reliable sign that everything is fine. The bones of growing feet are so flexible that they can be twisted and distorted without the child being aware of it.”

MD Podiatrist Receives Women in Business Trailblazer Award
This year’s theme for National Women's History Month, “Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business,"recognizes women’s contributions to the workforce. With the encouragement of her mentor, Dr. Denise Beach Davis chose to consider podiatry.
|
|
Dr. Denise Beach Davis |
“I was happy to [enter] a profession that was Jewish male dominated for so many years. Today, we have many minorities in the profession. I am glad to have considered this career path,” said Beach Davis, explaining that as a woman in podiatry, she had to prove that she added value to most patient circumstances, especially in the operating room.

TX Podiatrist Develops Foot Wipes to Nurture Foot Health and Hygiene
Most podiatrists will agree that you have to take care of your health when you live with diabetes – and for them – taking care of your feet, in order to prevent amputations, is a must! One Valley podiatrist and surgeon, Raul Maldonado, DPM, has taken his advice to his patients to a whole new level by developing, and mass-producing Dr. ROM’s Foot Wipes, which are designed to nurture foot health and hygiene.
|
|
Dr. Raul Maldonado |
He is bringing his message of healthy feet, and his product, to the next Harlingen Medical Center Doc Talk Lecture on Wednesday, April 5 at the hospital. “My goal is to raise awareness about foot health, educate people on how to take care of their feet – when they suffer from diabetes, and to take care of people. That’s why I am a physician and do what I do,” said Dr. Maldonado, a Partner-In-Care to Harlingen Medical Center.

U.S. Physicians are Overwhelmingly Satisfied with Their Career Choices: Survey
The American Medical Association (AMA) released a new survey that explored the experiences, perceptions, and challenges that physicians encounter in this rapidly changing American healthcare environment. The survey involved 1,200 physicians, residents, and medical students who were asked when they realized they would become physicians, who encouraged them down that path, what challenges they face professionally, and whether they are satisfied with their career choice.
Nine out of 10 physicians indicated that they were satisfied with their career choice, despite challenges common to each career stage, according to the survey. Three quarters of medical students, residents, and physicians said that helping people is a top motivator for pursuing their career and 61% of all respondents said they would encourage others to enter the field of medicine.

Query: Place of Service Injection Denial
I injected a patient for her plantar fasciitis during a home visit. She has Blue Cross/Blue Shield. She herself is not homebound, but due to having a number of children, it makes it easier for me to do this at her home. It is admittedly a convenience. I did not bill an office visit, just the plantar fascial injection. It was denied due to place of service. It there any way to appeal this?
Jeffrey B Klein, DPM, Waterford, MI
Response: You can always appeal, Whether you win or not is another question.
You should ask if there is a difference in reimbursement for that injection based upon the site of service. If there is not, then you can argue that the injection was medically necessary, there is no added cost to the carrier and, therefore, it should be paid.

RE: The High Cost of Drugs and Patient Adherence
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
As part of the intense political debate on revamping our nation’s healthcare system, the skyrocketing cost of drugs is also being discussed. Last week on Morning Joe, Senator Sanders railed against the fact that the cost of drugs in the United States is higher than in any other country and prevents poor people and seniors from buying the drugs they need to survive. They also had the CEO of the company that raised the cost of EpiPens to over 600 dollars. Her take was that there are a lot of other "middle men" in the insurance industry who are accountable for that sharp rise and her company only reaped 300 dollars from the EpiPen raise.
In our practice, we are finding that even the cost of generic antifungals are going through the roof and, although this condition is not life-threatening, many of our patients cannot afford to buy topical antifungals to treat bad cases of tinea pedis. What we all know is that if a patient crosses the Canadian border or flies to Europe, they can often buy the same drugs, even brand name drugs, at a fraction of the cost.
Has the cost of drugs used to treat foot conditions affected the way you practice? How do you deal with patients who will not fill their prescriptions because of these costs?
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY
