CA Podiatrist Named by WHO to Head New ICD-1 Retro Committee

WHO announced today that Dr. Harry Goldsmith, a podiatrist from Cerritos, CA has been selected to head a new International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD-1R) Committee to deal with many of the problems which have plagued ICD-9 and the planned, and now delayed introduction of ICD-10? Goldsmith is currently the CEO of Codingline.com, a well-respected coding site.

(L-R) Dr. Harry Goldsmith and Herman Cain

"WHO has decided that instead of complicating billing by adding thousands of new codes, it would be easier to go back to using a modernized version of ICD-1, which most providers actually understood," said Goldsmith. Former presidential candidate Herman Cain, CEO of Coding9.com had submitted his simplified plan, dubbed ICD-9-9-9, which contains only 9 codes. The plan was voted down after Goldsmith pointed out that podiatrists would only be paid 9 dollars, and the codes were only applicable to 9 toes. Cain commented, " I believe that Dr. Goldsmith only proposed his plan so that he could reuse his old lecture slides."

HEALTHCARE NEWS

One-Third of Hospitals Will Close by 2020

According to the American Hospital Association, in 2011 approximately 5,754 registered hospitals existed in the U.S., housing 942,000 hospital beds along with 36,915,331 admissions. More than 1 in 10 Americans were admitted to a hospital last year.

Despite a history of strength and stature in America, the hospital institution is in the midst of massive and disruptive change. Such change will be so transformational that by 2020 one in three hospitals will close or reorganize into an entirely different type of healthcare service provider.

QUERIES (EMR)

Query: Mixing and Matching EMR and Billing Programs

There are a lot of EMR programs out there, and many of them have a billing part tied into them. Is anyone aware if you can mix and match the EMR and billing software? Let's say you want to use Medisoft billing and Traknet EMR or Allscripts EMR. Can you do that?  Are there any rules that govern if EMR companies have to provide you with the bridge so that you can use the billing program you want via the HL-7 interface?

Query: Accessing Digital X-Rays on a Wireless Tablet

Is anybody accessing patients' digital radiographs from their in-office PC computer network on a wireless tablet? Which tablets work best? Any technical problems or hints? What suggestions can you offer for the neophyte?

RE: Recommendations for EMR/EHR (Elliot Udell, DPM)
From: Robert Wunderlich, DPM

I've also been using Practice Fusion, and I mostly agree with Dr. Udell. I think it's just another example of a very good piece of web-based software that is essentially free to use. Some may say, "you get what you pay for," but let's remember that Microsoft, Apple, Google, and Facebook have also given us free software that many of us literally couldn't function without. I did quite a bit of research on various EMR systems, and although some of them have advantages over Practice Fusion, I couldn't justify the added expense to my practice. This is a decision that each of us has to make based on our own practice.

As for the concerns about being able to archive/back-up patient records, it's worth noting that a hard copy of any records generated in Practice Fusion can simply be printed at the time of each office visit, and kept in a traditional paper chart. None of the Meaningful Use measures require us to have a paperless office.

RE: Recommendations for EMR/EHR (Elliot Udell, DPM)
From: Joshua Kaye, DPM

The main reason for the popularity of Practice Fusion is the cost. Compared to many other programs that can easily cost tens of thousands of dollars, it does seem to be a bargain. The two main problems with Practice Fusion software are that it is a cloud-based program and it cannot create a backup in one’s office.

Being cloud-based creates a problem in terms of speed and Internet dependency; however, the inability to create a local backup in one’s office in a complete deal breaker. Like auto insurance, you are very happy to have it when you need it. And also like auto insurance, would you risk your personal and professional economic stability by...

RE: Recommendations for EMR/EHR (Greg Caringi, DPM)
From: Joel Epstein, DPM

Another independent solo practitioner and I evaluated a number of EMR solutions and went with Total Practice Partner by McKesson for both our EMR and medical billing.

Our criteria in choosing an EMR were the following:

1. A strong parent company that would be here in the future. With all the medical record, billing, and regulatory changes coming down the road, we felt it was important to go with a big proven company. McKesson meets this criteria.

2. The company had to have a seamless interface between...

RE: America’s Tallest Man Gets New Shoes Thanks to $32K in Donations
From: Charles Morelli, DPM

I guess I'm really out of touch. $32,000 for a pair of shoes?  Really? I am so embarrassed by this that I really don't know what to say. I am all for capitalism and making money, but to charge this man that kind of money seems a bit excessive. I think Reebok would have, and certainly could have, done this for free and made a lot of money simply by the publicity and goodwill generated. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm now on my way to New Balance for sneakers. I might buy two pair just for spite.
