AT THE COLLEGES
Barry Podiatry Students Participate in Good Friday Outreach

In honor of Good Friday, volunteers are serving up Thanksgiving-style meals to homeless people and hungry families in Hollywood and other cities in South Florida. The Miami Rescue Mission's Broward Outreach Centers host the event each year.

More than 100 people attended Friday's event in Hollywood not only for the food, but also so Barry University podiatry students could examine their feet and provide treatments to their nails, and for calluses and fungus.

APMA NEWS
APMA to Introduce New Crypto Currency

Following the meteoric rise in the popularity and value of such crypto currencies as Bitcoin and Ethereum, the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) has announced plans to introduce its own crypto currency to be called Podicoin. According to James Christina, DPM, APMA’s CEO and Executive Director, the coin is to be modelled after Dentacoin, which is already being used in dentistry.

Dr. James Christina

Podicoin, based on blockchain technology will allow podiatric patients to pay for services with a click of their smartphones. “APMA members will also be able to pay their dues using Podicoin,” says Christina, “so the anticipated rise in the value of Podicoin will benefit both APMA and its members.”  Podicoin’s value will be based on the RVU of CPT Code 11721 (Mycotic Nail Debridement) and will trade on the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE), commonly known as “Footsie.”

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
CA Podiatrist Uses Minimal Incision with Fixation for Bunion Repair

Previously, bunion surgery required a long incision, which resulted in large amounts of pain, swelling, and loss of range of motion. "I have been performing this minimally invasive bunion procedure for 5 year and [have performed] over 300 cases. I have treated athletes, celebrities, and dancers. Most of these patients were offered much more invasive procedures to treat their bunions. This new approach only requires a 5mm incision in three different areas," says Alireza Khosroabadi, DPM.

Dr. Alireza Khosroabadi

“I can perform this surgery via 3 small stab incisions and most of my patients are able to walk the next day with very little pain and swelling. Since the incision is so small, the scar tissue is not an issue and patients normally don’t lose any range of motion which is very important for the dancers," says Dr.  Khosroabadi.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
CA Podiatrist Uses Biomechanics to Improve Fashion Heels

Thinking about adding a new pair of high heels to your spring wardrobe? You might want to consider advice from the medical community before heading out shoe shopping. Dr. Joan Oloff, a podiatrist, has developed a line of high-end heels that incorporate a range of technical comfort features.

Dr. Joan Oloff

“I make my own molds with arch support since the foot sits differently in a heel than in a flat. We combine arch support and metatarsal pads, with the metatarsal pad used as an additional mechanism to off-load the foot. There’s also a canal [created] underneath the ball of the foot filled with shock-absorbing medical grade Poron, so the ball of the foot doesn’t hit the insole board,” says Oloff.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS
UK Podiatry College Holds Foot Health Awareness Event

People were encouraged to find out more about healthy feet at an event with podiatry students of New College Durham. As well as dispelling myths about podiatry, students also raised money for the homeless charity Crisis.

Podiatry students at New Durham College event

Barbara Chambers, head of the Durham school of podiatric medicine, said, “The lecturers and students involved in creating this event want to raise the public’s awareness of the benefits of good foot health and the role podiatrists play in maintaining healthy feet and lower limbs. Members of the public greatly under-estimate the importance and benefits of good foot health.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Areas of Financial Waste to Cut at Your Practice - Part 5

Here are a few ways to reduce financial waste, according to practice management and accounting professionals from across the country:

5. Code Accurately and Ethically

"Make sure you're coding your services at the right level. If you're coding too low, you're not getting maximum reimbursement. I had one client always billing at the highest level, but you don't want to be there either because that would leave you open to an audit. But if you're spending an hour with a patient, and it's taking more time to make a diagnosis, that warrants a higher level of coding. Every now and then, you should do a coding audit to make sure that you're not leaving money on the table. If you're doing something complex, you need to be able to bill for it." - Glen Laurence, business consultant for healthcare, Aldrich CPAs + Advisors LLP, Lake Oswego, OR.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Palmetto Denying Nail and Callus Care Together
From: Troy Harris, DPM

In my experience, Palmetto GBA has paid for toenail and callus care at the same visit until approximately February or March of 2018. On the same patient, with the same billing and coding, they paid for CPT 11056 and CPT 11720 for a January 2018 visit; then for a March 2018 visit for the same patient, same codes and billing, they paid only for the callus and denied the nail code.

I have spoken with or read about two other podiatry practices that are facing a similar problem.  I just wanted to spread the word so hopefully podiatrists served by Palmetto can work together to find a solution. It looks like it may be a computer edit that started when Palmetto took on Cahaba in February.

QUERIES (MEDICARE)
Query: Medicare Re-validation Fee

I just received a notification from Palmetto GBA that I need to do my triennial re-validation. I was shocked and appalled to find out that I have to pay a government agency $569 for re-validation. Is this something new? Am I reading it incorrectly regarding the fee owed?

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Bringing an PA/NP into Practice

My practice is expanding and I'm considering bringing on a part-time midlevel provider (PA/NP) to aid in patient care. I recognize that state laws ultimately dictate legality of employment, but I would love to hear the opinions of my colleagues out there who employ or have employed PAs/NPs in their practices.
