WesternU Holds Virtual Match Day Celebration
Match Day was supposed to have been a very different kind of day. “We had the champagne, the glasses, and the confetti - ready to celebrate with the students and their families as they opened the envelopes revealing their future,” said V. Kathleen Satterfield, DPM, Dean of Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine (WesternU CPM).

Dr. V. Kathleen Satterfield |
Coronavirus made sure that did not happen, but CPM was not to be daunted. Kyung Brown, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Angela Russell-Westlake, Events Manager, turned a traditional event into a virtual celebration within days. On March 20, 2020, fourth year students and their family members gathered in their homes as the faculty and staff cheered them on via the digital platform, Zoom. For the 7th year in a row, WesternU CPM students had a 100% placement rate.

CMS Granting Exceptions from Medicare Quality Reporting Programs
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced unprecedented relief for the clinicians, providers, and facilities participating in Medicare quality reporting programs including the 1.2 million clinicians in the Quality Payment Program and on the front lines of America’s fight against the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Specifically, CMS announced it is granting exceptions from reporting requirements and extensions for clinicians and providers participating in Medicare quality reporting programs with respect to upcoming measure reporting and data submission for those programs. The action comes as part of the Trump Administration’s response to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Steps to Follow if Closures or Layoffs Become Necessary Due to COVID-19 - Part 1
The following are the steps that should be followed by practices at this time as closures and layoffs become necessary:
-
Review your practice contracts and policies so you are familiar with scheduling and compensation obligations. Figure out which employees have contracts and which do not and how those contracts might differ.
-
Consider whether you should close the practice and whether this will be temporary or permanent. If you continue operations, can you lay off employees or cut hours and what will be required to do that? Establish a timeline for when these decisions will need to be made? This is critical if you need to terminate employees without cause and continue to pay them during the notice period.
-
Work with your employees to determine flexibility. You may be surprised to find some are willing to give up compensation as long as they have benefits, others will take lower pay or fewer hours to help the practice survive.
-
Many states will provide special unemployment options for workers who have been laid off or suffered a reduction in hours due to the pandemic. Make sure you and your employees understand the support that is available in your state. Even an employee who suffers a reduction in hours may be eligible for a partial benefit.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEETING NEWS) |
RE: DERMfoot Rescheduled for October 1-4, 2020
From: Joel Morse. DPM and Annette Joyce, DPM
These are exceedingly challenging times for us all. Our country’s response to the difficulties presented by COVID-19 has been incredible and unprecedented. While these actions will help to flatten the pathogen’s dissemination curve, the associated sacrifices will persist, for our professional lives, our families, and even educational initiatives such as DERMfoot.
While CME is the primary reason why we attend meetings and seminars, seeing, talking to, and learning from one another during these events is extremely valuable for the improvement of our professional practices. In addition, it’s simply refreshing to mix with our professional peers. While online CME can fill a specific need, it’s never as satisfying as face-to-face learning/communication.
To accommodate DERMfoot’s attendees, and based on the feedback from the overwhelming majority of the registrant physicians for DERMfoot 2020, we have rescheduled this year’s annual meeting to October 1-4, 2020 at the Sheraton Tysons VA. We will also offer simultaneous live streaming for those who are unable to attend in person. For those have already registered for the originally scheduled event (April 16-19, 2020), the registration will be automatically transferred to the October 1-4, 2020 event in addition to any hotel reservations. We believe DERMfoot will emerge stronger than ever before!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC) - PART 1 |
From: Patrick DeHeer, DPM, William Long, DPM
As always, APMA has been advocating for podiatrists. Our Legislative Advocacy team has been in constant communication with House and Senate offices over the past two weeks advocating for podiatrists as Congress works to pass relief legislation. Of particular concern are provisions to provide financial relief to providers who have been impacted by COVID-19; incentives to rehire providers laid off as a result of COVID-19; and the fallout of recommendations to cancel elective procedures and care (inadequate case volume, lost revenue, etc.).
Specifically, we are working to expand coverage stipulated as part of relief legislation to include up to 90% of practice losses due to closures and other loss of business as a result of COVID-19. If you have specific questions about APMA advocacy efforts around COVID-19, please contact ask@apma.org. You can find more information about relief at apma.org/covid19sba.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (DME) |
RE: NSC Site Inspections Suspended
From Paul Kesselman, DPM
From the NSC: All new site inspections are currently suspended due to the current coronavirus outbreak. Also, the RAC is suspending all new audits as of March 18. Those which are automated (or ongoing ones prior to March 18) can simply be extended by calling the number on the paperwork request you get (assuming you can get to your office) so long as you call prior to the requested reply date. They will automatically grant a 30-day extension. Likely it will be extended longer.
Reminder: Please ask your enrollment specialist NOT to check off hours. As physicians under Medicare, podiatrists are exempt from: the hourly requirement, facility accreditation, and from the requirement of posting hours. Be sure your enrollment specialist understands those nuances very well and that under section 2B to list your hours as “By Appointment Only”. Do not list any hours anywhere. Your signage outside should also list “By Appointment Only”.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE) |
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
I believe Dr. Lehrman may be incorrect regarding telemedicine coding. The need for video (visual) capability has been waived during the current COVID-19 pandemic. A telephone interview and documentation is all that is currently required.
