DUAL DEGREED PODIATRISTS - PART 1
IL Podiatrist/Osteopath Now a Hematologist-Oncologist

When she was young, Kristen Wendell, DO, DPM was interested in becoming an orthopedic surgeon. But she also wanted to be a mother one day, so she thought becoming a podiatrist would allow her to work as a surgeon in sports medicine but also have a little more flexibility. In podiatry school, she noticed that she was more interested in the patients’ other non-surgical issues. She then decided to pursue medical school, and specifically became interested in oncology and DO schools. Eventually, Dr. Wendell attended Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Kristen Wendell

Today, Dr. Wendell is a hematologist and oncologist in Niles, Illinois, working in a community practice. Dr. Wendell is a board-certified hematologist and oncologist; she is the recipient of the James R. & Helen D. Russell Research Grant and has presented her research on breast cancer and survivorship at several national conferences.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
6 Steps to Starting an RPM Program

Here are six steps to get you started with a remote patient monitoring program:

1. Know your audience

Step 1 is knowing your audience. Patients in affluent areas may gladly buy their own health monitoring devices such as blood pressure cuffs, glucose monitors, or smart scales. Those in poor or underserved areas may not have broadband Internet access, much less money for devices. That is not just a rural problem; underserved areas of cities may lack connectivity.

QUERIES (INSURANCE ISSUES)
Query: Change Healthcare Cybersecurity Breach

Many podiatrists, including me, are experiencing the inability to send commercial claims since February 21st and are a suffering the consequences of no revenue stream, possible timely filing issues, etc. This is a national issue and I, like many of us, have not sent paper claims to the major commercial carriers for years, as electronic submissions were fast, efficient, and easily traceable. As well, many need the updated addresses to send paper claims to Emblem, United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna, 1199, etc.

Are there billing companies that could take billing information from an EHR and send the billing direct to the commercial carrier’s portal or perhaps convert electronic files into paper and send them out? Is there any game plan from podiatry going forward to address this issue?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 1A
RE: Podiatrists and the USMLE
From: John Chisholm, DPM

I am one of those podiatrists who believe that after some curriculum changes, recent podiatric medical school graduates could pass the USMLE 1 & 2. I do not believe anyone would “bring it to its knees”.

The point that is being missed is that U.S. medical students spend months being prepped to take the exam. Pass/fail is a function of not only the education but the thoroughness of the prep. I believe that with sufficient prep, some (not all) of our graduates would pass.

And that’s not just my opinion. Some years ago, students at the two California schools took a standardized practice test that most medical students take. With no prep at one school and minimal prep at the other, several received a passing score.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 1B
RE: Podiatrists and the USMLE
From: Jay Wenig, DPM

Passing the USMLE does not by itself mean a provider can or should be FULLY qualified to practice any and all aspects of medicine.

I spent the first 23 years of practice in the Air Force and I saw what happened when medical providers were forced to practice out of their area of expertise. When I first went in the military, all of the medical doctors were forced to work in the emergency room as the medical officer of the day (MOD) on a rotating basis regardless of their specialty. This no longer...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 2
RE: The MD Accreditation Process
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

The accreditation process for podiatry schools is a rigorous endeavor. Make no mistake, the maintenance of accreditation, an ongoing process, is no walk in the park either. You will notice that over the years, there has been public debate about transitioning to an MD degree. Podiatry Management featured a roundtable discussion some years back that allowed the deans of each school, six or maybe seven at the time, to weigh in on the discussion and explain their viewpoints. Subsequent to that roundtable, no movement was made toward making our schools MD granting institutions. There has been speculation regarding why nothing changes, although the roundtable was provoked by a groundswell of podiatrists clamoring for an MD degree.

The first reason is that our curriculum is not rigorous enough and would need to be upgraded completely. Partially true. At the time podiatry schools taught to the cellular level. Today, we are approaching the molecular level where MD schools...

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
High School Toe Licking Fundraiser Investigated

A controversial video went viral recently depicting students at an Oklahoma high school licking peanut butter off the toes of other students as part of a fundraising event.

This fundraiser sucks!

The video has sparked backlash toward the non-profit benefitting from the fundraiser - OKC coffee shops that employ people with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities - though the organization was not involved with the event's conception or execution.
