PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
OH Podiatrist Discusses Common Foot Conditions

"As we age, the skin on our feet becomes thinner and is predisposed to deformities such as bunions and hammertoes. It is important that you check your feet on a daily basis, especially if you are diabetic, have compromised circulation, or have loss of sensation in your feet," says Allan Boike, DPM, dean of the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine.

Dr. Allan Boike

"Foot odor is generally caused by a condition called hyperhidrosis or bromhidrosis, a condition in which the feet sweat excessively, generally in an enclosed shoe. Treatment may include appropriate foot hygiene instructions, the use of a topical agent to reduce sweating or, occasionally, medical procedures or medicine to reduce the sweating," says Dr. Boike.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN THE NEWS
MedShape Introduces 10mm DynaNail Ankle Arthrodesis Nail

MedShape has announced a 10mm version of its DynaNail Ankle Arthrodesis Nail. This smaller DynaNail expands the use of the intramedullary (IM) nail to patients with narrow bone anatomies that require smaller fusion devices. DynaNail is an effective alternative to external fixators for performing tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) arthrodesis procedures. Leveraging the shape memory properties of nickel titanium (NiTiNOL), the nail sustains compression across the joint on the level of an external fixator.

Dr. Randall Brower

“Surgeons have a number of product options when considering intramedullary rod fixation for treating complex ankle and rear foot fusions. Of the many products I have utilized for my patients, I have found, without question, that MedShape’s DynaNail system is superior to all other systems,” said Randall Brower, DPM of Desert Canyon Foot & Ankle in Phoenix, AZ.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Partnership Agreements: Why it May be Time for an Overhaul - Part 3

When was the last time you reviewed your partnership agreement? Even if you are not currently contemplating new shareholders or partners, if you haven’t looked at your agreement in the last three or more years, now may be the time. From the perspective of business operations, let’s break out some of the key questions that you should consider in every partnership agreement:

3. Reduction in responsibility: How will you address one partner stepping back from their obligations for reasons such as health or family issues or upcoming retirement? Are there clear terms defined to accommodate that, either in the form of reduced compensation or even the ability to hold onto partnership status?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM

Dr. Baum is correct in that the DPM should receive “equal pay for equal work". The very fact that he raises this point certifies my position: the DPM degree IS NOT viewed as equal to an MD or DO degree. If the DPM degree was regarded as “equal”, this issue as other similar issues would not exist. Legislation to engage equal benefits (e.g.: payment, benefits, inclusion in federally funded plans) is one thing. Suggesting that the didactic and clinical education of a podiatrist is equivalent to that of an MD is another.

The podiatrist is adequately educated for what a podiatrist does. Just as a dentist is trained to render dental services. It is one thing to build houses in the sky. It is another thing to...

Editor's note: Dr. Jacobs' extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

Dr. Jacobs wrote, "I for one am proud of my DPM degree...Excel at what you do." This brought me back over 35 years ago when I was a sophomore at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. At that time and for some reason, we all went out and bought  ophthalmoscopes. The reason given was that if a diabetic patient had microangiopathy in the feet we would see it in the eye. The real reason we were so intrigued with this new "toy" was that it made us feel like internists or MD eye doctors who used these scopes regularly.

I vividly remember Dr. Sy Frank, who was chief of surgery, coming into our room and observing all of us playing around with the eye scopes. He came to the front of the room and said to all of us, "Hey, you guys need to be proud of being podiatrists and not try to imitate internists. You will be trained to do things for patients that MDs could never ever dream of doing for their patients." Dr. Frank was correct and so is Dr. Jacobs. We need to be happy in our own skins. Heavens knows whatever happened to that eye scope. I haven't seen it for over 30 years.
