PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
APMA Study to Measure Benefits of Walking on Overall Health
What if someone told you, you could walk your way to better health That's the premise behind a 48-week pilot walking program conducted by 16 member physicians of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). The study, funded by APMA, examines two groups of nearly 250 overweight patients located across the country. The objective is to determine if a podiatrist's care can make a difference in maintaining a long-term walking routine.
|
Dr. Bryan Caldwell |
"Our walking study helps cement two important concepts," said Dr. Bryan Caldwell, the principal investigating podiatrist in the study and a professor at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. "We have known for years the health benefits of walking, as well as the positive impact a podiatrist's guidance can have on his or her patient's health. We hope the combination of the two will result in a positive outcome for people who struggle with their weight on a daily basis and will ultimately save lives."
"Implementation of a viable walking program under the care of a podiatrist has great potential," said APMA Immediate President Dr. David Schofield. "Podiatrists have a vested interest in their patients' well being, without healthy feet, walking is not an option."

HEALTHCARE AND POLITICS |
Thompson Jumps Into Presidential Race
Former HHS secretary and four-term governor of Wisconsin Tommy Thompson over the weekend said he would join the crowded Republican field for president. Thompson told George Stephanopoulos on This Week that despite low poll numbers and little fundraising, his relentless campaigning in Iowa, which holds the first primary next January, would catapult him near the top of presidential hopefuls. The latest Gallup Poll had Thompson getting only 2% of the GOP vote, even though he said he’s polling much higher in Iowa.
On the topic of healthcare, Thompson, who served as President Bush’s HHS secretary from Feb. 2, 2001, to Jan. 26, 2005, said that he favors pooling uninsured individuals, age 18 to 35, into a national group and then allowing the nation’s insurance companies to bid on them for different coverage options. Thompson said that the bids, as they have in the Medicare Part D drug benefit, would be “acceptable and affordable to those that are uninsured, and it will spread out the risk and will be able to cover every individual." Those who can’t afford it, however, will have to be supplemented through Medicare and Medicaid, he said.
Thompson joins a field of more than a dozen GOP contenders and at least eight Democratic hopefuls.

QUERIES |
Query: Brannock Device
Where is the best place to purchase a Brannock foot-measuring device?
William W Godfrey DPM, Fort Polk, LA
Editor’s comment: You can learn about this useful device by going to www.brannock.com While we can’t recommend where to buy this device, we believe that it should be a part of every podiatric practice. Recent studies by APMA have established that a large number of patients are wearing the wrong size shoes. By training your staff to measure to routinely foot sizes of patients, you will be providing a valuable service.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS |
RE: Flip Flops Responsible For Growing Epidemic of Heel Pain - GA Podiatrist From: Ray McClanahan, DPM It is an ongoing disappointment to me to hear podiatrists telling people that flip flops are bad, and that they are causing foot problems. Even more ridiculous is the directive given by podiatrists to those with heel pain to "never go barefoot." To those of you who are giving these warnings, I ask you to offer a single shred of evidence to prove that your warning is sound and accurate. Outside of our small community of foot experts, are entire cultures who have had flip flops, or nothing, to cover their feet for countless generations To this very day, their endurance exploits and lack of heel pain epidemics, are directly observable reasons to stop uttering unproven warnings. If wearing sturdy shoes and sandals with good "arch support" were effective at preventing/curing heel pain, then how is it that my office is full of heel pain patients who are wearing stiff, supportive shoes/sandals, and are often using other supportive devices, such as foot beds or orthotics? The answer to that question lies in the fact that the current podiatric paradigm suggests that support of the foot arch is accomplished by placing hard materials under the medial longitudinal arch. The rest of the World, and our clinic, support our arches by using the muscles and tendons that cross the arch, and by applying increasing loads to our arches while keeping our feet plantigrade (heel level with forefoot), which is physiologic. Many of my clients wear flip flops and similar types of footwear (Crocs). As long as they progressively allow their body to adapt (arches to strengthen?), they do better than when I used to warn against such footwear, and make lots of orthotics. We should be mobilizing and strengthening our patients’ feet. Current recommendations do the opposite.
Ray McClanahan, DPM, BS Ed, Longview, WA, footdr@nwfootankle.com
