Flip-Flops Responsible For Growing Epidemic of Heel Pain: GA Podiatrist

Podiatrist Dr. Jana M. Rose of Habersham Podiatry, who is also a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, says wearing flip-flop sandals is responsible for a growing epidemic of heel pain among teens and young adults in particular. The cause of the heel pain is that flip-flops provide no arch support and can "accentuate any abnormal biomechanics in foot motion," Rose says.

Dr. Jana M. Rose

She advises wearing sandals with strong soles and arch support, which she also says are the sturdier, but perhaps less fashionable sandal styles. Because different people have different foot types, Rose says when it comes to advising people on what type of sandal they should or shouldn't wear, it's difficult to generalize.

The key is limited use, she says."Being a woman myself, I understand wanting to dress up, so if you absolutely have to wear heels, limit wearing them for one to two hours," said Rose. "Your feet will tell you when they've had enough and [at that point], you have to throw them off because you're in so much pain."

AT THE COLLEGES
Armstrong Slated to be The First Podiatrist in Space
.
NASA has announced that they have selected David G. Armstrong, DPM, Ph.D to be part of their “researchers in space” program. Armstrong is presently Professor of Surgery, Chair of Research, and Associate Dean of the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University. “Dr. Armstrong has already circled the globe many times promoting diabetes research,” said Leonard N. Spock, NASA’s Administrator, “so we have decided that he would be the ideal candidate for a planned research mission.
.
NASA first became aware of Dr. Armstrong when they received a letter from his famous Uncle, Neil , who was the first man to step foot on the moon. Dr. Armstrong exclaimed “I’m honored and thrilled to have been selected for this prestigious honor. I look forward to this unprecedented opportunity to raise the world’s awareness of an important issue.”
.
Dr. David G. Armstrong
.
Dr. Armstrong will begin his intensive physical training in Houston, Texas this summer under the direction of his cousin, 7-time Tour de France winner Lance. Asked about anything unique that he plans to bring with him on his space mission, Dr. Armstrong noted that he will take a Semmes-Weinstein monofilament and a trumpet left to him by his great uncle Louie Satchmo.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

Toe Reading Not a Substitute For Medical Assessment: Canadian Podiatrist

KC Miller is a toe reader, reflexologist, and founder of the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, a private post-secondary school of holistic medicine, near Phoenix, AZ. Toe reading is based on the theory that the story of a person's life is stored in the cellular memories of the feet. The soles of the feet are a reflection of physical health and the body's organs; the position and shape of the toes say a lot about you, your experiences, emotions and relationships, Miller says.

Dr. Julie Enrico

Podiatrist Dr. Julie Enrico, who like Miller, spends a lot of time talking to people while working with their feet, says she finds the concept of toe reading "interesting," but she has found no similar correlation between toes and a person's emotional well-being in her practice, "although I'm not trained in that." Enrico notes, however, that people with chronic foot pain tend to be depressed because they can't go out and do their normal activities "so it does influence their psyche quite a bit."

The hammertoes she sees are a sign of muscle imbalance, mostly of a genetically inherited nature. Ill-fitting shoes, especially if they're worn at a young age when feet are still developing, can irritate hammertoes and bunions, Enrico says.

Podiatrist Enrico considers herself "open to everything ... but toe reading probably wouldn't be a substitute for medical or psychological assessment, I would say," she concludes.

QUERIES

Query: Database For Foot Sizes?

I have been contacted by the Johns Hopkins Biomedical Engineering Department Design Team that is working to develop an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) for patients with osteoarthritis of the foot and ankle. Is anyone aware of any databases containing information on sizes of feet and ankles of older, diabetic women with osteoarthritis?

RESPONSES / COMMENTS

RE: First 10 Sites for Competitive Bidding Released, But Website is Down!
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

On March 30 the competitive bidding contractor listed the list of the 10 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) where the first phase of the Medicare DMEPOS Competitive Bidding Program will be implemented was posted on-line. When I checked later in the day, the website no longer could be accessed. The American Orthotic and Prosthetics Association recently released similar information on March 30 2007. Why Palmetto and CMS chose to publish then withdraw this website is
unknown.

The list of the 10 MSA's which were listed on the site were:

Jurisdiction A - Pittsburgh, PA

Jurisdiction B - Cincinnati-Middletown, OH-KY-IN, Cleveland-Elyria-Mentor, OH

Jurisdiction C - Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord; NC-SC, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX, Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Miami Beach, FL, Orlando-Kissimmee, FL, San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo, PR

Jurisdiction D - Kansas City, MO-KS, Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, CA

When (or if) this list will be back on line is unknown. Also unknown and yet undecided are what off-the-shelf products will be included in this program. Whether DPM's will be considered in the same category as MD's and DO's, who only are required to bid on their own patients, also is still not clear. Stay tuned!
