APMA IN THE NEWS
APMA to Issue New Cryptocurrency and NFT Collection

Cryptocurrencies are becoming accepted worldwide. Bitcoin is now legal tender in El Salvador; Ecuador rolled out its own digital cash; and even Mayor Eric Adams of New York City is accepting paychecks in Bitcoin. Now, James Christina, DPM, Executive Director of the APMA, has announced that the APMA will be issuing its own cryptocurrency called Podicoin. The APMA will be encouraging insurance companies to reimburse podiatrists with this new digital currency. Podicoin can also be used to pay dues to the APMA and its component organizations.

Dr. James Christina and the Podicoin

Podicoin unlike The U.S. Dollar has a fixed supply that is resistant to inflation. In addition to Podicoin, the APMA will also be launching its own NFT project. This exclusive collection of 10,000 “non-fungus tokens” (NFTs) will be generated from various traits of feet. They will be ranked in order of rarity with the rarest NFTs having clear nails and normal arches. The lowest ranked NFTs will have traits such as onychomycosis, verruca, and hallux valgus. The pre-sale will be open to all APMA members before the collection becomes available to the general public.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Crypto Investing Rules for Busy Doctors

Cryptocurrencies can be complicated and as a busy medical professional, you likely don’t have time to research tokens or the nuances of this specific asset class. As you invest into this emerging asset class, how will you know if you've set yourself up to do the right thing? As prices zoom up and down, it feels like you should do something in response to market movements...but what exactly?

4) Invest in yourself while you invest in the market

Learn about what you're investing in along the way. The technology behind crypto is fascinating, and learning about it can be done in small steps. Developing an appreciation for crypto's innovations will give you the conviction to stick with the asset during volatile times.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 3
RE: The Passing of Kevan Kreitman, DPM

Although I am from New Jersey, I got to know and became friends with Kevan and many podiatrists from Michigan over the last decade. To say that I am shocked and saddened by his passing is an understatement. I had just spoken with him last Thursday. Words can’t express how I am feeling since I received the call from a mutual friend in Michigan. Kevan was a warm, friendly, kind, and compassionate person. APMA, the HOD, and podiatry as a whole lost one of the really good ones. My deepest condolences go out to his wife Barbara and his children. Rest in peace my friend.

Alan Bass, DPM

Kevan was my roommate for our 4th year at PCPM and one of my best friends. There was nothing he wouldn’t do to help others. My heart breaks for his wife Barbara and his children Dori, Seth, Josh, and Sarah as well as his parents who all survive him. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM, CPed

I was waiting for some innovative DPM to come up with new terminology that would completely eliminate "Biomechanics" from the podiatry dictionary. Here is the first: Durability.

What we actually need is new terminology for "subtalar joint neutral" and "pronation" (as other professions are accomplishing) in order to evolve biomechanics parallel to how we have evolved foot surgery, wound care, and regenerative medicine.

Dennis Shavelson, DPM, CPed, Tampa, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Dieter Fellner, DPM

Dr. Caringi correctly asks "how do you explain excellent durability without addressing the frontal plane?" Conversely, we may ask how we can explain the many failures, also. The answer is paradoxically quite simple, but in a very complex way: not all first metatarsals demonstrate significant pathological changes in the frontal plane alignment. This is likely a continuum presentation.

A first metatarsal may be plantar-flexed (mobile, semi-rigid, or rigid). There may be significant metatarsus primus adductus. A hallux abductus may dominate the bunion foot. Often there is a combination of both. Weight-bearing influence will largely affect...

Editor's note: Dr. Fellner's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Charles Morelli, DPM

Going forward, even after we start meeting again in-person at our respective seminars, I also feel strongly that these lectures and presentations should not only be streamed, but also saved online and not removed after a given period of time (like they are now). Listening to an interesting lecture in a room of 200 people can be challenging when wanting to retain the information being presented, especially when handouts are never made available to attendees, taking notes is difficult at best, and “some” speakers refuse to share their information. Appreciation to those very few who have agreed to make their lectures public.

Unless there are copyright issues or other legalities that might prevent this from happening, why can’t the NYSPMA start its own YouTube channel (for example), or make it part of their website where these recorded lectures can be kept in perpetuity?

It could also be a member benefit of belonging to the State Association to help with recruitment of new members, but they should be available to all. I made this suggestion to NYSPMA, but they have not gotten back to me.

Charles Morelli, DPM, Mamaroneck, NY
