PODIATRISTS AND RESEARCH |
IL Podiatrist is Principal Investigator in Loyola Plantar Fasciitis Study
Loyola University Medical Center is conducting a clinical trial on two physical therapy regimens to treat plantar fasciitis, which causes stabbing heel pain. The study is titled “A Randomized Trial Comparing Traditional Soft Tissue Mobilization and the Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization for the Treatment of Patients with Plantar Fasciitis.” Principal investigator is Katherine Dux, DPM. Co-investigators are Sarah Dickey, DPM, Gabriela Montes, DPM , and Morgan Grubbe, PT, DPT.
|
(L-R) Drs. Katherine Dux, Sarah Dickey, and Gabriela Montes |
In the Loyola study, participants will be randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. One group will receive therapy treatments that focus on soft tissue mobilization, with massage and techniques that release muscle tightness. This is performed with hand manipulation by a physical therapist. The other group will receive an instrument-assisted therapy called the Graston Technique®. The therapist uses stainless steel instruments to comb over and identify scar tissue.

APMA IN THE NEWS |
APMA Kicks Off "Play it Safe" Campaign
One in four Americans feel unable to exercise due to foot pain, according to a 2014 survey conducted by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). With this in mind, APMA has announced a new campaign for Foot Health Awareness Month called "Play It Safe," which will reach athletes of all ages to educate them about the importance of foot health in sports, and a podiatrist's critical role in helping to treat and prevent foot and ankle injuries.
|
Dr. Phillip Ward |
"The amount of running, turning, and physical contact in sports can often translate to injuries," said APMA President Phillip E. Ward, DPM. "If you or your child experiences a foot or ankle injury while playing sports, early attention is the key to preventing further damage. A delay in treatment can cause toe deformities and other podiatric problems."

APMA COMPONENT NEWS |
CPMA Promotes Walking for Fitness
“Today we’re spending more time at work sitting at a desk and in front of a screen than ever before. We're becoming less active, which can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other diseases. Physical activity doesn't need to be complicated. Something as simple as a daily brisk walk can help you live a healthier life. National Walk to Work Day is a great occasion to begin to get up and move,” says California Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA) President Thomas J. Elardo, DPM, a podiatric physician and surgeon in private practice in Los Gatos, located in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley.
|
Dr. Thomas Elardo |
“Walking is just about the easiest, least expensive way to get and stay physically fit,” says Dr. Elardo. “Foot and ankle injuries should never be neglected. Medical attention should be sought right away from a podiatric physician,” Elardo concluded.

CA Podiatrist and Daughter Participate in Medical Mission in Dominican Republic
J. Scott Rosenthal, DPM, a Los Angeles podiatrist and his daughter Jennifer, a medical student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, recently participated in a medical mission to the Dominican Republic. They were part of "Medical Students in Action" based in Miami, which provides medical care to the underserved villages outside of San Cristobal.
|
Dr. J. Scott Rosenthal and his daughter Jennifer |
"I was the first podiatrist to join their team, and it was a pleasure to add podiatric care to their service. It also provided a valuable teaching opportunity to the medical students." The team is comprised of physicians, dentists, medical students, and Carollton School of the Sacred Heart high school students.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Combination Electro-Analgesia Therapy (CET)
I would appreciate feedback from anyone who uses Combination Electro-Analgesia Therapy (CET) to treat peripheral neuropathy. This procedure combines injections of local anesthetic in the nerves with electrical stimulation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL ) |
From: Jeff Kittay, DPM
Medicare is not the only insurer to recoup money years after the fact. After 20 years of participation with a local insurer here in MA (a subsidiary of Medicaid), I received multiple recoupment notices for office visits from 3-4 years previously. When I protested, as I had already paid taxes on that income, I was advised to file an amended return. I was also advised that "your agreement with us states that we can review records back for years and make recoupment decisions later."
Of course, the original claims with that insurer had to be filed within 60 days, but the insurer could take a leisurely 3-4 years to review them! I, of course, resigned from that insurer, the only one I have ever quit in 36 years of practice. Look carefully at the contracts you sign with any insurer, as they may contain clauses that permit them to take back money virtually at will, and with broad time limits.
Jeff Kittay, DPM, Boston, MA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) |
From: Jeff Kittay, DPM
I thought for a moment that I was reading a headline from the Daily News from 1976, when Medicaid mills in NY, and elsewhere, did a thriving business by having any patient who walked through the front door then be seen by virtually every doctor in the building. Did no one mention to these doctors while they were students that this was illegal and immoral, or are those concepts no longer relevant? Like Yogi Berra said, "it's déjà vu all over again."
