APMA Signs NCAA March Madness Student Recruitment Deal
With the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Basketball Tournament “March Madness” coming to an end, the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) has announced a timely agreement. Patrick DeHeer, DPM, APMA President-Elect, has negotiated a “win-win” deal in which NCAA athletes would be offered seats at any of the eleven colleges of podiatric medicine. Dr. Deheer has advanced training in sports medicine and works closely with the NBA’s Indiana Pacers.

According to DeHeer, potential candidates would still have to meet the basic requirements for podiatric school entry including taking the Medical College Admission Tests (MCATs). “It would not be a “slam dunk” for applicants. We are looking for students with ‘high’ scores,” says Dr. DeHeer, but when full court pressed on the details, he admitted this was a “tall” story.

AAPSM and VA Podiatrist Host 4th Annual Virtual Biomechanics Summit
The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine AAPSM partnered with Ben Pearl, DPM to host the 4th Annual Virtual Biomechanics Summit. Over 40 podiatrists and sports medicine industry leaders attended. The keynote speaker was Patrick DeHeer, DPM, who spoke on equinus in the athlete. He stressed the correlation between equinus in the athlete with plantar fasciitis, medial tibial stress syndrome, and Achilles tendonitis. He also opined that with proper preventative measures, Achilles ruptures like the one the late Kobe Bryant suffered, could have been prevented.

Missy Journot, DPM moderated a shoe panel with Brooks and Altra running shoes. The trend is leaning towards a blend of the best elements in minimalism and maximalism in running shoes. Fat pad atrophy replacement was reviewed, which can happen with running. Finally, Dan Bonono, PhD, Senior Lecturer in Podiatry at La Trobe University in Australia, reviewed some studies that showed no appreciable difference in ankle injuries with high top versus low top basketball sneakers.

269 podiatrists registered and attended the 37th Annual St. Louis Podiatry Seminar. The hybrid meeting was held at the Yacht club at Disney, Orlando. The majority of the lectures were presented by Allen M. Jacobs, DPM. His topics including clinical sciences, practice economics, and medical-legal considerations.

I had a patient who had a moderate bunion but was elderly and widowed with questionable circulation and a history of a P.E. She begged me to do surgery on her bunion and I told her that she had to live with it as it was not so bad, and she was at great risk. She ignored my advice and went to a local foot orthopod. She called me and asked if I would assist. I told her that I would speak to the orthopod first, but if he did the surgery, I would assist.
I called the orthopod and told him my opinion and that he should not do surgery on her, but if he did, he should put her on heparin, etc. When I arrived at the OR to be the assistant, I asked him if he anti-coagulated her. He told me that he thought it was unnecessary. He successfully did the Austin bunionectomy. The next day, she developed a P.E. and died at the hospital. The Ortho told her daughter that she was old and it was her time, and that was the end of that. He avoided discussing what happened and took no direct responsibility for his actions.
