PM NEWS QUICK POLL
Are you in favor of a single unified certifying board for podiatrists?

AT THE COLLEGES - PART 1
WesternU CPM Names Honors Day to Honor Dean Emeritus

WesternU’s College of Podiatric Medicine has named its Honors Day ceremony the Satterfield CPM Honors Day to honor V. Kathleen Satterfield, DPM and the commitment she made to the profession of podiatric medicine and to podiatric medical students.

(L-R) Drs. V. Kathleen Satterfield and Dean Jonathan Labovitz

Dr. Satterfield has been an integral part of the College of Podiatric Medicine from its early days. She has worked at WesternU since September 2010 and provided leadership continuity when she served as CPM dean from May 1, 2019 to Oct. 31, 2022. She now serves as Professor and Dean Emeritus.

AT THE COLLEGES - PART 2
KSUCPM Announces Results of CME Poll

We’ve heard it countless times over the past three years - the term “new normal”. Companies around the world are using it to describe new telecommuting policies, social events are shrinking, and brick and mortar stores are closing in favor of Web markets, all due in-part to the COVID-19 era of recent history. But when it comes to your continuing medical education, are hours spent isolated behind your computer screen the new normal? The Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSUCPM) recently polled podiatric physicians and surgeons nationwide to find out.

Some Key KSUCPM Poll Results

While it may have been the catalyst for change three years ago, it seems that the initial reason for the switch to primarily virtual CME has diminished. Only sixteen percent of the population named COVID-19 as a deciding factor in whether they plan to attend in-person meetings this year. However, under threat of pandemic or not, professionals across all industries have grown fond of the comfort and convenience of lessons behind the screen. According to respondents, less time out of the office and fewer days traveling away from family to meet CME requirements are among the top motivators for continuing to seek out webinars in 2023.

RELEVANT RESEARCH

New Study Reveals that Walking Backwards is Actually Better for Your Feet!

A team of researchers, led by Kevin Kirby, DPM, has conducted a study on the effects of walking backwards on foot health, and had found that it was a highly effective way to prevent common foot problems such as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. According to the study, which appeared in the Journal of Biomechanics, walking backwards shifted the pressure and weight distribution on the feet, reducing the impact on the heel and ball of the foot.

Dr. Kevin Kirby

The study also suggested that walking backwards could improve balance and coordination, leading to better overall foot health. The study sparked a lot of interest among podiatrists and patients alike, with many people eager to try out the new walking technique. Some even posted videos on social media of themselves walking backwards, claiming that they could already feel the benefits. Click here to read the study.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Student Loan Concepts to Know During Tax Season

With tax season approaching, many people are focused on gathering all the tax forms to make sure they don’t miss the April deadline; however, few will pause to inquire how their tax filing could impact their student loan payment. Fortunately, there are many ways that borrowers can get creative with income reporting come tax season that could impact their student loan payments substantially.

3. Income Numbers Used

The other important rule to note is that you can report your most recently reported tax return (if it was within 2yrs) and they will use your Adjusted Gross Income off your return OR you can submit pay stubs for them to identify your gross income. Your Adjusted Gross Income, otherwise known as your AGI, is found on Line 11 of Form 1040.This is the form you complete and send to the IRS when filing your taxes. It is equal to the total income you report that's subject to income taxes—minus pretax deductions, or adjustments that you're eligible to take.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
RE: Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Required Training
From: John Moglia, DPM

By now, those of us registered with the DEA have been contacted regarding the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) required training. The Act requires 8 hrs of training in opioid addiction and proper prescribing to maintain DEA licensure. It does not provide sources of training access either online or at a seminar. Curiously, it lists those required to participate as medical (allopathic and osteopathic) dental, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner. Podiatry is not mentioned.

I presume that despite being left off the list of required participants, podiatrists are required to follow the same guidelines. This rule applies to those renewing their DEA license after June 27, 2023.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

I'm not sure how a single board for certification in podiatry would actually work out. Does that mean that after some unequal training, everybody would be approved by the "American Board of Podiatry", a hypothetical name, to perform whatever procedures he or she felt was within their personal scope of competency? Would that mean that after a weekend course in ankle arthroscopy, a podiatrist could perform arthroscopies at their hospital? A Lis Franc fracture dislocation could technically be called a forefoot surgical problem in some circles. Several of you know how difficult an ORIF of that condition can be and maybe have seen a mal-union of an improperly fixated Lis Franc during your career.

Is the purpose of one certifying board to allow a podiatrist to operate on whatever they felt capable of doing? Or is it to equate the training of a podiatrist who has performed...

Editor's note: Dr. Tomczak's extended-length letter can be read here.
