My name is Owen Morris and I will graduate from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in May 2017. Unfortunately, I have not matched, but am seeking a residency program or preceptorship. I am willing to relocate and am eager to put my very best foot forward in this unfortunate situation.

TX Podiatrist (Former APMA President) Inspires Presidential Portraitist
The world first learned that former president George W. Bush had taken up painting in 2013. In the years that followed, other paintings by Bush began to leak out – dogs, cats, a watermelon, a horse, a golf course, and now thanks to his podiatrist and former American Podiatric Medical Association president, Ronald Lepow, DPM…. feet. Works of onychomycotic nails created by Bush have been put on display in an exhibit titled “The Art of the Foot” that spotlights oil-on-board paintings of fungal nails.

Shortly after the exhibition was unveiled last week, Twitter and other social media sites erupted. “I came up with the idea after visiting my podiatrist, Dr. Ronald Lepow, who taught me about the beauty in the complexity of an onychomycotic nail. I believe my exhibit captures the artistic nature of feet that podiatrists see every day, but which often goes unappreciated by others,” said the former president.

Woman Crashes Car into TN Podiatrist's Office
A 75 year old woman was hit after a car crashed into a doctor’s office on American Way in Kingsport. According to a Kingsport Police report, an 89 year old woman was going to a doctor’s appointment Wednesday afternoon when her 2001 Mercury Sable crashed through the office of podiatrist Dr. Paul B. Schodowski.

The woman told the responding officer she did not remember hitting the building. The report says the car was parked in front of the building before it hit the front glass entrance. It then went into the building and hit a 75 year old woman. She was taken to Indian Path Hospital by EMS.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) | |
RE: Ankylosing Spondylitis
Catherine Yack, DPM
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis in which there is long-term inflammation of joints and most commonly the spine. There is an average duration of 10 years from the onset of the disease to diagnosis. As podiatrists, we should be in the forefront for diagnosing AS.
When we see multiple bone spurs (enthesopathy) on foot x-rays and our patient has back pain with AM stiffness, wakes them up at night, >3 month duration which started early (around age 40-45), and has uvelitis (a type of eye inflammation), we should be suspicious of AS. We are in a position to be the first physicians to diagnosis AS instead of there being a 10-year delay in diagnosis.
Catherine Yack, DPM Huntsville, AL

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1A | |
From: Ken Malkin, DPM
As a delegate to the APMA House of Delegates, I actually asked for the straw poll from our delegates. There was no deep thoughtful discussion before the vote, just a number of events that occurred during the meeting making it clear that the 4-4-3 year model of training young podiatrists should lead to a more enhanced scope of practice. My first comment to those 10% who voted against a name change was that they were a bunch of dinosaurs.
One young bright New York delegate, Andy Shapiro, said he was one. Since then, I have heard many more opinions against the name change that I think have merit. On Thursday, APMA sent an email to its members explaining that a long process was planned before anything is POSSIBLY proposed. So stay tuned. Sorry, I was wrong and caught up in the moment.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM QUICK POLLS) | |
From: James R. Christina, DPM
During the emerging issues forum at the APMA House of Delegates meeting earlier this month, Immediate-Past President R. Daniel Davis, DPM, brought to the house a concern he has heard from some young physicians that “podiatrist” is no longer the primary term they use to identify themselves. Dr. Davis asked the delegates for their feedback about this concern, specifically as it relates to APMA’s name and brand. That conversation, while very constructive, has been taken somewhat out of context.
APMA is a 105-year-old organization with a rich history representing the profession. While it is critical that we accurately represent the professional identity of our members, changing our brand is not something we take lightly.
APMA is engaged in a brand audit. We’re collecting quantitative and qualitative data about perceptions of the organization, our products and services, and—yes—our name. We have engaged an outside consultant, McKinley Advisors, to assist us in this process. McKinley Advisors has expertise in organizational branding, specifically for association clients. Their President Jodie Slaughter is working directly with our staff team to assemble and analyze the data we collect and ultimately identify recommendations for enhancing APMA’s brand.
Until we complete that process, which is only appropriate for a national organization considering a change of this magnitude, we have no recommendation to change the name, much less a proposed new name for the organization. APMA looks forward to engaging with and receiving feedback from its membership as we work through this exciting process.
James R. Christina, DPM, Executive Director and CEO, Bethesda, MD
